About this project
Marco Roblin and I have been working together since 2008. We already finished the first volume of EDGE OF THE UNKNOWN, and we feel like we're just getting warmed up.
Based on the positive response we got on the first volume, we want to continue telling our story, digging deeper into Houdini, Doyle, and that amazing time-period, the roaring 20's.
Here are some of those reviews that EDGE Vol. 1 got:
“Quite a feat... Catchy high concept and well-plotted out! Recommended!” -Comics Should Be Good
“This first issue has it all: historical facts, historical figures, pure terrifying scenes, and two of the coolest men in history teaming up to solve a mystery.” -Ain’t It Cool News
“Definitely one of the best Houdini-Doyle mash-ups, as well as one of the better Houdini graphic novels.” -Wild About Harry
“Pick this up!” –Bloody Disgusting
You can read the entire 30 page, first chapter of EDGE OF THE UNKNOWN Volume 1 for free!!!!

We think there's a lot of potential to the idea of Houdini and Doyle as supernatural investigators, and we're just starting to scratch the surface. Each volume will present a complete story, while at the same time being a part of a larger story arc.
EDGE OF THE UNKNOWN II will be 132 pages, black and white, with gray tones. It's quite a bit different, in tone and texture, from the previous volume.
The story takes place in a small, Southern town where tensions and divisions run high. It features a whole cast of "Circus Freaks" and even a guest appearance by Thomas Edison!
If you want to see an homage to Film-Noir, a mystery/horror story filled with historical detail... Or if you just want to support independant comics... Please help fund our book.
And please note: EDGE OF THE UNKNOWN is not available through Diamond. This is pretty much the only way to secure your copy of the upcoming sequel (unless you see me at a convention).
STRETCH GOAL: $12,000
If we reach $12,000, then every backer at the $20 level and over will receive a free, limited edition print of either Harry Houdini or Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (your choice). And every backer at the $35 level or over will receive both prints!!
Risks and challenges
EDGE OF THE UNKNOWN II is a fairly long graphic novel, 132 pages. This is a big undertaking and we're just two guys, unlike a big publishing house with lots of staff to work on the book.
We also both have families, and our families always come first. Which could mean for some unforeseen bumps in the road. For instance, when we were about halfway through with the first volume, my brother suddenly passed away. It was quite a shock for me, and I really couldn't concentrate on writing at all for a few months. But my family has always been a great support system and eventually I finished the script.
And Marco has had similar obstacles to overcome, such as the big eathquake that struck Chile a few years back. Marco lives in Chile and was right in the heart of the destruction. It was some anxious hours after I first heard about the earthquake and before I learned that Marco and his family were all ok.
But that's life, right? You just never know...
I can tell you that finacially, it was a real stretch for me to fund the first book. Between paying Marco a page rate, the printing bills, advertising, and the convention table fees, I didn't really make any money, but the response our first book got made all the work seem worth it.
Maybe we're crazy, but we're trying it again. And with your help, we can print even more books, go to more conventions, and reach a wider audience.
I, as a writer, need these stories to be as different as possible, just so I don't get bored. EDGE will always be about Houdini and Doyle pairing up to solve some sort of supernatural mystery, but everything else (to me) is up in the air.Vol. 1 takes place in the golden age of Hollywood, lots of glamor, and a big city feeling.Vol. 2 takes place in rural Louisiana, much less glamorous, and a small town where everybody knows everybody and everybody has secrets.Vol 2 is inspired by the writings of Jim Thompson, rather than Vol. 1's Lovecraft. Thompson's horror (if you want to call it that) is all internal. The ending of Vol. 1 was big, really big! I'm not trying to outdo the scale, instead I want to hit harder emotionally. At the end of Vol. 2, I want you to feel like you been slapped in the face.
