About

Big Heavy World in Burlington, Vermont is a volunteer-run organization that does everything humanly possible to support the musicians of Vermont. It's toally inclusive, and mostly teenagers and college-aged volunteers are the crew. The ongoing projects include a record label that puts out compilation CDs of different themes; a public listening library of Vermont-made music that has betwen 3,000 and 4,000 titles; an online music shop with more than 600 CDs by Vermont artists for sale, a community radio station called 'The Radiator' (licensed LPFM), and special projects like the free, all-ages music conference called 'IndieCon' during November and the 'Vermont Jukebox Project' that puts digitized Vermont-made music into the state's welcome centers on the freeways and the airport to get more exposure for Vermont's music. Everything we do for Vermont bands and musicians is free because we pull resources together from the community, sponsors, and grants and the staff is volunteer.

We're tyring to raise money to upgrade our server, which is about 8 years old - we have lots of historic local concert audio to post and with community partners are starting to create video interviews of bands and musicians, and we're installing computers into downtown venues to stream concert live on our radio station and through the web site. We need to upgrade the server, a first generation Apple Xserve, to be able to handle all this new content. We received a grant from the state and support from Small Dog Electronics http://www.smalldog.com for part of the cost but still need to raise $1,000 to make up the difference of the $2500K cost of the server and upgraded hard drives.

The more we can accomplish to get the word out about Vermont's original music, the more the world will get a chance to enjoy it, and with the new server we'd be able to involve more people in more ways in both hearing VT music and helping get the word out!

An 'In Silver Light: Music of Vermont' CD - a collection of Vermont singer-songwriters and instrumental tracks that's especially atmospheric and gorgeous. Among the adults we call it the "red wine and bubble bath" CD. It's a good one. See http://vmls.org/program-insilverlight.php

Last summer we released a 2-CD set of music found in Vermont over the last 400 years - from the pre-European-contact indigenous Abenaki to Phish, it's a mind-blowing historic experience. See http://vmls.org/program-timelinecd.php"http://vmls.org/program-timelinecd.php

We built a community radio station called 'The Radiator' with our partner, Lee Anderson, proprietor of Radio Bean, Burlington VT's most eclectic live music venue. The station broadcasts everything from hard core punk rock to jazz - hear it at http://www.theradiator.org or in the radio section of iTunes, "eclectic" category. Magic Hat, one of our local microbreweries, gave us pint glasses that have our Radiator and their logo on them - we're down to one crate, so as long as they last we'll have them for anyone who contributes $100 or more.
