Embrace, Burning Man 2014 + Generator Phase 2
We built it, we burnt it, we cried. Help us finish funding Embrace & support more giant art outside of Burning Man and around the world
Envisioned in May of 2012, Embrace at the time it felt like a dream. One which seemed so far off for a team of artists and builders from Reno. At that point in time our small team had built a couple small projects and had a bit of success with a little pier we did at Burning Man in 2011 (which is where our name "The Pier Group" originated).
The Pier led to the obvious sequel "Pier 2". Which, unknown to most people, was a practice run for a much larger project. We all together had a belief that we could create a group of regular people that could achieve anything we put our minds to. And in the progress of building La Llarona we learned exactly how true the idea was. For us the success of the second pier made real the dream to pursue Embrace!
In November of 2013 we started building our wildest of ideas, two 7 story people in an embrace. A pair of sculptures, from wood towering over the dessert landscape of Burning Man as a reminder of everyone we have loved and lost. Embrace was a building, a journey through ones relationships, body and mind and ultimately out of ones head and into space. It was an absurd proposition. 100 friends would come together with 140,000 lbs of wood, raise over $220,000 and build a temporary structure on the same scale as the statue of liberty in the middle of one of the harshest deserts in the world for 70,000 people to enjoy over 1 week! The idea was beautiful, stunning and patently ridiculous.
And guess what? We did it!
Embrace was the most amazing thing I have ever done in my life. It started as a dream and has remained a dream the entire time. It was by far the hardest thing I had ever done and I think most of our team agrees. Embrace inspired so many weddings, and engagements, it offered all of us a place to reflect on love and life and relationships. I hope Embrace serves to spark the creation of a new tradition at Burning Man, one of a space dedicated to our relationships in the moment, a celebration of all of the people that have affected our lives.
And then we got to burn it!
I don't think I can properly explain the emotions associated with burning the piece. It was possibly the first time I have felt a new emotion in my adult life, a complex combination of Joy, Loss, Love and Release all bound together pulling at my heart, my mind and my stomach. I heard stories from friends in the crowd of 30,000 people gathered around crying, laughing and smiling as our testimony to love burned to the ground.
And then it was gone,...
The Pier Group worked on Embrace for 2 years. 2 years of blood, sweat and tears. Our team broke bones, healed and rescued lost kittens from inside of embrace (try story). And we are ready to move on to our next project: Generator Phase 2.
Before we can start Generator Phase 2, a 5.5 acre art park and industrial arts center in downtown Reno we need to finish funding Embrace. We successfully raised $180,000 towards our goal of $220,000! This kickstarter is meant to raise about $15,000 of our $40,000 shortfall. We have a huge array of rewards for our kickstarter backers with most of them only available to people like you!
And I will let you in on a little secret,... we are planning to build Embrace again, as a permanent structure in RENO!!!
Risks and challenges
Embrace has come and gone. Its memory is carried through the wind. Our team is exhausted. But we still need to raise $40,000 to finish funding the project. We built Embrace as a gift to our amazing community and we need our amazing community to help us. The Pier Group consists of over 100 artists and it would be great to show all of them that we are not on our own creating art for everyone to enjoy.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
