A community inspired dance collaboration, If I Were You is a long-term project that enlists the personal experiences and voices of Marin residents to illuminate how dance can connect us to our shared humanity. Through a series of free community outreach workshops, IOCB will gather hundreds of written reflections about what dancing connects us to. These written reflections will then be used to craft a large-scale set design that encompasses our performance space. If I Were You will stand testament to the belief that dance exposes what is most personal to us, and perhaps most universal.
Extensive community outreach plays a critical role in the creative process fueling If I Were You. Each workshop is tailored to the specific needs of the participants and the organization, and culminates with a live performance by Inside Out dancers. The goal of these workshops is to bring the healing and transformative power of dance to new audiences, thereby increasing dance’s visibility and accessibility across the county. By sharing dance with Marin residents from all walks of life (particularly the underserved, elderly, and disabled populations), IOCB envisions the creation and performance of a work that nurtures a sense of our shared humanity and that honors the full totality of human experience – from love and loss, to sickness and health.

Risks and challenges
IOCB still has a lot of work to do! We still have several community outreach workshops to hold in Marin County, which involves a lot of research, networking, and planning. It is possible that we will encounter challenges in not being able to hold as many workshops as we envision, due to the willingness of local organizations to participate.
We may also encounter challenges around rehearsal schedules throughout the Fall and Winter. IOCB is comprised of freelance professional dancers as well as a handful of current college dance students. We will be rehearsing August 12-23, 2013, for an intensive two week rehearsal period, and hope to engage in another two week rehearsal intensive in late January 2014 to work with material gathered in future outreach workshops. If we do not have adequate funding to cover our artist fees for another rehearsal intensive, we will have to get creative about how to rehearse the final production.
IOCB is deeply committed to premiering If I Were You in its fullest expression. We have faith in our team to express high level creative problem solving skills to overcome whatever challenges lay ahead.
Stay tuned for updates about our rehearsal process in the coming weeks!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
