The Chuubo's Marvelous Wish-Granting Engine RPG is a progressive, warm-hearted diceless game for both adventure and slice-of-life play.

Congratulations!

$15+ Pledges have Unlocked the ePub of:

  • Fortitude: by the Docks of Big Lake, a marvelous ~150k word supplement!
  • Fortitude: the Glass-Maker's Dragon, a massive ~230k word campaign!
  • the novel Fable of the Swan . . . and more!

$25+ Pledges have Unlocked the ePub & PDF of:
  • Fortitude: by the Docks of Big Lake, a marvelous ~150k word supplement!
  • Fortitude: the Glass-Maker's Dragon, a massive ~230k word campaign!
  • the novel Fable of the Swan . . . and more!

You can buy a print copy of Fortitude: by the Docks of Big Lake as a $40 add-on (or $50 for shipping outside the U.S.)!

You can buy a print copy of Fortitude: the Glass-Maker's Dragon as a $60 add-on (or $70 for shipping outside the U.S.)!

Since that last option became available with roughly 8 hours to go, and since some people had difficulty accessing the campaign, we are offering limited secondary funding via paypal at Jenna's blog through July 22. This may complete the final stretch goal but will not allow for new ones. ^_^

Curious about what it's like to play in a Chuubo's Marvelous Wish-Granting Engine game? There's an example of play available here!

Project not updating often enough for you? Hungry for quotes, fan art, strange author noises, and little bits of news? And is the world still young enough that the following address hasn't been hacked, stolen, or recycled into something new?

Check out my new (currently Chuubo's-focused) tumblr!

Sometime after the world drowned I found myself on one of the boats that go to Town.

I didn’t know yet that the world had fallen.

Being and nothingness were swallowed, both of them, by the tidal wave of the Outside, but I hadn’t noticed yet, because I’d been living in one of the places that got covered by it, and so I’d stopped existing in any kind of defined way for a little while.

Then one of the exploring boats found Suzhou, where I’d been living. It made Suzhou exist again, more or less. It stopped being a wild, chaotic delirium and became a place again . . . more or less.

I don’t think I was fully real again yet when I boarded.

I didn’t wake up, not all the way, until the boat crested the horizon of Big Lake and I saw the dockside settlement of Fortitude for the first time. Then it was like my heart woke up, and everything that had been black and white became color, and the textures of the world came back, and sound had richness and deepness once again.

It wasn’t because I’d been unreal, exactly.

It was part of it, I think, but only part of it. It was because . . . it was because as soon as I saw Fortitude I understood that work would be rewarded; that things had a beautiful simplicity; and that I had a home.

I guess that if you’re reading this then you are real. As I write this, you are mildly notional, of course. You can’t possibly be as real as the wood of the buildings, the depth of the air, the sounds of fish being sliced open and the smell of marlin cooking on a limestone slab. You’re part of the diffuse potential of “you could be reading this.”

But by the time you actually see this I guess you must be someone real. You must be a real, physical person, in one of the reclaimed regions, and maybe not even knowing that the world was lost. You might not even realize that you’ve been cheated, that there could be —

That there was more.

So come. Come to a little place called Town, in the middle of nowhere, circled by its reborn sun. Come, at least in play, and maybe in person if you can stand giving up some of the modern luxuries, and feel what it’s like to really live.

There is so much to experience here. You could live.

Hi! This is Jenna Moran, author and creator of Nobilis, Hitherby Dragons, much of the setting and rules material from the Weapons of the Gods RPG, and, in Exalted’s Games of Divinity, what’s been called “the coolest Hell in gaming.” I've also been a major contributor to a number of other products for Exalted, Trinity, In Nomine, and other gaming lines.

Today I’m excited to bring you the Chuubo’s Marvelous Wish-Granting Engine RPG and—if the fates and your contributions favor it—its first two supplements!

It’s a game in the spirit of Miyazaki films like Laputa, anime like Princess Tutu, and Western works like Adventure Time and Friendship is Magic — a game of heroic innocents growing up against a backdrop of strange events and haunting landscapes.

It’s an RPG that strives, as its first principle, to make it worthwhile to spend your time on both the little things and the big ones — a game that’s meaningful and fun whether your characters are drinking tea with their friends, exploring their new home, doing their daily round of chores, or hunting horrors in the dark. It’s a work that strives, as its second principle, to bend but not break when the same people who were sweeping or arguing over television shows a few minutes before start throwing around godly powers, breaking the world with their poorly-phrased wishes, and heading out into the dark to challenge Death.

It’s a game that’s designed to run away with you. It’s designed to take the little things you think and do in play and escalate them into ever-building stories. And it’s designed to give you a world of dreams in which to host your second life.

Right now it’s a bunch of words in some text files, plus an art book that I’m doing my best to lay out on my own. I’d like to give it a better treatment than that before I give it to you, though. I’d like to turn it into a gorgeous print RPG. And then I want to take the first region book, Fortitude: by the Docks of Big Lake, and the first campaign book, Fortitude: the Glass-Maker’s Dragon, and turn them into keepsakes worth the treasuring as well.

