Our initiative, called Teach Design Austin, educates local high school students on the methodologies of design through immersive, real-world programs that result in positive design mentoring experiences and a lasting impact on the school and community.
Our current program is with the McCallum High School Fine Arts Academy in Austin, Texas. The students participating in the program are designing and building a series of circular, outdoor seating structures with interactive lighting displays. We need funds to finance equipment and material construction costs.
We started in Sept 2009 by guiding the students through a Design Research phase, and then moved into Concepting and Prototyping. Final design selection was made through a juried process, resulting in a final concept known as “Bubbles.”
The “Bubbles” concept consists of up to three circular perches, or benches, that light up when people approach them. These will be located in a courtyard near the new McCallum Fine Arts Theater. The benches will serve as a much-needed resting spot during the day and as an interactive seating area before evening performances.
The funds raised through Kickstarter will be used to purchase lumber, concrete, LED strands, an Arduino Printed Circuit Board, Sonar proximity sensors, waterproof enclosures, electrical wire, and other miscellaneous electrical supplies. Labor is donated by McCallum High School students, SHW Group, Flintco and frog design.
We hope to complete the first seating area during the Fall 2010 semester.
