A new webseries featuring Dale Seever doing amazing things with Chris Gethard, Sasheer Zamata, Kelli Scarr, and Cory McAbee.

How about we go throw some tomahawks?

What is This?
Dale Radio is a podcast originating from Brooklyn. The show is hosted by Dale Seever, an alter ego created by writer & performer, James Bewley. Begun in 2009, there are now over one hundred episodes featuring Dale alone or in conversation with amazing talents from across the country. Dale’s curious about all sorts of things and his guest list reflects this. The past five seasons have welcomed people making magic in the worlds of comedy, visual arts, food, music, and film.

A year ago, Julie Miller attended her first live taping of the Dale Radio podcast, and seized upon the challenge of translating the program to video. Julie and James agreed that this new format required something different. It should probably be something with odd punctuation and an open-ended quality. And thus was hatched, Spending Time With… a new web series.

For each episode, Dale has asked a talented individual, most of whom he has never met, what they’d like to do for an afternoon. Like Dick Cavett on wheels, the four short videos will feature Dale interviewing his guests in various locations in and around New York.

Comedian Sasheer Zamata and Dale will take trapeze lessons in Williamsburg; filmmaker Cory McAbee and Dale will enjoy some beautiful scenery; musician Kelli Scarr will teach Dale the finer points of tomahawk tossing; and comedian and talk show host Chris Gethard will tour Dale around his hometown in the great state of New Jersey.

Your Support
Your contribution to this project will ensure that the production team can properly compensate the entire crew and the guests for their work. Money will go to the direct costs required to realize this as a fantastic looking, professionally-made series of episodes. Your contribution will also aid in the purchase of all the tangible production items including hard drives, storage, lights, batteries, as well as payment for trapeze clasess, and tomahawk target rentals.

UPDATE!! Your Rewards

A note from James:

I'm terrifically excited about this project. I've been performing as Dale for over ten years and have been just waiting for the right way to capture his unique spirit on film. Through conversations with Julie and Steve O and by speaking with fans near and far who have come out to the shows or sent me emails, I feel like we finally hit upon the right shape for this next step for the character.

"Dale spending time with people."

Kind of obvious, I suppose, but sometimes you need to boil things down to their essential bits before you can have fun with it. So now we have the right format, the right guests (truly, these guests are amazing), and the perfect crew to pull this off. We just need your support to make it a reality.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

One of the challenges in this project is to create something that is equally funny and visually compelling. Bewley has a background in the visual arts and is eager to bring a heightened visual sensibility to this series. To that end we have assembled a production team that has experience working in three relevant modes: documentary filmmaking, music videos, and comedy shorts. We expect the end result to be a kind of hybrid of these forms.

What this won't be is a single camera recording two people talking into a mic. This will be a dynamic series of four episodes that capture the experience of being with the guest and with Dale as they do some active things. The viewer is then also included in the "Spending Time With" scenario.

Another challenge is communicating the essence of Dale for those who have never been introduced to the character. To address this we're working on the structure and script for each to ensure that a viewer has all the information they need to gain entry into the world of Dale. While largely improvised, the episodes will be partially scripted, with introductory set ups by Dale in various locations around Brooklyn. The guests will not have a script - they'll just be informed of some topics that could come up, instead responding to the moment and Dale truthfully, as themselves in the moment. The guests are all extremely talented performers with a gift for this kind of work, and we have confidence in all of them. Also, Bewley has been performing as the character since 2002 - which means that we're not defining the character as we shoot. Dale is a fully realized persona who has a high degree of ease in interview settings, in front of audiences, and out in public. This familiarity with the character should make it easier for the uninitiated viewer to lock into who Dale is.

There are some location challenges - where do you throw a tomahawk in NY? - but Julie is a seasoned producer with experience in making things happen, so again, the team gives us confidence in our ability to overcome anything that may come up.
