MindSeize is a single player 2D Metroidvania game set in a sci-fi universe.
The player explores untamed planets and fights against a mysterious organization, which for unknown reasons is stealing minds of innocent people.
The story is centered around the private investigator M.C. Fox, who is chasing a dangerous criminal organization 'The Ascended' across unexplored planets. The first confrontation between M.C. and the leader of The Ascended severely injured M.C. and left him crippled. They also managed to seize the mind of his daughter. This left only one choice for our protagonist: hire a crew, connect his consciousness into a robotic body called MAG and continue the chase!
- Over 10 hours of playtime in the main story, plus tons of optional content
- Smooth and fast-paced combat and exploration
- Dozens of different abilities, weapons and mods to upgrade your MAG with
- Varied gameplay: take a break to relax at your base ship and chat with the crew
- Original sci-fi world: explore 4 unique planets, each with their own sub-areas and secrets to find
- Deeper story than usual for the genre, written by professional screenwriter
- Beautifully hand-animated 16bit-esque pixel graphics
- Amazing, atmospheric, yet addictive soundtrack and punchy sound effects
We are developing MindSeize for PC and Switch, with other consoles in mind.
The gameplay of MindSeize is varied and divided to 2 different parts: the planet surface and the space ship.
While combat and exploration on the planet surface makes up the majority of the gameplay, some of the time is spent on the space ship, where M.C. is free of his robotic body with a possibility of relaxing a bit and getting to know the crew better.
Most of the time spent on the space ship is voluntary, but required for getting everything out of the story. You can also upgrade your MAG and its weaponry at the workshop, and discover possible side quests by talking to the crew. It's however not required to leave the planet for upgrades or changing weapons - that can be done directly from landing points down on the surface. These landing points also allow fast traveling between any discovered landing point on any visited planet.
Here's a look at how the gameplay on one of the 4 planets could look like:
- Mission briefing at the space ship, conversations with the crew
- Upgrading your equipment at the garage
- Landing to the planet, first contact with it
- Exploration, combat, bossfights - the core gameplay
- Eventual return to the space ship - the story advances
Combat is one of the most important aspects of MindSeize and makes up the core gameplay together with exploration. Thus, we have invested a lot into the combat mechanics. Drawing inspiration from Mega Man X and Zero titles, the core idea was to make the player very mobile and give them multiple possibilities of how to tackle any combat situation. The MAG is always equipped with one ranged and one melee weapon. There are multiple wildly varying weapons to be found in the game worlds. The player can freely mix & match their favorite weapons, provided they acquire them first.
Players can focus on either melee or ranged weaponry if they so choose, but the combat system truly shines when using both in tandem. This 'dual combat system' makes for a very fluid and fun gameplay; players can damage enemies from afar and then come in with melee to finish the job. Having both melee and ranged weapons in player's disposal at all times also means that we can be very creative when it comes to enemy & boss design.
The pair of weapons is complemented with variety of special weapons and abilities, including stuff like EMP, flamethrower, grenade launcher, a support drone and various movement abilities that help in combat as well. These can be found hidden in the nooks and crannies of the planets and some can be crafted by NPCs using scrap, a resource dropped by enemies.
The MAG uses three types of main resources in combat; health, shield and power. Health is self-explanatory and is supported by an additional amount of health called ‘shield’, which basically acts as a regenerating part of health. Power is used by abilities, and doesn't regenerate on it’s own; the batteries of the MAG are recharged by hitting enemies with your weapons and by collecting power packs. Every weapon in the game has its own unique charge ability, a powerful blow or shot that drains power but deals a massive amount of damage.
MindSeize is a story-driven game that takes place in distant future, where transferring human consciousness to mechanical brains and robots is possible. Connecting his mind to a robotic body called MAG (Mind-Action-Gear), the paralyzed protagonist of the story, M.C. Fox, aims to save his daughter Taryn, whose mind was stolen by an organization called The Ascended. This quest takes him to multiple dangerous locations all over the universe, revealing that The Ascended are a much greater threat to the humankind as anyone thought possible.
