Want to know what Mars Oddity will be like? Check out the prologue to our story here!
After 4 years of successfully terraforming Mars under the M-LISA program, the International Space Agency (ISA) is sending two of his best astronauts, Lupe García and Yun Lao, to join the rest of the team in Mars and gather samples of biological tests and bring them to Earth.
Little they know about the kind of dangerous situation they’re getting into. Only your choices can help bring them safely back home.
Four years after the first team of astronauts landed on Mars, a major breakthrough shakes the grounds of the scientific world: life has been discovered in Mars. Danae, as they call it, it’s a fungus with incredible properties, as it produces oxygen and behaves like a liquid, being able to transform into a yellow-ish fog.
The ISA decides to send a second mission to Mars, where astronauts Yun and Lupe are sent off to gather samples of Danae and bring them back to earth for further study. What Lupe and Yun don’t know is that the team of the M-LISA program haven’t been exactly getting along. This a dark story of introspection, secrets, power and greed but also an ode to friendship and support, arising in the darkest times.
Mars Oddity is an upcoming interactive comic with a choose-your-own-adventure feel about the misadventures of two astronauts in a Martian base and the obscure secret behind their journey.
There are two different narratives, one for each of the main characters and both running in parallel to each other. You will have to make a first decision that will determine the kind of story you are going to read: Do you want to follow Yun or Lupe?
Your choices matter and will determine their future and shape their relationship.
- State of the project -
Creating Mars Oddity has been challenging in every aspect. In the last 9 months we developed a Unity tool for creating digital interactive comics from scratch which we used to the prologue to our story, which can be read here.
The story and its different branches are already planned and written so the money we earn from this kickstarter campaign will be a small economic support to the creators, who are dedicating endless nights and weekends to this project. Starting from November we will be residents at Mediaestruch in Sabadell, a center of Digital Arts, where we will start designing the new panels while we also keep on developing new features for our tool.
We believe in code as the new artistic tool that can transform art. In our particular case, we want to try the limits of the comic book format and translate it to new kinds of canvas, as a tablet or a browser. These are some of the innovative features Mars Oddity can offer:
- Choose your own adventure. Every choice has a consequence and leads to a different side of the story.
- Occasional animated panels contribute to the cinematic experience the comic suggests.
- The reader becomes also a user. The story demands participation from the user to advance.
She's a natural leader and doesn't let herself be easily defeated. She has trust issues but has learned to overcome them with the help of Yun, her best friend, and Collins, her mentor/father figure.
He's a loner, always objective and disciplined in his duties, but also curious and creative. Lupe is his best and trustful friend, they understand each other without saying a word.
He is the commander of the first ever expedition to Mars. He is strict and leads his team with a firm hand, for he has devoted his life to military duty.
Canadian biologist of the first expedition to Mars. She is calm but firm, passionate but sensible. She is a reasonable person and her personality complements the team, as she knows how to weight the pros and cons of any situation.
This Russian guy is all jokes and laughter. A real nerd and geologist of the first expedition. His sense of curiosity has driven him beyond the stratosphere and the depths of the universe. Sometimes he fancies making Collins mad, but that's only because he doesn't like his strictness.

Riesgos y desafíos
The project is in good hands. We are a multidisciplinar team of young enthusiasts very commited to what we do.
We have been residents at StartingLab, an incubator for digital art projects, and will be residents at Mediaestruch starting from november, and that means that we, the Mars Oddity team, don't only have a commitment towards our backers but also with the terms of our residency.Más información sobre el concepto de responsabilidad en Kickstarter