The Chuubo’s Marvelous Wish-Granting Engine RPG is built around the following core mechanical ideas:

  • XP-giving actions answer questions like “What do I do here/now?”
  • Escalating "Issues" organize these into longer-term dramatic movements in a character’s story; and
  • "Quests" mechanically structure activities—anything from scientific research to raising a child—in a form that provides both character advancement and dramatic pacing, giving you both new XP-earning options and a place to spend the stuff.

These tools allow for a thoroughly modern design for the setting material, one that can discuss what happens and how something plays out as easily as what is there. They also pushed Fortitude: the Glass-Maker's Dragon to what I suspect to be the cutting edge of RPG campaign design:

It's not only the best thing I've ever written but I suspect that you can get ~500 hours of tightly-themed gaming from it without prep or players feeling on rails.

(It’s possible that someone’s lapped me while I wasn't looking and it's not actually cutting edge. That'd be OK. It’d still be the best thing I’ve ever written and 500 hours of enormous fun.)

I have three large books I want to get out there and in your hands:

  • The Chuubo’s Marvelous Wish-Granting Engine RPG, a 240k-word diceless successor to the Nobilis RPG set in a lakeside town bordering on both spiritual and alien worlds;
  • Fortitude: by the Docks of Big Lake, a 150k-word Region book covering everything you’d need to live or to play there; and
  • Fortitude: the Glass-Maker’s Dragon, a 230k-word campaign complete with campaign-specific character generation tools, playbooks, quests, and numerous story Arcs.

So we’re going to start with the most important stretch goals, the stretch goals that let me get awesome versions of these things into your hands:

  • $40,000 - I can do the first book the way I want to do the first book.
  • $58,000 - and the second
  • $80,000 - and the third

There's also some little treats I'd like to offer along the way, like a PDF release of the popular (but out of print, and expensive to re-acquire art rights for) second edition of Nobilis; the novel Fable of the Swan; and a handful of short stories. At the time of this writing, only Nobilis is still in question---

You've won everything else for yourself, and for me. Thank you!

Here's the stretch goal chart---now, with free smiles! ^_^

Interested in a little more? Here's what you can add on to your order:

Or, for those of you with more specialized needs:

I’m planning to work with Studio Shadow for layout and art direction. Here's their logo!

Stephen Lea Sheppard is handling the books' editing.

I’m planning to print and release the book through Eos-sama and with the assistance of its CEO Jesse Covner and owner Syn Chen (who are also managing this kickstarter and its funds.)

Here's their logo:

Would you like to submit a real or idealized version of yourself or your favorite (more or less human) PC? The "Art Sponsor" reward commissions a piece of art for the book, which will feature your described avatar as a background character in the relevant artist’s style. You can realize yourself (or someone else you have rights to let us show) as either (1) pretty close to how you actually look given the artist's style or (2) an idealized version (with possible changes in eyes, hair, height, weight, sex, coolness, age, &c.) that's either:

  • human,
  • human with Excrucian eyes,
  • human with extra fox ears,
  • stretchable-neck human,
  • vampire,
  • tree spirit,
  • steampunk robot, or
  • a talking rat.

If you have a particular artist that you want to commission, and they’re suitable to the book’s style, talk to me and them and be prepared to contribute enough to cover their fee plus the costs of fulfillment and we might be able to make it happen!

You can choose whether we can use the character write-up you provide us as the basis for later art, but I’m not equipped to prevent artists from taking inspiration from the final image that appears in the book---if you want to prevent the character themselves from recurring later, please let me know, and I’ll ask the artist to do a version with you to send you and a version without your avatar to appear in the book itself.

Normally the character will appear in the background of artwork in the Chuubo's Marvelous Wish-Granting Engine RPG but:

  • starting at the $60,000 funding level, the commissioned piece may appear in Fortitude: by the Docks of Big Lake instead;
  • starting at the $80,000 funding level, the commissioned piece may appear in Fortitude: the Glass-Maker's Dragon instead;
  • if you want to ensure that the character will not recur, I won't be able to include them in the book;
  • if a character is too close to the line on the criteria above (e.g., where I'm only mostly convinced that you have rights to the character or only mostly convinced that the character is more or less human) I might not be able to include them in the book;
  • unlike the PDF and print versions, the ePub releases will not necessarily contain all of the book's art.

There is a certain ship that the angel of the houses of the sun passed over on her way from life to death, and those who traveled on that ship that day are blessed.

Would you like your name to be listed on the rolls of those who were on that ship that day?

Soon after the public release of Fortitude: by the Docks of Big Lake I'll be putting up a little book for sale with a lifepath, quest set, and adventures for those who  were on that ship — tentatively, "the Legendary 76," although that's just a working number and a working title.

