About this project
We are thrilled to introduce the Hopscotch wall mount. It’s a little mount designed to keep your phone and keys safe, secure and close-by. If you have ever wanted to keep your phone conveniently located, as you bounce from place to place, we believe that you are going to love this little product.
As you move from room to room, from your house, to the car, or even to the office, your phone moves with you. But while we always have a place to temporarily call home as we move through the world (whether it’s a seat, chair, couch, or even a bed), our smart phones are regularly misplaced. They’re accidentally placed on top of books, on desks, on chairs, in cup holders, or worse. You may find yourself asking yourself and countless others “where’s my phone?” when the question should never need to be asked in the first place.
Now, with Hopscotch, your iPhone can finally have a place to land as well, even if just for a little while.
Hopscotch was designed with two specific aims in mind: 1) to hold your phones, and 2) to hold your keys. And we always knew that we wanted to keep things as simple as possible. The underlying goal was to provide you with a little product that you’d be happy to place wherever your heart desired.
- Mounting is a breeze. The mount attaches to most vertical surfaces with wall-friendly, double-sided 3M strips. In other words, anywhere there is a surface there is a place for a Hopscotch.
- Your phone stays clean - there’s no need to permanently affix anything to your phone to make our mount work.
- It’s secure by design - the Hopscotch provides a safe cradle for your phone, whether it’s meant to remain on a wall or sit somewhere on your car dashboard. Once the Hopscotch is securely mounted, your phone will stay put.
- It accommodates many attachments - whether you choose to plug in your headphones, your charger or talk over your speakerphone, Hopscotch provides plenty of room for attachments.
Because so many people keep their phones wrapped inside a case of one sort or another, we realized that it is important to provide something that can work with or without a case. Hopscotch was designed to hold the iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S by itself or with a thin- to medium-sized case. Hopscotch also works with a variety of iPhones, including the iPhone 4, 4S, 5 and 5S. This version of the Hopscotch also works with a variety of cases – everything from Apple’s own cases to many thin cases that you can find on the market.
The truth is: Hopscotch was born of pure necessity. You see at Lollygig, we depend on our smart phones (perhaps a little too much), but we’re terrible at remembering where our phones are. And we’ve definitely lost our keys a few too many times. As we listened and watched others experience the same annoying and exasperating experience of searching endlessly (and needlessly!) for their phones and keys, we had our own “aha” moment.
We wished to spend some time trying to find a solution that might help solve an unnecessarily annoying problem. So we designed one mount, and then another. Soon we had enough positive feedback to put some serious effort behind this little project. It seemed that we were on to something.
We played around with a variety of features, aesthetic choices and colors. In the end, we chose to borrow from Apple’s design cues, choosing to exaggerate certain elements at times. The radius of the corners mattered immensely, and we chose to emphasize a nice big chamfer to complement Apple’s subtle edge on the iPhone 5 and 5S. Some of the sketches and designs that were part of the Hopscotch design process can be found below.
Numerous prototypes led to the design shown here today. They varied in height, depth and width. The shape changed a great deal as we played with the concept as well.
We came to Kickstarter because we’d love to bring you an injection-molded version of Hopscotch. After creating several prototype versions that have been tested in homes, offices and cars, we’ve realized that the product requires a plastic that can hold up under temperature changes (e.g. car interiors). And while it’s possible to print in other plastics, we’d love to bring you a product that is more affordably priced with a higher fit and finish.
With your help we’ll be able to cover the tooling costs for the injection-molded version of the product.
We’re ready to start production just as soon as our Kickstarter campaign comes to a close. Hopscotch has already been reviewed by our internal design and engineering team, and we have initial quotes from our manufacturer. Once the Kickstarter campaign is completed, we’ll keep you posted on manufacturing and expected delivery times.
Lollygig imagines and launches original designs for people, for the planet, and most of all for fun. By harnessing the talent and skills of creative teams, we uncover opportunities, envision concepts, and launch solutions that address real problems and unmet needs.
Founded in 2010, Lollygig hit its first commercial success by co-developing an app called BoomMaster just weeks after the launch of Apple’s original iPad. Within the first thirty seconds of holding the tablet, we started carrying it around on our shoulders saying “wouldn’t it be awesome if there was a boom box app for the iPad?” Two weeks later BoomMaster was born and quickly topped the What’s New section of Apple’s App Store (sold through Gorilla Group). Since then the company has focused on designing and launching soft- and hard-good accessories for mobile devices.
Risks and challenges
There are always unforeseen issues when moving a product from development to production. Having been down this road both within our own company and with clients, we feel confident that we’ll be able to address any issues that may arise.
We would love to ship our product early, and we will do everything we can to make this happen. We are committed to making Hopscotch a product of high quality that is delivered as soon as possible.
Our distribution team is lined up, and we can’t wait to get started. They’re ready when we’re ready.
Yes! It took some work to accommodate a range of different phone and case sizes. We had originally believed that it was good enough to focus on only “naked” iPhones. But when even Apple started to sell its own cases, we realized that most people really did prefer to have a case of some sort to reduce scratches and breaks. So we built Hopscotch to work with both naked phones and thin- to medium-sized cases. Many fit and size-tests later, we arrived at a Hopscotch size that felt good. (See Update #2 for examples.)
Good question. Strike that. Great question! We didn't initially. But we're taking international shipping requests now. Thanks for asking and for your interest!
Hopscotch is patent-pending. So, yes! Yes, we did.
Once the Kickstarter crowdfunding process is completed, we'll send out a survey. You'll be able to specify your preference and choice at that time.
