Tome of Ideas is part genre encyclopedia, part RPG book, part writing prompt collection, and part inspirational art book. It is designed as a resource for writers looking for their next story, game masters looking for their next adventure, or anyone who simply wants to sit down and send their imagination on a journey into speculative fiction.
The writing prompts, story seeds, and adventure outlines spanning ten genres and almost two dozen sub-genres make Tome of Ideas a great read for anyone who loves genre fiction, art, or roleplaying.
Tome of Ideas is similar in concept to the highly acclaimed Eureka: 501 Adventure Plots to Inspire Game Masters.
A 12 page preview of Tome of Ideas can be downloaded here for free. The formatting isn't final, but it illustrates the kind of content we'll include in the book.
Tome of Ideas features almost two dozen genres and sub-genres from speculative fiction. Take a look at the Table of Contents in the Preview for a better idea of what we'll include.
Each of these writers will have their own pages within the book.
Tome of Ideas will also feature writing prompts from the Atlanta based writing group The COWRDS (Company Of Writers, Really Determined to Succeed):
The guiding policy for the art we'll include is Practicality, Equality, Diversity. This means that we're not interested in characters whose clothing, costume, or armor is ludicrously impractical for the adventure at hand or is hyper-sexualized. We want to showcase art from all genres that features men and women of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds in a variety of adventure settings and locations; men and women who can be admired for their courage, skill, and style, not just their physical attributes.
Tome of Ideas also hopes to feature some of the art from The Prismatic Art Collection, a recent Kickstarter project that we backed and greatly admire.

Not yet. We have to see how much funding we get before we know what kind of website to build. The TOI website will go live when the book is published or before.
Absolutely. Any of the writing prompts, story ideas, or characters depicted in artwork are yours for use, personal or commercial.
TOI is intended for all audiences, but this is ultimately up to the discretion of the readers. The art in TOI will not feature anything sexual, suggestive, gory, or gross, but the book does contain a horror section that may be too scary for very young readers. Likewise, the written content of the book will contain numerous references to intense, dangerous, or frightening situations.
International shipping is considerably more expensive than shipping to the domestic US. The best way to get around this is with a Group Order Reward. This saves us all money.
By commissioning a piece of art, a backer will be able to send us an initial idea for the subject of the piece. We welcome concept art, written descriptions, or pictures for reference. A picture in costume is even better! While we’ll do our best to make sure the backer is happy, the ultimate style, design, and content of a given picture must fit within the vision for the book as a whole. If a backer is completely unsatisfied with a piece, we will only be able to offer a partial refund. For obvious reasons, we will not create a likeness of any copyrighted character. We will also have to resolve conflicts between commissioning backers if too many requests are for similar subject matter (i.e. we don’t want to have ten elf rangers). If you have any questions about commissioning art, please feel free to contact us.
The backer will choose a prompt (or multiple prompts within reason), and then a tone for the piece: humorous, thoughtful, dramatic, or eerie. When the time comes, Michael will draft the piece and email it to the backer for feedback. The backer may then suggest changes and if we can make it all work together, we will. When we post the piece on the Tome of Ideas website, the backer will have a variety of choices for their name to appear with it: commissioned by, co-authored by, with, etc.
