Bristol is a fantastically musically diverse city with one of the most established Afro-Caribbean street carnivals in the UK - St Paul's Carnival. St Paul's Carnival started in 1968 and is a multi-cultural event celebrating Carnival culture from around the world including the famous masquerade procession.
As part of the procession, Bristol based groups such as Ilu Axé, Bristol Samba and Batala Bristol perform each year. Currently there is no provision for young people who wish to join a Samba group (or Bloco as they are also called) in our city. Following feedback from workshops at local schools, we know that there is demand and interest for a Samba group specifically aimed at young people.
Our project aims to recruit participants from across Bristol to form a 30-piece percussion group and a 20-strong dance troupe, specifically targeting those from disadvantaged backgrounds. It will also involve the recruitment of several "Young Leaders" to provide the opportunity for young people to gain experience in leadership skills and musical education. Following weekly rehearsals and weekend intensive sessions the young people will create a full on carnival performance to be performed in the 2015 St Paul's Carnival procession. As further outreach to our project, we will also be doing performances at all of the young peoples' schools as well as a public performance and workshops at a central bristol venue. It is our wish that this project will become a self-sustaining youth music ensemble.
We are confident that the bulk of this project will be funded by Arts Council England to cover expenses such as drums, costumes, transport costs and artists wages, however, to be eligible for funding we need to raise 10% of the funds ourselves. We are aiming to raise £500 as a contribution towards the cost of a rehearsal venue for our young drummers and dancers. In combination with the in-kind support we have already found, we hope this will secure our funding.
Please show your support and help us get this project going!
Risks and challenges
Following feedback from a previous Arts Council application, they told us that to be eligible for this funding we need to raise some external funds to add to the budget. In addition to this, we have already negotiated in-kind support from several large Bristol based arts organisations.
We are very positive that with your help, the funders will view this as a viable project and will provide the funding that this project undoubtedly deserves. However, in the unlikely event that we reach our Kickstarter funding target but the funders are still unable to fund the entire project, we will use the money raised to put on free, open access drumming and dance workshops to disadvantaged young people living in Bristol.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
