ABOUT THE PRODUCTION AND OUR GOALS
Life. Death. Loss. Joy. What does it really mean to be human—to be alive? The cells inside all of us are growing, multiplying, dying, and somehow, these cells band together to create everything we’ve ever known. Every person we’ve ever known. Every thing. Our own consciousness. “Living Creatures” is a fascinating exploration of two of the most critical questions human beings have ever posed: what does it mean to be alive, and what happens when we die?
In "Living Creatures", two parents' lives are ripped apart when their 10-year-old son Luke unexpectedly dies from an allergic reaction to shellfish, leaving them alone and overwhelmed by grief. As these parents try to navigate through the surreal world of their grief, Julia, Luke's mother, accidentally stumbles into her son's afterlife— a strange world called "The Other Place" that looks exactly like their home, only different. Stranger. More otherworldly and dreamlike. Julia wants nothing more than to bridge the gap between the world of the living and the strange world of the dead, and will do anything to bring her young son back with her. This surreal fever dream of a play recalls the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, but in a completely new, modern context.
Take a look at our beautiful promo video (directed by Sarah Beth Comfort) to see our fabulous cast of actors, and to get a better idea of what kinds of themes, images, and design elements we'll be working with in this play.
One of the most exciting aspects of our production is that we are able to showcase a wide range of talented USC students from the past, present, and future! Our director, Jonathan Muñoz-Proulx, is a graduate of the USC School of Dramatic Arts' Theatre program, with significant experience working as a professional director in Los Angeles. He has created some of the most stunning student productions that USC has seen in recent history, including the much-lauded Spring 2011 production of "Angels in America". Our playwright, Ashley Rose Wellman, is a current MFA in Dramatic Writing graduate student who has had six plays (four one-acts, one solo performance piece, and one full-length show) produced on the USC campus during her years as an undergraduate. Our cast, featuring Sohina Sidhu, Michael Lyons, Austin Humble, and Caspar Brun are all talented USC undergraduate students, ranging from freshman to seniors, from many different majors and disciplines. Our design team also spans many years and majors, with each team member bringing fresh insight to the show. Our “Living Creatures” team is so excited to showcase the wide range of talent that is cultivated at USC!
Every dollar donated to our production will help us cover the costs associated with mounting a brand new independent student production at USC—renting the theatre, creating the set, purchasing costume, sound, and lighting design equipment, transporting materials, and helping to spread the word about a show that we’re really proud of. We’re not looking to make a profit—we’re just looking to create the best show we can! Because we are creating this show without a grant from the university, we really need YOUR help to make our dream a reality! Remember, if we can't fundraise the full amount we need, we won't get ANYTHING, so we are incredibly thankful for any contributions that can help us achieve our goal. Every dollar counts, and every dollar gets us closer to making this exciting show to share with our community!
Thank you so much for supporting new art, and we can’t wait to show you this world premiere production!
Risks and challenges
With our production of “Living Creatures” we need YOUR help to make this show the best it can be! Without sufficient funding, it will be difficult to make this show the kind of high-quality production that our talented creative team deserves. If we don't achieve our fundraising goals through Kickstarter, we will get NOTHING from the donations, so we really need your help! The show is fast-approaching, and every dollar counts! No matter what, the show will go on, but we need your help to make this a fantastic independent student production with all our design elements fully realized!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
