Preparing for Alpha now!

Posted by Snowcastle Games (Creator)

Greetings awesome backers! It’s time for our monthly progression update.

In this update:

  • Progression report
  • Alpha/Beta schedule
  • Launch schedule

1. Progression report

With more people on the team, we have had to convert our meeting room into a workspace. We still need to have production meetings from time to time, but that is now done in the cafe on the first floor. The team has been working two of four weekends this last month. Morale and motivation is solid.

Since May we have been producing the game content in chronological order. This month we are somewhat delayed according to our schedule. At the same time, we have completed all the monsters and characters for the game so for that we are a little ahead of schedule on that part of the production. This makes it a bit hard to evaluate if we are in fact behind schedule or not.

Gameplay mechanics nearing completion: Thomas is completing the work on combat abilities, skills and monster balancing this week. This is a big milestone since this is the core gameplay that is being completed. This also means that we can begin to properly test and balance the gameplay - especially the combat.

We still have work to do to complete all the visual assets that is needed to fill all the scenes with beautiful artwork, but this is stuff we can add and polish while the mechanics of the game is being tested.

 Xbox One

We now have the game running on Xbox One. It seems to run fine for the most part, but there are quirks that we need to iron out.

2. Alpha/Beta schedule (Steam distribution)

With the core gameplay completed we can finally begin to do some testing! So next week will be used to prepare for alpha testing. We have begun the work on getting the game up and running through Steam. This seems to be the easiest solution for distribution for now.

Once we are ready, we will contact our Alpha tier backers (or above) and invite them to some play testing.

Even though we might be able to do some beta testing through one or more of the consoles, it looks like we won’t have capacity to maintain beta builds on all four planned platforms for now.

3. Launch schedule

This is still the same as mentioned in the previous update: We plan to submit the game for certification at the end of November. Launch is planned in the ideal launch window which is February to April 2016.

That's it for now!
Best regards,
Snowcastle Team

So excited, the progression sounds like it's going well, I knew of problems when going multi-platform, but never never considered the size of the market coming in play.

Keep up the great work, can't wait to try the game once in Alpha.

Judging by the quality of some of the stuff which gets onto Steam these days, I would have thought that the Steam certification process is along the lines of "Click here to upload build".

I find myself continually impressed by your progress, guys! Everything looks great!

@Jon: Yes, that was somewhat confusing. Basically those who are supposed to get the alpha according to the Kickstarter campaign will get the invite.

@Heather: I have been a bit vague with this as we have not made an official choice of what platform we will start with. That said, my logic currently goes like this:

      1. We can expect a 1:10 ratio of piracy once we launch on PC and Mac, so let's do the Consoles first or at least at the same time as Steam.
      2. Our team can't handle more than one release at a time (per month) so we should choose one of the 3 consoles first. (We might, but I am not counting on it)
      3. It seems to be easy to make the game run on PS4 and XboxOne. Less so on WiiU. (for us)
      4. Xbox One and WiiU are the smallest markets of the 3 consoles. We should at least get experience from publishing one of them before launching on PS4.

There are many more matters that I need to take into account as well. So I'll need some more time before I can announce the launch order. Hope you understand. :-)

So, originally the releases for the consoles was going to be after the Steam release. This update makes it sound like they will be submitted for certification at the same time. Will they be released at the same time now? I assume the certification process is different for the various console so there would be a bit of a time difference, but maybe not as big of a difference as the original difference in console vs Steam release?

I'm a little bit confused about alpha invites
Are everybody that have backed basic alpha (35$) and above getting invites?
Or everybody that have backed alpha dog (80$) and above?

Thanks for the update! Can't wait to see more!

@Stabbey: I would love to say: "taking a vacation". But, we will have to go through separate submission processes for each platform: Xbox One, PS4, WiiU and Steam (PC/Mac/Linux)

Each is a big job and might take months going back and forth with the platform owner. So I have a strong feeling that we will be working harder than ever come November. :-)

    12. Stabbey on

Question: If you're going to have the game certified in November, does that mean that the game will be complete in November? (As in, shouldn't the certification process be done on a completed game)?

If so, then what will you be doing between November and February?

      Nice Update. :)

      Yeah! Go guys :D