A mysterious organization believed to be behind multiple incidents, where the consciousness of an seemingly innocent victim has been removed, leaving behind only a body without mind. They believe, that the humankind should take control of their evolution and exchange their biological bodies with mechanical ones. The Ascended are fanatical in their belief, claiming that it would be better for the society to cast aside the old and weak, letting the strong-minded continue evolution with robotic bodies, without illness and fatigue - almost immortal.
The vivid soundscapes of MindSeize are composed by award winning Adam Al-Sawad, who combines both old and new electronic genres to create MindSeizes Soundtrack.
If you tell the world about us, we will tell you more about our world! If the community goals are reached, we will add an in-game log book, where you can read more about the world of MindSeize, its planets and their inhabitants.

M.C. has been investigating the Ascended for a longer time now and has a sizeable registry of people who have become missing. This reward will make sure your name won't be forgotten. Have your name (or a made up name of your choice) appear on the personal computer of M.C. found on your space ship. You can even include a short message, or perhaps a description of 60 characters or less. We reserve the right to reject inappropriate submissions.
Some of the cases M.C. has been investigating are more significant and vital for solving the mystery of the Ascended, with also more information about the missing person. With this reward you will get your name to the in-game computer of M.C. with a longer message of max 180 characters. We will also make a pixel art version of your face and include that as well. Note, that the submitted face needs to be you, or used with permission. We reserve the right to reject inappropriate submissions.
The drone is a loyal companion that can easily get to places unreachable by the bulky MAG. Why wouldn't you want to personalize it? We will invite you to a drone design channel of MindSeize Discord server and you can design a skin for the companion drone, that will be available in the game and can be bought from Ellie using scrap. The pricing of the drone skins will be decided later.
The Ascended admire the beauty of their MAG bodies, which can be quite statuesque. How would it sound like to be able to design your own MAG, that will appear as a statue on the hallway of an Ascended base. You will be invited to the MAG-statue design channel of MindSeize Discord server and get to design such a fabulous statue!
Frederik, a friendly hermit living on planet Verdant Gamma needs a companion. Do you think your dog would be the perfect friend for him? We will draw and animate a sprite based on your dog and have your best friend be part of the game as the companion for Frederik. The dog will have standing, walking, sitting and barking animations and you can also choose how Frederik should call the dog. We will also make sure the dog can be petted: the goodest boys deserve all the pets!
We will take you to our humble office and show you the beautiful town of Kuopio, surrounded by lakes. We will play MindSeize together and listen to your feedback. There will be some surprises for sure, and if you are brave enough, we'll take you to a Finnish sauna!
Travel and accommodation costs are not included.
We have been developing MindSeize as a team for over 1.5 years, half part-time, half full-time. It is very difficult for a young team with no previous success to obtain resources for long-term game development. We have been fortunate enough to have the resources to develop our game so far, but the game still needs to be finished and refined to make it the kind of gaming experience we want. In other words, with our current resources, we would have to release MindSeize as incomplete and unpolished, which we do not want to do. During the development, we've been very happy to notice the substantial amount of people interested in the project and waiting for its completion. We don't want to disappoint those people!
Time is money. Occasionally, we've needed to rely on power of love towards this project to survive and keep the engines running, but that cannot work forever. However, we appreciate all of your love and support, even if it wouldn't be possible to help us financially.
We want to be open and show you how the Kickstarter funds will be spent:

Risks and challenges
We've gathered a fantastic team to work on MindSeize and some of us are basically working on it around the clock, not satisfied with anything less than a great game!
Having published a game before, we know the deal: There's always time lost in squashing bugs and optimization, which are difficult to account for. Crunch is sometimes necessary, but we are able to minimize the amount needed, with realistic timetables and smart planning.
We are very fortunate to have a strong network of fellow game developers, community members and investors that we have been able to rely on. The amount of time and resources already spent on MindSeize is huge and we are confident we can deliver the best possible gaming experience for all of you!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
