We've hit our goal! The support for this project has been incredible so far, but it's just the start. $20k is a very meager budget for a film, so to keep incentivizing pledges, we've come up with a number of stretch goals to hopefully keep increasing the budget to make the best possible film for all of you.
We're making a feature-length documentary about the history, culture, and inner-workings of the Christian music industry, through the lens of those involved. We hope this exploration will create space for reflection, discernment, and honest conversations.
As musicians (Emery, As Cities Burn, The Classic Crime) who contributed to and benefitted from the subversive indie/punk scene that was a response to "mainstream" Christian music, we often found ourselves at the intersection of many different genres, giving us a unique perspective on how each distinct business culture operates within the Christian music industry.
Our experiences were eye-opening, and taught us that despite the general consensus of it's clientele, the Christian music industry is a business that functions like any other; on the principle of profit. What makes it unique, is that the profit incentive is often motivated by religious image & language control. As the music industry has declined over the past few decades, dwindling returns have incentivized the profit-securing practice for Christian artists and labels to project an image that is often contrary their individual values.
Our goal is to craft a documentary that
- Uncovers the truth about dishonest image control
- Explores the profit motives that influence faith-based music
- Redeems the honest aspects of the industry & artists involved
We believe there is a need to fully explore, as objectively as we can, the history of how art, faith and business have converged over the past several decades.
BadChristian Media is a co-op producing and distributing podcasts, books, music, and more - all with the desire to have open, real conversations about faith, art and life. http://badchristianmedia.com
We’re a ragtag bunch of musicians and videographers with behind-the-scenes experience in the Christian music world. Our filmmaker/production team currently includes Matt Carter, Matt MacDonald, Aaron Lunsford, and James Wightman, with more to be added soon.
What’s in the digital download package?
It's a copy of the finished film that you can play on your computer, media player, or phone!
When are the film premieres?
They will be schedule when the film is done. We promise we will give you a heads up WAY in advance.
Can I gift reward?
YES! Spectacular idea. If you would like to support the film but give the reward to someone as a gift, go through all the normal process of making a donation in your name. For billing purposes, this action must be in your name. After our deadline, we will send a message to you on Kickstarter. (It will be forwarded to the email address you provided) We will request things like your t-shirt size and address from you at that time. Please reply with all the person’s information that is to receive the reward. We will make sure they are the person who receives the reward.
If the film is funded, when will it release?
We’re ready to go to work right away, but there are a lot of moving pieces to something like this - a big one being submission to festivals. If this is as good as we think it can be, commercial release might be delayed as we try to get it more attention, support and notoriety beforehand. Rest assured all of us involved will make sure you know when it’s due to release.
Can I increase my pledge once it’s been made?
YES! Once you donate to our campaign, you may want to change your incentive reward to a different one, or increase your pledge amount. To do so, go to Kickstarter and sign in. If you go to our campaign page, the green “Back This Project” button has been replaced with a blue “Manage Your Donation” button. Click it and you can enter a new amount, or choose a new incentive.
What happens if the money isn’t raised in time?
Unfortunately, nothing. If our goal isn’t met before the deadline, no money changes hands and no movie is made (yet). We want to avoid this scenario at all costs, and you play a key role in that!
Can we exceed the goal?
YES! What an amazing problem to have. Kickstarter will allow as much money as is given before the deadline. Maybe that would mean a more widespread theater release, or more unique physical copy packaging. The possibilities are endless.
How do we contact you?
Either through this Kickstarter campaign by messaging us, or by emailing us at email@example.com
When do I get my stuff?
All incentives, big and small, will only happen if our goal is met. If we do meet our goal, immediately after our deadline we will start the process to finish the film, which could take as long as six months. When it's done, we will manufacture and ship all physical merch directly to you. It will be our priority to schedule the more personal incentives as soon as possible. You will hear from us. (More on this as we get closer to our deadline)
Who does the money go to?
Every penny (minus the fees for Kickstarter’s involvement) will go directly to BC Media's film production budget - i.e. Your money goes directly to funding travel to record interviews, production equipment, editing, coloring, graphics, and all other expenses related to the film.
$20,000 seems like a low number for a movie budget. Doesn’t it?
You are correct. Even "B movies" or "low budget" films often have budgets of between $5M and $20M, while documentary film budgets scrape the bottom at around $1,000 per finished minute (think 90 minutes = $90k). Fortunately, we’re just like you, and we’ve built careers out of a DIY mentality. We’ve already filmed some of the work out of our own pocket. The $20,000 figure is the absolute minimum we need to commit to this project full steam ahead. Our goal is imperative for the film to be a reality.
Risks and challenges
We will admit, the film business is uncharted waters for us. But so was music and podcasting and publishing books, and we've successfully done those things while fulfilling our obligations to thousands of people over dozens of crowd-funds like this one.
We've paid out of pocket and called in favors for the footage we've shot and edited so far, but we're asking for help to begin the long trek to the finish line.
Once production starts, there are dozens of key interviews to get all over the country, decades worth of archival footage to be reviewed, and hundreds of upcoming hours worth of production (manning cameras, capturing audio, etc.) and post-production (editing, music, color grading, graphics, etc.) in order to make this a reality. That's why your help is so important. We've got a bold plan in place, but you're the key ingredient to help us execute it.
There are a lot of moving pieces here, and we want this to be as entertaining and meaningful as possible, so we are open to deadlines having to move if they have to. We've estimated when we might be able to finish, but variables could always push us back some. We thank you for your patience in advance, and we will keep you updated on the process as the project continues.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
