I completely agree with the previous posts from Sarah. Incorporating the potential effects of climate change onto people's daily routines will be more convincing or eye opening to the public than the environment alone. Learning about serve weather, droughts, food shortages, etc. as a result from the influencing climate change has had more of an impact on gaining my attention. I had one professor put water sxarcity into perspective when he told an antidote of his trip to Germany and how a little girl was upset with him for taking a 7 minute shower. You never realize that climate change could potentially change your daily bathing regimes as we loose a resource. I agree that awareness from the general public is important and I love this idea. Keep working towards the goal!

Also, I would call it "Climate Change" and not "Global Warming."

      Hi Julian,

I think this is a great idea! However, your message isn't anything different than what people have seen in the past. You're showing imagery of melting ice caps and desert, neither of which affects people. This doesn't illustrate the true threat that climate change poses to people such as: rising water on the coasts that would force people to move from their homes and businesses, food shortages from extreme droughts and flooding, water shortages (not necessarily from climate change but from habits similar to those that have caused climate change), cancelled travel plans due to extreme weather, etc. I'd HIGHLY recommend reframing the message so it includes things like this that people can relate to and understand. They've all seen the polar bear struggling to find land, and that hasn't worked. One of my main goals as a human is to get our society to adopt sustainability as a core value, so your project really resonates with me. Let me know if you'd like to talk about this further. I'm currently in grad school and am working on a project that could be a good partnership for this ad. Glad you're thinking big!! We really need this!

      greetings julian,
thanks for taking the initiative. my suggestion is to include 10 sec or so about Ways to Move Forward. Climate change is underway, there are things we can do to adapt, regarding food, energy, etc. The transition town movement (transitionus.org, transitionnetwork.org) is the best example i know of, there may be others as well. It was started by permaculture teacher rob hopkins in Ireland 12 years. ago.
Ultimately, the 'best case' scenario, imo, involves the emergence of what dr king called the beloved community, where everyone taking care of everyone - e.g. hundreds of millions of climate refugees - is normalized. Maybe that should be the focus of the ad.....? http://www.thekingcenter.org/king-philosophy
i know it's getting close- hope you will still launch the campaign. there are 'big names'- redford, dicaprio, who -based on their work- would probably contribute too. i can spread the word to a few people here in jersey.
      thanks very much!
      best,
      sarah

I have a Master's degree in science communication. I posted the Powder magazine story about your 2018 effort to my Twitter feed.

Researchers at my university (George Mason) helped come up with the idea of the Six Americas--a spectrum of climate concern.

I am the alarmed category (Can we please fix this problem now, before we all die?). Super Bowl fans might be more conservative and less convinced of the need to act.

This ad is great for people who already care, but it needs to be more geared toward people who don't yet get it.

People don't think major disasters will happen to them.

Show them their grandpa suffering from heat exhaustion. Show them higher prices at the supermarket. Show people in a typically temperate region wearing shorts on Thanksgiving.

They can relate to those things and they will feel they have the ability to change them (efficacy). If you scare them, they will stop listening and change the channel.

A trusted expert wouldn't hurt, either. (Al Roker, Jim Cantore, etc.)

I'm a science writer. I would be happy to write a piece and post it to my blog, if you'd like.

Thanks for this effort. I think this is a fantastic project.
