The North Shore has some of the most celebrated surf breaks in the world. Heroes are made there, and people die. In December, when the Pipeline Masters are held, and the waves can hit twenty feet, the best professional surfers on the planet are concentrated in a handful of beachfront rentals within a few hundred yards of each other. These houses are the closest thing to an actual backstage that exists on the North Shore. This is where surfing’s elite convene.

But don’t expect to jump off a tour bus with your suntan lotion & fanny pack and get to truly experience the North Shore. This is the birthplace of modern surfing, but much of the real action is off limits to the general public. The North Shore is an extremely tight-knit community that is largely inaccessible to most visitors.

This book is an intimate behind-the-scenes tour of the North Shore shot with remarkable access and from a perspective rarely seen by outsiders. HI 1K features an astounding 1000 candid photos, portraits and interviews shot over the course of 10 seasons. The rich backstories of these moments are illuminated with dozens of detailed and evocative captions. HI 1K is a lush and voyeuristic journey chronicling the private lives and unguarded moments of the larger-than-life characters that make up the surf culture of the North Shore.

                                 Why Kickstarter?

We’re incredibly excited to announce the pre-sale campaign for HI 1K – 10 years, 1000 moments on the North Shore of Hawaii.

The creative team at Indoek have an amazing track record of creating beautifully designed book projects that remain true to the aesthetic and tone of the images and content inside. Last year they produced and designed the critically acclaimed “Surf Shacks” book.

For this project, we’ve spent countless hours curating and editing thousands of photos from 10 years worth of material. We’ve researched paper stocks, sourced an amazing offset printer, and assembled 244 page layouts that bring the saltwater, grit, excitement and splendor of the North Shore to life.

We are passionately committed to creating the most meticulously-designed book and using the highest quality printing methods and materials. This process is not cheap, but this book was too important for us to cut corners, or to concede control by handing it over to an outside publisher. Instead, we opted to produce and fund this book by offering it directly to a community that recognizes the value of this material and trusts our commitment to quality.

This project has been a massive undertaking, but we’re incredible proud of what we’ve put together. Now we just need your support to help us get over the finish line.

"Greyson skated up to the Banzai Skatepark with two Coors tallboys, took a long swig, and then dropped in wearing flip flops. His casual flow and perfect style is mesmerizing to watch. He is the undeniable star of the park. But rather than monopolizing time and taking more runs than others, I actually found myself wanting to see him skate more. Instead, he seemed to relish in the social aspect of the scene. I watched him roam from corner to corner of the park cracking jokes, laughing, and talking to groms and girls like a celebrity working the room of a Hollywood restaurant. After finishing his Coors, he wiped his sun-bleached, overgrown beard, and cracked open another. He stood quizzically, and with his movie star smile he wondered out loud to nobody in particular why more people weren’t drinking beer. It was as if we all were at his private party and he was genuinely concerned that some guests might not be having enough fun. Everybody certainly was."

"I'd been commissioned to shoot the legendary surfer Bruce Irons for an ad campaign. I knew that I wanted to do an underwater portrait, but I felt that it was very important that we had a controlled environment to work in. I decided to shoot it in his pool. Thankfully, the waves were flat on the island that day, so I had Bruce's undivided attention... sort of. We met him at his house and I started by taking some portraits of him around the property. I kept attempting to get him into the pool, but there always seemed to be something that would distract his attention. I eventually got him to put on board shorts and he approached the water. Just as I thought we were finally going to start shooting, Bruce suddenly became obsessed with trying to figure out why his remote-controlled audio system wasn't working. I watched patiently as the sunlight began to fade. I ultimately got him into the water, but I wasn't getting anything spectacular. We came up with the concept of trying to shoot him blowing "vortex bubbles". Neither one of us knew how to go about making them. With wet hands, I frantically attempted to search for some info on my phone. It was approaching late afternoon and we were losing daylight fast. After about 60 seconds, I happened to look over and see Bruce sitting by himself cross-legged at the bottom of the pool nonchalantly blowing a flawless stream of bubbles. I jumped in the pool and began shooting. I had a water-housing, but no mask, so I was virtually blind under water. I estimated the framing of Bruce as best as I could, then I panned the camera and fired multiple shots left to right and up and down hoping to capture the appropriate cropping. After about three or four attempts, we nailed the perfect shot. I got out of the pool and reveled in the epic picture that we had just captured. I asked Bruce how he managed to figure out the bubble technique. He declared mysteriously, "It's simple.... it's how dolphins do it". Bruce later gave me a long cryptic speech about how "...basically, the entire universe is nothing but vortexes."

