We did it!!!!!!! Thank you so much to everyone for helping us reach our fundraising goal. Now to start booking the tour for the spring! Any additional donations will be put towards the cost of publicity for the tour, and lodging and lost wages for the month that we will be gone. Thank you all again, SO MUCH!!!!
We're the Blue Cranes, a jazz / not jazz group out of Portland, Oregon, and we're embarking on this Kickstarter campaign to help fund a tour by train of our new album across North America in the spring of 2011.
We've been together as a quintet since 2007, and have self-funded seven tours of the West Coast. This time, in conjunction with the release of Observatories, our third album, we're hoping to reach out even farther, to the East Coast.
Which is why we need your help.
We love playing music with each other and sharing music with different audiences. Expanding our tour route will afford us the opportunity to do more of what we love. Depending on where you live, it may offer you a chance to see us perform live.
In addition, this tour will allow us to connect with a community of artists on the East Coast who are working in similar musical traditions and pushing similar boundaries. This trip will be a chance for us to listen and to grow artistically as individuals and as a group.
Why tour by train?
Not only do we want to push the current boundaries of music composition and sound; we also want to challenge the current concept of touring, generally involving a van or a bus, which consumes lots of gas, and is also draining on the band members themselves. In these respects, the train offers a more sustainable way to tour.
This isn't a new concept, but the way that train infrastructure is funded versus the way automobile infrastructure is funded in this country makes touring by train cost prohibitive. Through publicizing this tour, we hope to promote the train as a worthy mode of transportation in the U.S. and, hopefully, help in a small way to bring about a change in the way our rail system is funded.
Tentative Tour Route:
Portland --> Minneapolis --> Chicago (Empire Builder train)
Detroit --> Cleveland --> Boston (Lake Shore Limited train)
Boston --> Providence --> NYC --> Philadelphia --> D.C. (Northeast Regional train)
St. Louis (Texas Eagle train)
Kansas City (Mississippi Runner train)
Denver --> Salt Lake City --> Sacramento (California Zephyr train) --OR-- Santa Fe --> L.A. (Southwest Chief train)
Sacramento --> Portland (Coast Starlight train)
We've invested a lot of time, money and resources into making our new album, and we're excited to share it with you, but now we're a little short on funds.
30 Day Amtrak Rail Pass ($579) x 5 band members = $2895
Transportation to and from train stations ($50) x 20 shows = $1000
Food allowance ($15 per person per day) x 30 days = $2250
We hope to make enough money at the shows on tour to cover the additional costs not included above: Lodging ($75/night?), publicist costs, and our own personal bills at home for the month we are gone.
Why should you support the Blue Cranes on tour?
- You will have the satisfaction of knowing that you helped us realize this dream.
- You may make it possible for us to play live for you and for others who don't usually get to see us.
- You will be supporting the growth of this band and of independent music.
We have a lot of thank you gifts to offer depending on your level of contribution.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!!!
P.S. If you live in Portland or elsewhere on the West Coast, please come to a show this month (August 2010) for our West Coast album release sneak preview tour. See www.bluecranesmusic.com for more details.
We would like to give a huge thank you to Evan Driscoll--organic farmer, father, and filmmaker extraordinaire--for filming and editing this kickstarter video. Thanks Evan!
We would also like to thank the kind people at the Columbia Gorge Model Railroad Club for letting us spend an evening playing with their trains.
