About this project

Who is deskbreeze for?

deskbreeze is for those interested in aerodynamics, sailing and/ or flying. deskbreeze is very effective in school (especially for physics), for teaching sailing workshops, and for aviation schools.

deskbreeze

The first wind tunnel on your desk for teaching and learning aerodynamics.

Why a wind tunnel on a desk?

Last summer, Gerhard's daughter attended a sailing course for children. She was six years old and would enter school the following autumn. She could not read and write and therefore had trouble understanding the written course materials and the graphics. So Gerhard thought about a vivid method to explain to her the basics of aerodynamics for sailing.

Gerhard built a wind tunnel of cardboard and straws, attached to a little fog machine. It worked well, but wasn’t perfect. Through several iterations he developed a stable and simple wind tunnel, into which you can put different objects. With a simple turntable and wires you can change courses and the position of sails, for example.

How does it work?

deskbreeze uses fans and honeycomb cores to create a laminar flow, and dry ice for the visualization of the airflows. In a first prototype the honeycombcores were made of 600 cocktail strews, which really a lot of work.
Dry ice can be bought in some camping stores or in companies that sell different types of gas.

Learning through making

deskbreeze is a lightweight and simple wind tunnel to teach aerodynamic-behavior for children as well as for adults, hands-on way. Control the wind flow, explore the settings of a sail or wings and observe the effects changes. With different models you will see, how small changes of placement and position affect turbulent flows.

Who is deskbreeze for?

deskbreeze is for those interested in aerodynamics, sailing and/ or flying. deskbreeze is very effective in school (especially for physics), for teaching sailing workshops, and for aviation schools.

Furthermore, deskbreeze can be used as an eye-catcher at exhibitions or trade-shows, and in showrooms, for example. We are sure that you will come up with other ideas how to use deskbreeze for your ideas.

Risks and challenges

Gerhard presented a deskbreeze prototype at the Maker Faire in Vienna in spring 2016. It created a huge resonance, many persons asked where they could buy it. But are there enough people interested in buying deskbreeze? We would like to build a community and platform on our website, including a shop for kits and models.

If enough wind tunnels are supported, we will buy our own lasercutter instead of outsourcing the cutting of the parts, for our production to become more flexible.
