The open source hardware platform Arduino has been the central platform of my electronics class since the beginning of 2008 and I’ve learned a lot in that time. I use the Arduino to teach some basic programming and introductory electronics concepts. This course led me to create a website (http://electronics.flosscience.com/) to help support my students as well as others who might want to use this platform in education. Now I’m ready for the next step.

I want to create a text book for a one semester high school level course. The text will be centered around a guided inquiry approach to learning. As such there will need to be a supporting teacher’s edition to aid educators who may just be staring with micro-controllers or with modern programming all together. What I want to write is the book I wish I had three years ago when I started this.

At the time, I knew electronics but I knew almost no programming. Every group of students I've had since then has helped me shape the way the course is taught. We've learned together by tackling problems that did not have only one answer. Most books that I’ve seen that teach electronics and micro-controllers at the high school level are little more than “cook books”. They simply consist of a list of instructions to follow that lead to little real understanding or learning. I want to create a resource to help educators avoid that trap.

What I propose to do is to write a student edition that will be around 200 “Digest” sized pages in length. The book will have explanations, code examples, reference material, and will pose novel questions to be answered and/or tasks to be completed. There will be an accompanying teacher’s wrap-around edition printed at 8.5”x11” with solutions to problems posed as well as teaching hints gleaned from having taught the course over half a dozen times. My course http://electronics.flosscience.com/ will serve as a rough draft of the table of contents and portions of a really rough draft of some chapters.

The final product will be available in both print and DRM free electronic editions. My plan is to set the price for each ebook at $10 and print editions at $20. My accompanying web-page complete with instructional videos will remain available and will be updated throughout the writing process. This project will also give me the impetus to spend a bit more time on my videos to ensure they are more polished for public consumption.
