Plume is a location-based platform focused on expanding discovery and creating new experiences locally. Unsatisfied with the current social media landscape, we created Plume to enhance people’s experience in the real world - an app that doesn’t rely on keeping you mindlessly scrolling for hours only to come away feeling bad about yourself and wondering how you compare to your peers. Plume is first and foremost a community project and a company that prioritizes its user experience above all else. We want people to feel good about engaging in their community.
We are committed to creating a platform that has a positive impact on people and helps us re-engage with our communities. To show our commitment to our community and supporters, we have released the Beta for Plume, available now in the App Store for iOS.
Two years ago I took a trip to Bali to meet up with my girlfriend who was traveling for work. It was my first time traveling internationally. The trip lasted two weeks and resulted in tons of pictures and videos to remember our journey. I posted across multiple platforms, quite satisfied with the number of likes I’d received. That was until I noticed a comment saying “Did you meet anyone?”. Not only did I not meet anyone, but I realized that I’d barely even communicated with anyone the entire trip. Every post, text, or picture went straight to someone back home.
That night I realized something. Even though I had traveled across the world, I was still only interacting with the small bubble of people that I already knew. While in theory social media gives you the ability to connect with almost anyone in the world, it often works to inhibit you from making connections with the people around you.
I had reached a point where my social media was actually hindering me from being social. Though I had lots of friends and followers, I often found myself making posts for validation, to accumulate likes and comments, not to be an engaging member of my community. In an attempt to rekindle my social flame, I deleted all of my social media profiles and made an honest effort to become more social and discover authentic experiences locally.
I used event sites and group events to meet new people, but after years of living in Seattle, I realized that I was still felt no attachment to my local community. This is when me and my friends came up with the idea for Plume.
Plume is specifically designed to be a catalyst for discovering local experiences.
Our top priority is making sure we deliver the best app possible to our users, with the necessary support to help people make the most of their experience. Our immediate goals are to maintain our sleek design and take care of any bug fixes that come up as we grow our community. User support and adjusting the app based on feedback from users is crucial to our vision for Plume.
Though most social media platforms allow you to follow anyone in the world, none of them are specifically catered toward finding people locally. Existing social media has created a very narrow sharing experience.
Unlike other apps, Plume focuses on community development and sharing experiences with your local community. When you travel to a different location, you will be able to see what people are doing in that area. Instead of only being connected to the people you follow, Plume gives you the opportunity to connect to entire communities by constantly adjusting your map to the location you're in.
Discovering new people and places will be easier than ever before because you are able to participate in the community you are in. When you look at your map you will see what is happening in real time all around you. Plume gives people the ability to stay up to date on events and to get involved in activities that they otherwise might have never heard of. Plume lets you maximize your experience in the real world.
We have big plans for future updates to the app! If we are able to surpass our initial goals, we will be able to add more exciting new features for everyone to enjoy. Our first goal is set at the bare minimum required for us to continue updates and release the full version of the app. While we plan to integrate all of these features in the future, reaching these stretch goals will help us bring them to realization, much sooner! Some future design features include:
Voice Command Text/Call
Personalization for Map and Profile
Advanced Settings, Ability to Share Accolades on Profile
Safety Designs (hide home, post delay)
Business Profiles (distinguished from personal profiles)
More Filters/ Photo Editing Options
In - App Payment Options
Scan QR Code Technology
Meet People Feature- Random Chat Match, Refined Search Options (places, events etc.)
Game-ification - flame point for posting in locations and being active, contributes to overall score for hotlist, visible to yourself on profile
Refined algorithm for highlighting posts with more likes
We purposely did not arrange these in any order, as we will add these featured in order of demand and needs. Please drop a comment, or shoot us an email about which features you'd like to see implemented first. Also if you think of something that could benefit the community that isn't here, we’d also like to hear from you!
We truly appreciate all feedback we receive - we’d love to hear how our app can be improved. Leave a comment below, DM us on twitter, or send us an email with your thoughts about what you’d like to see in Plume!
Love this project, but can’t afford to donate? That’s ok! There are tons of ways you can help contribute to this project that don’t cost a cent! You can share our project on any of your favorite social media profiles, follow us on Twitter, or simply tell your friends about what we're doing. Every person who knows about this project helps us inch closer to our goals. Don’t underestimate your impact!
Risks and challenges
Change is Hard:
As with any social platform, Plume especially, the user base will determine which direction we need to progress our technology in. We strive to provide an environment where user feedback takes precedence among our decision making process. Because of this, there is the chance that the progression of Plume in 2-3 years from now could be vastly different from what our current vision is for the project.
It's very difficult, but it's something that we have all agreed is the best approach moving forward. It's a responsibility that we all will share with our community in order to maintain and positively grow this unique social experience. Our number one goal is to make something that people love. We will continue to pursue this goal no matter what the outcomes are!
We want nothing more than to see Plume become a integral part of everyone's social life. One of our main goals is to create an experience that is unique to where you are depending on your location. This will require a different approach to growth and content management. We will need to find a way to make connections between people of different backgrounds easier to manage. But to grow and keep the integrity of the platform in tact we will need to come up with innovative solutions to common problems.
Giving Power to Our Users:
We do not want to become a company that micromanages its users. There will be an overarching code of conduct and user policy, but part of establishing an authentic community is allowing people from different backgrounds to be part of the decision making process in their area. As stated previously, we are committed to helping create a platform that is truly unique for different areas. To do this effectively, we will need to give more leniency as we grow and take the time to create and scale appropriately so that we are creating a safe and free thinking platform for users.
We want Plume to connect international travelers like never before. If you are in an area where the primary language is different from their own, we want them to be able to communicate with that local community. This is something that is essential to the development of each community and will require lots of resources put into localization and developing revolutionary auto translation tools that will hopefully break the language barrier and facilitate creating new connections with people who you were previously unable to communicate with.
With big goals comes big costs. Growth, development, and a sustained commitment to excellence require expenses to make this happen. We are a small team now, but as we scale and grow we would like to bring others on board to offer new insights and expertise to keep Plume innovative and give users the services they need.
...And Everything Else!
No matter how much preparation and attention to detail we give, there will always be issues that we did not account for...and that's ok! No matter what comes up, we will remain transparent, and continually make productive steps toward creating this innovative social community together.
