"Valiant started as an impossible day dream, brought into a fantastic reality by many amazing, kind, and generous people. We’ve set out to do the impossible with everything we had, to give people something fantastic" - Robin Phillips, Writer / Director
"Valiant is going to be an amazing accomplishment...it already is. All the people we've worked with, the kinds of help we've gotten, all the things we're learning, the world we're building, it's really amazing." - Shyam Sundar Sengupta, Producer
"I have to tell you this is an amazing and ambitious project! This is not just some backyard film. It's well orchestrated adventure with good production value like nothing you've seen before in this genre. Please take a minute to support this project and/or share this link." - Fon Davis [ ILM; Star Wars, Transformers 3, Nightmare Before Christmas ]
"Valiant is truly an incredible project and I couldn't be prouder to be part of the team. With passion, patience and persistence, Valiant is proof of what is now possible with grassroots filmmaking." - Alexander MacLean, Post Production Supervisor
"...may also be the future of fundraising." - Eric Wise, http://www.splicevine.com
Set in a dystopic future, Valiant is an independent steampunk/dieselpunk action–adventure short film. Not just a movie, Valiant is a full original world, a unique cast of characters, and the potential launch of multiple story lines and a trans-media universe.
Valiant follows the Valiant Three - three wanted Air Pirates in a nuclear devastated Europe - who stumble across a mysterious lost child princess that may be the ticket to their freedom.
Originally started as a graduate thesis film and a partnership between USC and Chapman students, Valiant has propelled itself into an independent film of a whole different caliber. Through the incredible amounts of hard work and dedication of hundreds, we're well on our way to create a film and world that looks and feels like a multimillion dollar creation - all for a tiny fraction of that. Our team consists of students & amateurs working hard, learning and accomplishing incredible things, combined with professionals donating their time to make this dream a reality. Many said we couldn't do it, but thanks to the countless hours of time and work by so many talented artists, we're well on our way. However, like any complex artistic work, projects grow and evolve, and now we need you to join our team.
To bring such an original and unique world to life, we originally planned to follow the route of relying mostly on computer graphics and digital animation. But as things progressed and others saw what we were attempting, we realized that this just wasn't good enough. Our goal has always been to pay homage and recreate the feel of the classic adventure films & worlds, such as Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Firefly and more. These films combined classic art forms, such as miniatures, motion control, matte paintings, and more, bringing a wide range of artists together to create these special worlds. We grew up on these films, the opportunity to work with some of the people that made them happen was something too amazing to pass up, and this was the artistic process and art we want to help keep alive.
Valiant is now changing course. Our team has already accomplished so much, we're going to take this film to the next level, bringing the classic together with the new to finish this project the right way. True professional Hollywood artists have come on board, impressed by our work and goals, and this in an awesome opportunity we want to share with our cast, crew, and audiences like you.
Combining classic, but sadly fading techniques like miniatures, motion control, intelligent camera techniques and practical effects with modern artistry like CG and digital animation, our goal is to create an iconic, immersive world, true to it's roots and cutting edge at the same time. They're the artistic methods we grew up watching that are now slowly dying, and we want to show again how well it really does work. But to do this and push our project to this new caliber, we need your help.
We've pitched the project to such Hollywood miniature greats such as Fon Davis (ILM Practical; Star Wars, Transformers 3, Nightmare Before Christmas) and Greg Boettcher (New Deal Studios; Dark Knight Rises, Inception, Serenity, etc) who have kindly come on board, largely donating their time and work to help us realize our vision. We've assembled a team of student, amateur, and professional composition & digital artists, all here to work and learn together. All that's left is you.
Your contributions will go to helping us finish our miniatures, shooting them on the motion control rig we need, additional CG components, composting everything together, and finishing Valiant the way it should be. You'll become part of the adventure, sharing in not only the creation, but the process itself.
Our rewards are meant to bring you into the process, such as the film itself, parts of the creative process and production, lessons in miniature building, airfare and invites to screenings and wrap parties, special thanks credits, and more.
As with the rest of the project, the majority of the work needed is donated to us, but there are base costs we cannot avoid, and for this, we really do need your pledges. The goal we've set is the lowest possible cost we've calculated to finish "Valiant" the way we now could, and if you take us even further over our goal, every penny will go into furthering the creation, perfecting our work, and giving you back the best we possibly can.
Come join us aboard "Valiant"!

Risks and challenges
Valiant has always been a challenge, from the day we took it on as our next project. Creating a universe and story this complex with a budget as minuscule as ours was never supposed to be easy, but has always been part of the adventure itself; so far the results have never failed to impress.
The base of our success so far has been the film's story and the years of diligent work spent creating the world itself. Due to the detail oriented precision of our creative development behind the project, and it's most important part, the story, we've assembled a brilliant diverse team, from highly motivated students and talented independent artists, now to Hollywood professionals willing to invest their own time and assets in us and our project.
Driving this all is our core team of award winning filmmakers, producers, and director. We've all excelled in creating multi-festival worthy films for fractions of what people expected them to cost, and Valiant is the next step. A multi-million dollar looking, true to it's roots creation, for almost nothing: possible and driven by the dedicated passion of its team.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Frankly, we never thought we'd be able to afford the level of miniature work needed to accomplish what we would need to do. But once some of the pro's saw the project, met us, realized what it was all about, and knew what we were thinking about doing, they offered to help us make this a reality for almost nothing. So now, we're going for it! But we still can't do it without your help.
Yes! So far we have planned English, Spanish, French, Hindi, and Bengali. If any donors also request additional languages, we'll make it happen just for you, and we will be adding additional languages as our distribution grows!
Yes! A few donors have offered a few extra bucks to help cover the cost, but this is by no means required. Your support is what matters the most!
Hundreds of people. You supports doesn't just go to a few, but literally the team of hundreds and hundreds of artists who've come together to make something of this caliber come together. Check our updates; we're running a series of posts about others from our crew in there, and although we won't be able to get to everyone, you'll get a taste of the diversity of talent you'll be supporting.
If our Kickstarter succeeds, we will be able to complete the film in the first quarter of 2013! Premieres and distribution to our supporters will go into effect April – May of 2013. Considering the complexity of a project like this, not too bad at all…but we need your help to make it happen!
We've worked really, really hard to get costs down this low, by pitching the project, showing people how cool it really is, and earning their faith. The kind of budget we would need to do all this miniature and VFX work alone at full price would easily go over $150,000-$200,000, but thanks to the passion behind the project, and all the donated time people have offered after seeing how far we've come thus far, we know we can finish it for $13,875 (we ran the numbers before posting the campaign). This money is for base expenses we simply can not avoid. It's still a lot for us to find, so we're asking for your help and support. In the end, you'll have a film and world that looks like it cost ~10 times more than it actually did!
Check our Kickstarter updates, more are posted there.
