What is this guy talking about? I'm tackling a project that I have been pondering for over a decade. It's a "bucket list" thing. I have had the privilege of being a "sideman" for some amazingly talented songwriters over the last 25 years. Their songs are indelibly etched in my heart, soul and mind. You deserve to hear the collective genius of these beautiful human beings. So I intend to present my take on a collection of these gems - many of which the general public will never have heard before. Some of these have never even been released before.
Who are these people that you speak of? They are for the most part Singer/Songwriters from the New England area (with some notable exceptions). So far the list includes: Judd Fuller (currently touring with Rodney Atkins), Mike Benjamin (legendary Martha's Vineyard artist), Ned Nugent (North Shore musc giant - literally), Brian Alex (of Entrain fame) and numerous other credits, Tony Richards (Brother Jump, K-man Band, New York Chalk), Justin Beech (Two Ton Shoe), John Cruz (multiple Grammy Award winner) and more to be announced. A list with links to their websites and bio's will be posted shortly on the "Sideman Sez" FaceBook page. https://www.facebook.com/sidemansez
Who are you to tell us what to listen to? A fair question - though you sound a bit testy - maybe less caffeine? You can find my Bio on this site (lower right hand corner). I have been a professional musician for years as a multi-instrumentalist/vocalist/producer/engineer with 100+ recordings and thousands of live shows to my credit. I am a multiple Boston Music Award winner and nominee and produced a national Top 10 record on the Americana Music Association charts in 2008 with "Girls Guns and Glory". You can hear a sampling of the Artists I have been working with at http://myspace.com/nitastudio
What exactly will this CD sound like? You are inquisitive aren't you? The challenge with a project like this is to create something coherent and cohesive from widely ranging material. The CD will sound like a strong Singer/Songwriter recording with a killer band backing it up. Styles will range from Rootsy old school R+B to Rock-steadyish to Acoustic Rock. The songs will be very melody oriented. Think: Elvis Costello, Steve Winwood, John Mayer and Marc Cohn
Do you have any "skin in the game"? Yes, and so do a lot of other sweet people - hopefully you will too. I am contributing all the Studio time as well as reworking song arrangements, instrumentation, singing, playing sax and percussion. The performers are donating their time as well. The songwriters are contributing their songs and some are playing on the record as well. All of these donations amount to over $8000 worth of effort. The money you donate will be used for Mixing, Mastering, CD replication and Promotion.
What's you goal for this project? I intend to make a great record you will really enjoy listening to that will promote the careers of the musicians involved. I will be promoting the final product to Radio and the Press. 50% of the profits will go to charity.
