AN INFORMAL RESIDENCY (AIRproject):

What's the Story?

My Name is Stefanie Apple (more commonly know as Apple), I came down to New Orleans August 1st for some creative freedom and found so much more.

My new neighborhood
My new neighborhood

The people I've met have not only welcomed me to their community but have also generously guided me, and helped me to connect with others. They've demonstrated genuine love and an even deeper compassion for their neighbors.

There's been a lot of 'warm & fuzzy' moments for me but this was the moment that changed it all for me....

On August 26th, the Social Club Barbershop, led by Charlotte and Oscar M. Gale, brought a fierce team of amazing and selfless volunteers to Central, Louisiana. I was humbled to photograph & be part of the crew that day supplying tons of essentials to locals and making one kick-ass BBQ. This was just one of many efforts the Social Club has made to help victims in this area who’ve lost their homes in the aftermath of this summer’s historic flooding.

In an attempt to further these efforts and get some additional assistance to the people in Baton Rouge and the surrounding areas, I am producing a fundraising exhibition featuring photos of the incredible makers/artists I’ve met in New Orleans. Each artist in the exhibition has donated their time and opened their private studios in support of this benefit to raise funds for flood victims.

The exhibition will be installed in the May Gallery & Residency's upstairs space, which is a raw industrial space, but well suited to the exhibition’s concept of artists in their raw creative spaces.

The exhibit will include a series of my portrait photography of these artists. All the photographs exhibited will be for sale including a special donation from each of the participating artists that will become a part of the silent auction.

Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge Creative Relief
Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge Creative Relief

I have specifically chosen these groups based on the great work each organization has done for their community. The Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge Creative Relief Fund addresses human services issues that directly impact the health and welfare of artists, covers a wide range of personal emergencies, and supports professional recovery, including temporary employment opportunities.

The Baton Rouge Area Foundation
The Baton Rouge Area Foundation

The Baton Rouge Area Foundation employees are visiting each of the shelters, seeing what may be needed and making sure the shelters are able to handle the evacuees. They are assisting companies and state agencies in starting employee assistance funds. and beginning to make grants to nonprofits that are responding to this disaster.

With support from the Baton Rouge Area Foundation and the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge 100% of the net sales & proceeds will be donated to, and distributed by the foundations to ensure that the funds are used appropriately.

The costs to throw such a benefit are high and we’re looking to the public -- i.e. you! -- to help raise the funds for this great cause. We’ve estimated that it’ll take around $5,000 to cover funding pre-production, production costs, and opening reception expenses. Your donations will ensure that I can give 100% of the net proceeds to these amazing organization & the people in need.

Thank you for your support!

Risks and challenges

While the show will go on without your generous financial support, your help will bolster the effort and passion that I'm so happy to provide for this cause. If the fundraising goal is not met, then the show's physical presentation won't reflect the energy, passion, and time, put into the project thus far, i.e.: The framing may not be as professionally done as we'd like, or we won't have the time to ensure that the works are presented with the correct lighting, for example.

I hope that we can not only raise money to support the Baton Rouge area flood victims, but also do so in an honorable and beautiful way, both for the sake of the victims, and the artists in the portraiture that we're selling for the cause!
