MADE℠ is a performance board sports manufacturer that has abandoned traditional construction in favor of next-generation additive manufacturing processes. We create hyper-customized performance gear that is an extension of your body - made possible through VOLUME™, our mobile performance analytics tracking application.
A better way to design and build boards.
Currently the gear you buy isn't made for you. It's designed by average - an average of body types and sizes, constructed using toxic chemicals and made in low-wage paying overseas factories, costing you and costing our environment.
Through a revolutionary approach to design and cutting-edge 3D printing technology, MADE has developed a new way to design, create, and manufacture high-performance windsurfing, kitesurfing, surf and paddle SmartBoards™. Historically, this technology has been too expensive to implement for end-use products and parts, MADE takes it beyond cost-effective because our design process:
Our approach combines a performance tracking board design application, embedded SmartBoard chips and additive manufacturing to create hyper-custom sail, kite, paddle, and surf SmartBoards designed for you. We're using technology to simplify the process of finding the right board, while improving the experience of riding and progressing through your sport.
Every time you ride, VOLUME records your performance along with geographic, oceanic, atmospheric and other tracking metrics. The proprietary performance engine tracks the data of other VOLUME carrying riders around you too, using multiple social data feeds of those nearest your level of expertise. This creates a clear model of real time conditions and performance analytics - everyone is a sensor on the surface of the water. Saved to your rider profile, VOLUME is continuously compiling data to keep you riding better, longer, and more often. When you're ready for a new board, the compiled data is used to custom design it.
Without buying a thing. Ever.
Even if you don't own a MADE SmartBoard you'll still have access to VOLUME, the gold standard in performance tracking for all board sports, via the app. Learn more, progress faster, get better.
MADE boards are for everyone
Choosing the right board can be an overwhelming experience for all of us, but especially, a first time buyer. We've simplified equipment choice through VOLUME. Getting the right board is easy and with the ability to compare your expertise level to other riders, you'll soon understand what you need and why. There's no guess work in choosing a MADE SmartBoard, just the board you need, the board made for you. Having fun on the water shouldn't be difficult, VOLUME will help you design the perfect board, whatever your level of expertise.
Combing biometric, environmental and performance data to create the perfect hyper-custom board is made possible through VOLUME. The real magic comes from connecting the NFC (near-field communication) chip on your board, to the web, other boards and other riders.
By bringing the personalization and aggregate data of the web to your SmartBoard, we can make it a more useful and fulfilling product. Your SmartBoard will share relevant information with you, other riders, and our preference engine to create the perfect board and provide a wealth of performance data to help you ride better.
The MADE experience, from our proprietary design process to manufacturing to shipping, is different. Every step of the way, MADE is striving to radically reduce the impact on our environment at all levels of manufacturing and design, including you as an active participant and inviting you into our local studios as we grow.
From the inside out
Our prototypes are constructed with an internal bridge made from ABSm-30, a high-strength and dynamic thermoplastic. This radically reduces weight, while creating a resilient and durable internal architecture. We know this works because it is how wings have been constructed for the last century.
Strength and stiffness come from the bamboo underlayment and fiberglass shell. We're currently using low VOC and low toxicity bio-resisn and produce outstanding results with a mixed-material approach resulting in a stiff, lightweight board. The prototype you see in the videos is 250cm in length by 90cm in width at a total weight of 13 pounds - much lighter than comparable boards on the market.
Every aspect of your SmartBoard is customizable. VOLUME does the heavy lifting and ensures that you have exactly what you need - but we let you take one step further. You can fine tune, change, or modify any of the recommended board attributes, creating boards for any body, any style and any level of expertise.
The First Ride
Stepping in the first time you'll notice how well-matched the board is to you - designed to your exact height, weight, and style, appropriately created for the conditions in which you most frequently ride. MADE's process ensures that:
Additive manufacturing is transforming commercial, sustainable, and economic processes. Cultivating sustainable manufacturing processes to ensure a healthy and prosperous world is critical - we all know it. Additive manufacturing means near-zero waste, no wasted inventory, and no artificial factors to influence cost. It is the future. It's what our planet, our economy and our sport need and this is your chance to take part.
President Barack Obama acted to launch the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute (NAMII) to further U.S. capabilities in an important emerging manufacturing technology. The success of projects like this will contribute to the success of the United States and its standing among the world's technology and innovation communities in a critical and emerging field.
Less waste. Less complexity. Less cost. Our materials are not tied to the oil markets, our materials are not wasted nor wasteful. MADE is more than a board sports company, it is an ideology, a belief that we can create the future that we've all been promised - a future that represents something deeper than just more of the same, a future that radically changes our lives for the better and leaves the shattered remains of the status quo on the worn pages of history. MADE is your chance to be an influential and critical actor in creating that future.
MADE believes in the local shop, we want it to thrive. Our lives are governed by community - not far off manufacturers that control supply and cost. The local shop has suffered from increasingly complex products and exponentially rising costs. MADE's direct to consumer model allows sales through madeboards.com - but more importantly MADE SmartBoards will be sold at local shops without the shop owner ever having to take stock. They'll be provided a demo board free of charge so you can feel the quality of the build first-hand and work with the shop and our customization app to create the perfect board for you. The shop takes a nice percentage of the sale and never takes inventory. Smarter for you. Smarter for business. Boards made smarter℠.
Our studios won't be centralized, they will be localized. We will build small, high-efficiency outposts run by local experts, creating and manufacturing boards, accessories, and pretty much anything else you can imagine, right next door. Clean, non-polluting, sustainable studios located wherever there is demand. This radically reduces the reliance upon logistics - lowering fuel consumption and shipping costs and improving every community that houses a MADE studio. We look forward to a future where boards that are ordered through MADE are picked up within days of being submitted, made in your community and strengthening local economies.
MADE represents a better, smarter way to create high-performance hyper-custom sail, kite, surf, and paddle boards and more - but at its heart it is a commitment to innovation and sustainability. Our future depends on the actions of today. We're asking for your financial support in order to fund the acquisition of the Fortus 900mc production platform, requisite materials and the further development of MADE SmartBoards. Our passion will never waver and your contribution will be used with the greatest care. Fund our future, change your world.
We are producing a limited number of hyper-custom, data-driven MADE SmartBoards. For our first round of production we're producing sail, kite and paddle SmartBoards. As we grow we'll be adding surf boards and extending customization into color selection and other personalization choices.
We will watch demand closely and create new incentive tiers based on demand. We want to make sure that anyone who wants a board can purchase one.
The apparel and bags that we will be providing are purchased in partnership through Malaika Linens and Ayadi. The proceeds will provide an economic benefit to women and artisans while amplifying your financial contribution. MADE is committed to social responsibility at every level, we believe business can be used for good.
We understand the value and importance of keeping good company, from the United States Windsurfing Association to Stratasys Ltd. We wouldn't be where we are today if it weren't for some very important and visionary people who believe in what we're doing.
Stratasys is a supportive benefactor and friend of our nascent organization. As the leading manufacturer of 3D printers and production systems for rapid prototyping and manufacturing applications, their visionary work is creating the future.
