In 2010, Colonizing the Cosmos burst onto the Pittsburgh indie-folk scene with their debut concept album, "The First Frontier". The band quickly gained local accolades for their catchy melodies, dense layers, intelligent writing and odd elusiveness. Well, elusive is what they have been for quite some time now, albeit, for good reason. Bandmates and best friends, Michael Savisky and Josh Moyer, have been hard at work on their greatest creative endeavor yet - a new concept album based upon a fantasy novel authored by the two friends. The result is THE HOUSE OF WAR IS A HOUSE OF PEACE.
Simon Oxley, a thirty-something Londoner, is a world-renowned heart surgeon with a secret: his nine-year-old daughter Abigail is terminally ill and he can do nothing to save her. THE HOUSE OF WAR IS A HOUSE OF PEACE is a novel that follows Simon's journey through an alternate European backdrop where magicians perform on every street corner, elephants own stock, and storks craft elixirs (and the occasional child) for cash. On the night the story opens, Simon accepts an award for Medical Excellence in a ballroom full of supporters. Afterwards, a tall stranger approaches him and promises Abigail's safe recovery – if only Simon will help him destroy the sinister magicians' society, known as the House of War, which just so happens to exist (unbeknownst to everyone) in the levels beneath Simon's hospital. Willing to risk almost anything to save his daughter, Simon accepts the offer, and begins what will ultimately become a harrowing, life-changing adventure through Scotland, England, Austria and India. For the next few months he dons disguises, is pursued and stalked by House men, climbs Ben Nevis (the highest mountain in Europe), is captured by the House of War, and learns of the true scope of the unsettling magic performed there.
The novel (in addition to being a stand-alone achievement all to its own) is paralleled and enhanced by a full-length album recorded by the band, the songs of which explore the story and its characters. The band will release its approximately 300 page novel and 12 track album together in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on November 23, 2013.
We will be using the funds being raised through our Kickstarter Project to help with the cost of production of the album, including, recording, mixing and mastering, as well as the cost of publishing the novel, compensating our illustrator and various costs associated with the release performance in November.
Risks and challenges
Given the scope of this project, the fullness of life, and the desire to make this project the best that it can be, we have taken a lot longer to complete the project then was originally intended. However, we are confident that everything will be completed and ready for the release on November 23, 2013.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