"Mark Cunningham is a North Shore lifeguard and a pioneer of the sport of bodysurfing. He is a true Hawaiian waterman, and he has a very intimate relationship with the sea. Bodysurfing doesn't involve a lot of equipment - it is wave riding in it's purest form. Before he swam out into the ocean this day, I saw him pause at the water's edge, stare into the horizon, and have a quiet reflective moment. It was just him and the sea. He's witnessed the energy of these waves take human lives. He's also had countless hours of pleasure as a result of their power. As I stood there watching him, his vast respect and love for this insurmountable force was palpable"

"The day was riddled with controversial scores. Kelly Slater and John John Florence both put a on a brave face and gave the obligatory interviews to the hungry press. It was an epic battle that played out like a Shakespearean play. The young prince didn't quite usurp the King, but John John did have the consolation of the Triple Crown trophy and the knowledge that during his matchup against World Champion Mick Fanning, he had masterfully put the Champ in a combo position within minutes of the start of their heat. Kelly Slater earned himself another prestigious Pipe Masters title. They both surfed magnificently that day... but their their awe-inspiring accomplishments were tainted with the bitter irony that Kelly had desperately wanted another world title, and John John had lusted for the elusive Pipe title. Despite their magnificent victories, they both were horribly disappointed. At dusk, I spotted the 11 time World Champ walking solemnly down the bike path. Alone. The number 2 on the back of his jersey resonated poignantly in my mind as I watched Kelly make the 5 minute trek towards his home - sans entourage or fanfare."

The Surfer Poll is the one time of year where the top surfers in the world gather to wear skirts too small and suits too large. But then again, judging surfers on their fashion sensibilities is as pointless as trying to critique Cara Delevingne on her barrel-riding skills. People have designated lanes. The attendees that chose to keep it simple with a modest black dress or a button down shirt with closed toed shoes tended to pull it off best. JJF’s well-tailored blue suit was the exception that proved the rule, while Mason Ho made the sensible choice of a Hawaiian shirt and black pants. Classic look. Although these two Hawaiian locals have very different personalities, they share at least one thing in common. They are both universally revered on the North Shore. John is the humble heir apparent and Mason is the loveable wisecracking prince. Both of them have the upmost respect for their surfing elders and the DNA of the sport. Mason loves to get loose, but he also knows just where to draw the line. Shortly after this picture, he had to politely reign in his right hand man Burger’s rowdy backstage antics. “Just because we won this award, doesn’t mean that they won’t kick us out, Burger!”

"Pipeline is not only one of the most dangerous waves on the planet, it is also one of the most crowded. All of the top rated surfers on the pro-tour as well as a handfull of local wildcards compete in the prestigious Pipe Masters contest every December. Just being a competitor is a huge honor, but being in the Pipe Masters event also provides another invaluable opportunity - the chance to surf this legendary break with only a few other surfers in the lineup. The break is closed to the public during the contest, but the moment after the final heat is completed, the lineup is once again teeming with dozens of surfers. They’re all hoping to beat the odds, snag a precious set wave, and get the ride of their life."

Risks and challenges

Printing high-end photography books is expensive!

In a visual landscape dominated by social media, photography has become diluted and devalued by the constant stream of content delivered to us each day. We however, still believe in the unique power of photography to bridge cultures, convey important narratives, document history, and emotionally affect people.

The pubic has come to expect their content to be free, infinite and delivered effortlessly via digital devices. Our challenge with HI 1K is to convince you to break this cycle and support this project by purchasing a pre-sale copy of HI 1K. By doing do, you will be investing in a unique, tangible and everlasting document of North Shore surf culture that wont simply fade away when you put your phone down. We are confident that the passion, time, energy and talent represented in these pages will shine through wonderfully and make the cost worth the effort. Thank you in advance for support in keeping print media a viable source for beautiful high-end photography.
