In April of 2013 I performed two concerts with the FM Classic Radio Orchestra based in Sofia, the capital city of Bulgaria. I was quite excited by this collaboration, knowing about the incredibly high level of string-playing in Bulgaria.
The first half featured two of my favorite baroque-era trumpet concertos: Albinoni's Concerto St. Marc and Tartini's Concerto in D Major. The second half featured jazz arrangements and an amazing Bulgarian rhythm section.
The whole experience was a total blast for me. I immediately started thinking of a project I'd been planning for several years: to record some of my favorite baroque and classical concertos. Now, you might reasonably ask: why record a bunch of concertos that have already been recorded many times?
Well, I view it as an important personal milestone. I have recorded jazz projects, contemporary "classical" projects, and projects/pieces that combine various genres. However, I have yet to record these works that have been dear to my heart (and very frequently on my concert programs!) since I was about 13 years old.
I priced it out with the organization and found the project cost of recording (including the fees for the orchestra, conductor, engineer and venue) to be very reasonable: about $16,000 USD!
I applied for and received $6000 in grant money for this project from VCU's School of the Arts. So - we have dates to record (February 21-24) but need to secure the rest of the funding.
I hope you'll find this to be a worthy project to support: a new take on these classic pieces by someone who specializes in improvisation; this will include improvised cadenzas for every work. I plan to record multiple improvised takes and let Kickstarter supporters vote on the ones they prefer!
Thank you so much for your consideration!
Risks and challenges
Barring some unexpected calamities (such as Icelandic volcanoes impeding travel to Europe, or political upheaval), there should be no obstacles to finishing this project. The tracks will all be laid down in 4 days, then it's a matter of editing and creating a master back in the States.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
