Its been a thought camping out deep in the back of my brain for some time now. It has scavenged for resources, fought for territory, and finally gained enough strength to take command and push me to go forward with it... to create a book collecting work from my ongoing 'Portrait' series.
As a screenprinter, I have stacks of paper lying around with giant messes of ink on them. Sometimes they look good, but often they do not. As an artist on a tight budget, I saw the really messy ones as a resource I needed to use. Coating them with some paint and matte medium, I then started drawing with ink and a brush to create the 'Portrait' series. Each one is started with no idea how it will end up, I just start drawing and figure it out as I go. "Working from nothing", as Miles Davis once said.
Working on a surface that is already heavily worked upon has immense appeal to me. Its like the paper is charged with energy, and I'm just putting on the finishing touches. Or strapping a saddle onto a wild horse. You know what I mean, right?
The book will be HARDCOVER & digest size, 6x9 inches, and feature FULL COLOR reproductions of the original 5x7 artworks, all of which will be printed OFFSET, NOT DIGITALLY. It will be 76 pages of experimental, abstract, fun, often strange, and sometimes menacing, Portraits. I'm aiming for a first edition of around 500 books, but the more funding I can get beyond my goal, the larger the first edition can be (and perhaps even more pages). And of course, you like books right? You HAVE to like books, especially ones full of ONLY pretty pictures. If you don't like books, I'm honestly impressed and puzzled you have read this far.
I hope you will support my efforts and spread the word about 'Portraits Volume One'. Cheers!
