Flapping wing, small un-manned air vehicles (SUAVs) also known as ornithopters can revolutionize the civilian marketplace. Ornithopters have the potential to combine the agility and maneuverability of rotary wing aircraft with excellent cruise performance. At Da Vinci Classic Ornithopters, We have developed rugged, agile and easy to fly ornithopters. We are inspired by the great Renaissance figure Leonardo Da Vinci. He possessed a genius which went far beyond simply being a remarkable artist. Applications for our ornithopters include but are not limited to:

SUAVs that can currently perform these application require a lot of man power , training, and expense. Our ornithopters provide a low cost, rugged , and easy to fly alternative which makes them suitable for enthusiasts, hobbyists, and researchers.
A) Researchers: Da Vinci Classic Ornithopters are excellent research platforms. They can carry their own weight in additional payload. With this payload capability, our vehicles are ideal for performing airborne experiments in a wide range of fields.These vehicles have been used by the University of Maryland Morpheus Laboratory researchers to investigate wing shape morphing, guidance and control, aerodynamic modeling and simulations. They have also set several flight test records and research breakthroughs.
B) Bird, SUAV Hobbyists and Enthusiasts: You will be able to fly with and like birds using our ornithopter flight platforms. During flight tests, birds will typically come and fly along side of you. You will be able to fly this vehicle in parks, open fields or just about anywhere. Unlike other SUAV’s, you will not require a runway or a FAA license to fly them. Also our vehicles are highly customizable. Feel free to change the wing design or make a new tail with a vertical stabilizer. Your options are limitless!!

We are committed to bringing strong engineering principles to the design of our ornithopters. We have spent a considerable amount of time and money analyzing the basic Kinkade architecture. This includes Finite Element models of the frame/wing structure and associated modal analysis. We also investigated the flow field over the wings during flight using Computational Fluid Dynamics. Finally we have modeled the Aerodynamics of flight using Lifting Section theory. We concluded that the basic Kinkade design was indeed a good one but one that needed engineering design mods for more efficient flight.
We found for example that the transmission impedance was quite high making it difficult to turn and thus requiring substantial battery current. We've improved that now such that the gears are easily turned by hand. This means more flight time and less work for the batteries. Also there was significant body twist or "tail wagging" during flight. You can even see this in the SDrone models. If you tap the body it will resonate for quite a while with very light damping. We've modified the body moment of inertia to reduce this as much as possible. We also replaced the motors with high quality brushless motors.
Aerodynamically the triangular region of the wing or Luff region is responsible for lift in forward flight and its tension properties are crucial for best lift. This is the so called circulation lift. We use rip stop material that is properly tensioned for good lift. The rear flap produces the forward thrust and must move up and down efficiently to produce forward motion, much like a Mermaid tail. All of these engineering concerns have been taken into account in this upgrade. We fly an on board avionics package that contains tri-axial accelerometers, three axis gyros, magnetometers etc. to observe these parameters during flight . We have published much of the data collected in technical journal papers. We've tried to made as many improvements as possible while keeping the price low. If we can establish a market position then we will gradually add new components like an advanced solid state transmission and wing morphing. Our passive wing morphing additions have resulted in a 45% reduction in power required for straight and level flight.

The body includes the flapping transmission system, the full gear train and all the necessary mounts for the flight motor and servos. - The Do-it Yourself Kit (DIY)
This package includes the fuselage (body), wings, tail and all the linkages, gears and hardware that you need to mount the wings and tail. This kit comes with instructions and recommendations for motors, servos, and batteries.
- Frequent Flyer Kit (FFK)
If you are familiar with the world of R/C SUAVS and have your own share of batteries, speed controllers and transmitters, then this kits is for you. This is our best value package, it includes the fuselage (body), wings, tail, motor, servos and all the joints, gears and hardware that you need for assembly. (Minimal assembly is required for this kit.) This kit also comes with instructions and recommendations for batteries and speed controllers.

The University of Maryland’s Morpheus Laboratory has been studying bio-inspired flapping wing flight for the past 8 years. It was hard in the beginning to get repeatability and consistency of flight in commercially available ornithopters. With the help of graduate students, post graduate engineers, and Post Doctoral Fellows, a fleet of 5 custom modified research ornithopters, and many flight tests,the Lab becaome very successful at producing high quality ornithopters for its research programs. Subsequently the Morpheus Lab has set many precedents using flapping wing air vehicles including in-flight acceleration and aerodynamic load data collection, passive wing morphing and modeling and simulation algorithms. All of this experience results in a greatly reduced risk, high production reliability and minimum delays to the community. Morpheus Lab’s ornithopters have proven over time to be rugged, agile and easy to fly. There is a clear need in the market for such vehicles as demonstrated by increasing customer demand. Da Vinci Classic Ornithopters (DCO) has approached the Morpheus Lab in an effort to mass produce their ornithopters and service the commercial market demand. The average ornithopter that the Morpheus Lab produced in limited quantity cost them $1200. This was clearly not a commercially viable price, so we at Da Vinci Classic Ornithopters came up with a plan and worked with many potential OEM suppliers to greatly reduce the cost per vehicle.
Now you are the final step to this process. We need a bulk order of 50 or more to keep the price low and make these ornithopters affordable.
DCO is uniquely qualified for this project because we are building on 8 years of Morpheus Lab research and flight experience in the areas of aerodynamics structures and control. We have wide access to a ranging pool of resources through consultants, graduate students, professors and engineers. We have access to manufacturing space for fabrication. We also have design templates for repeatability as well as a flight test range for quality control.
