Buy local! Wear local!
Humboldt County used to be known for the fine wool it produced. Our cool dry summers and mild winters are perfect for growing sheep. The chilly and damp climate also calls for wool as it's insulating properties keep the body warm even when damp.
I'd like to start to rebuild our local wool industry by producing a run of socks from my own wool.
I have been breeding for fineness and color in my sheep and have developed a line of moorit merino cross fleeces that are perfectly suited to be processed into soft and beautiful socks. Moorit is a rare recessive brown color that can range from a soft cream to a deep mahogany.
The minimum run for socks is 30 lbs which will produce approximately 100 pairs of socks in either men's or women's mediums. Other sizes might be available but I need a dozen of each size.
Nylon added at the mill for strength and wear
Men's size 10 - 13
Womens size 9-11
Risks and challenges
Since this is a pilot project I do not know exactly how my wool will perform or the quality of the yarn and knitting the mill will perform .
I sure hope the socks are wonderful..