Pledges and add-ons that give you membership in the legendary 76 will give you the chance to include your name (or a sensible variant, like nickname last-name or first-name last-initial), optionally your gender, and, in a different section, your best Skill in the options for that lifepath.

You can also pick up the ePub & PDF of the mini-supplement itself (it's about 13k words, you'll get a working draft shortly after the kickstarter ends, and I'll be giving it proper editing, layout, and art later on) as a $2 add-on, or free with anything that gives you membership!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

Writing/Development

I feel pretty safe here. The books are written, the files are in numerous hands and have been read by multiple eyes, and I suspect people will begin reading and discussing the working draft within a few days of the kickstarter starting. The worst that can happen is the embarrassment of needing errata.

I will be adding a few stretch goals at later points in the project that require me to write more. If I hit a six-month stretch of physical or mental disability that prevents this from happening, I have a rolodex of awesome writers that can step in, but . . . honestly, that seems pretty unlikely. I’ve tried to front-load my contribution to this project as much as possible.

Art/Layout

While I’m slowly getting better at managing this myself, and have a reasonably solid plan for how to proceed if the project funds minimally, I plan to offload this on a solid professional team.

Printing and Shipping

I’ve been assured by Eos-sama that setting aside printing funds and having printing and shipping happen as soon as the book is ready is viable. That said, I’ve priced things so that I can afford DriveThruRPG print-on-demand as a printing plan of last resort.

FAQ

  • There are two game elements that I conceptualize, in their platonic ideal form, as "cards"---graphic/text thingies that you'll have in front of you in tabletop play. I'm hoping to fit Issue cards into something index-card sized and quest cards into oversized cards (somewhere between half-page and page sized.)

This is an optional form factor. There aren't any mechanics associated with these things being cards except the "you may have these in front of you during a tabletop game." That said, it's how I'd like them to be/appear.

The default form---what you'll get at the basic funding level---is that you'll either xerox, hand-copy, or download and print these if you want them in card form.

They'll appear in the book in a format designed for that use, and I expect that the electronic form (that anyone funding at $25+ will get) will include a separate downloadable with just the relevant handouts and cards.

If we make it past $80,000, then at some point there will be a stretch goal designed to make these awesome. If that seems like something that's going to be a concern, then I'll be looking into how to include physical cards with physical-book orders.

If this kickstarter blows me away with its success, then at some point there'll be a discussion of how to release boxed sets. I make no promises here, since that is purely one Jenna Moran speculating about the future before completing any sort of investigation of feasibility.

  • Yes.

Let's say that you already have an electronic copy of the novel "Fable of the Swan," which is now part of all the $15+ pledge packages. The e-copy that you'll receive from the pledge package will most likely be instructions on how to download an authorized copy from DriveThruRPG or Smashwords. (There's a small chance that I'll wind up emailing you a copy or offering an Eos-based or Jenna-based download link to you instead.) In any case, just pass the relevant information on to someone else and they'll have that authorized copy instead.

Or let's say that you get an add-on that comes with an electronic copy of something. Since it's an add-on, you probably already *have* that electronic copy---so it's my expectation that you'll either ignore the second electronic copy or pass it on to a friend.

There is a chance that the download code/instructions/link/something for supplements like Fortitude: by the Docks of Big Lake will be the same code as for your e-copy of the Chuubo's Marvelous Wish-Granting Engine RPG. In this case, it may be harder to divide up your electronic goods and give only some of them to someone else. I can't imagine a reasonable circumstance where you'd *want* to do this but you can contact me if it becomes necessary and I'll help you out.

  • If the supplements fund under this kickstarter, pledge packages of $25+ will receive ePub & PDF copies automatically and I'm expecting the ePub sponsors to get ePub copies as well.

Pledge packages at $400+ (Dedicated Friend, VIP, people who spend $400+ on a different pledge package and contact me to explain that they're hoping for this) will receive signed print-form copies of any supplements funded under this kickstarter by default. I'll also be making print-form copies of funded supplements available as an add-on once they fund.

This model is technically specific to "Fortitude: by the Docks of Big Lake" and "Fortitude: the Glass-Maker's Dragon." It's also my default model for any other supplements funded under this kickstarter but I haven't formally committed to it.

  • This has a meaningful up-front cost, so I can't really talk about it until we're past $80k. Sorry!

    Last updated:
  • Simple! You just add the appropriate amount to your order for all the add-ons you want. Later, after the kickstarter finishes, I'll send out a survey to backers and find out which add-ons you wanted. If you miscounted or something and your total doesn't work, I'll give you a chance to kick in a little extra or get an appropriate refund!

VIP--- In addition to the benefits of Dedicated Friend, I’ll work with you to develop your Avatar into an NPC to be added to a later supplement — most likely, Fortitude: the Glass-Maker’s Dragon. Between the development of the NPC and the release of the appropriate supplement, and possibly to remain there afterwards, I’ll also slip the NPC into the ePub release of the Chuubo’s Marvelous Wish-Granting Engine RPG.
