My name is Justine Lee Hirten — I am a science illustrator and naturalist living in Fairfield, and you can see my work at justineleehirten.com.
This Kickstarter will fund a mural project at the Connecticut Audubon Center in Fairfield. A team of volunteers has been renovating a space which will be used for kids activities and summer camps and to complete the room's transformation I would like to create a fun, vibrant mural to show kids several examples of the diverse wildlife that can be found in their own backyards and natural spaces around Fairfield County.
My design is inspired by textiles from early 18th century New England with examples from Connecticut in particular. Basically I want to transform the wall into a giant quilt with each block showing pairings of local plants and animals. This composition will highlight the rich natural diversity of this region by allowing me to show everything from horseshoe crabs and ladybugs to chickadees and white-tailed deer all in the same image.
This is a large project, it’s going to require many hours of work and will take up to two months to complete. I will be designing 40 blocks to fill the wall, and in total the mural will contain over 160 plants and animals. Then I will be transferring the images to the wall, applying paint, maintaining a web page for the project documenting our progress (which will be sent out to contributors), and hosting an unveiling event for the project's completion. I am asking for your contributions to fund all these efforts and support me while I devote my time to the artwork.
Your pledge will help create a piece of public art that will be a permanent part of our community and serve as an educational piece for children interested in nature. It will show visitors to the Audubon Center how great Connecticut’s biodiversity is and hopefully inspire them to learn more about the wildlife in our own neighborhood. I hope you will contribute and bring this vision to life!
Currently I am working on a design for a single wall in this space, but if we exceed our fundraising goals I plan on extending the mural to cover more of the wall space and fully transform this room!
A big thank you to Lynn Seippel and Colleen Noyes for making this possible, as well as everyone at the Connecticut Audubon Center — thank you for your welcoming kindness and enthusiasm for this project!
Risks and challenges
I have an absolute deadline of June 1st before summer camps begin in this space, so I am prepared to face all challenges in order to complete the project on schedule. I have a few helpers on board to make this possible. I do have other work projects going on at this time, but this mural is high priority and I have scheduled my time accordingly — your pledge will allow me to devote more time to this project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
