Everyone and everything has a story. We're so very passionate about each of our products. Where the raw material comes from and how it's produced matters and now... we need your help finalising a project which has become our incessant obsession! After 18 months of developing, improving and refining, we believe that our unique, hand-shaped New Zealand wine-barrel longboards are ready to reach the World.
We are Indigo & Wills, a New Zealand raised and creatively driven pair who are super passionate about hand-crafted, ethical and sustainable art goods. We both began life among small trees – Indigo in the North of Scotland on a tree nursery, Wills on a cherry farm in Marlborough, NZ. It is safe to say we both had plentiful childhoods filled with tree-climbing, vegetable gardens, chickens and mud. It is from these modest roots that we developed our love for nature, community, everything organic and environmentally sustainable.
We are super lucky to have been able to house-sit and live at home to save money over the last few years to do what we want with our lives and our career. We are also privileged to have an innovative and fore-running wine industry on our doorstep as well as the ability to forge relationships with local wineries. Namely, our favourite organic and biodynamic winery, Seresin Estate which is where we source our wine-soaked French oak.
After months of working in the Packing Shed of the Rowe Family Cherry Farm (now being sold), we are ready to take this product into a more commercially viable arena. We've invested everything - a substantial amount of money, time, heart and soul - in this Project. We need to put a roof over our business' head and invest so as to take this time, sweat and tears intensive process into something we can make an actual living from.
WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP:
Although we have travelled through the normal routes of business loans and personal investment, this project needs a little extra kick(start).
* We are forced to move on from our current (borrowed) workspace due to the sale of the Rowe family business so we need funds to find ourselves a new space in which to create. We need money to rent a space to keep up with the demand that our new product will hopefully open up. This "Kickstarted" rent should cover us for a few months so we can get ourselves established and into full production mode.
*As these boards are time intensive to say the least, we need to invest in some serious tools to help us with the job. We need to purchase better sanders, a CNC router and a large extractor unit as well as footing the bill for electrical needs of the machinery.
Essentially, your help will enable us to make our passion into a sustainable business- environmentally AND financially - & we would really love that. Of course, we'll give you something back...
We are full-bodied in our dedication to making a high-quality, recycled and useable product and in helping bringing art / hand-craft into an accessible environment. We love the process and the link to our region's biggest commodity, wine. We just need a helping hand, at this point, to get it off the ground and to have a space in which to create!
Thank you so much, from the bottom of our hearts, for your contributions towards our dream!
SUBTITLES: “There are over 100 Wineries in Marlborough, New Zealand. Here, is a region renowned for the crafting of world-class Sauvignon Blanc. Amidst these vines, there is a remaining cherry orchard, on which there began a craft all it's own.
Officially founded in early 2013, The Paper Rain Project specialises in organic/fair trade artist apparel, custom skateboard art & longboards made from recycled wine-barrels. Aiming for high quality, creative products that were as sustainable as possible, we (Wills Rowe & Indigo Greenlaw) set about creating a unique style of wine-barrel board. Partnering with organic, biodynamic wine-makers at Seresin Estate, The Paper Rain Project use wine-soaked aged-oak barrels in a lengthy process to create a longboard with a beautiful body & a great ride.
The barrels are unravelled, staves steam straightened, paired & joined, shaped, sanded, illustrated, laser-etched, hand-finished with Tung oil & often paint or gold-leaf ”
“We absolutely love doing what we do. Although there are days we work from waking til bed, & months where we can't really afford rent, this is our passion. We want to keep creating great products from renewable or recycled materials that can make sustainability & craft a factor of every day life.”
To date, we've sold around 100 wine-barrels boards to wine-makers, experienced & new longboarders, art collectors & a whole range of people around NZ, Australia, Germany, USA, Switzerland, France & Sweden. In order to keep doing this, we need to invest in some more tools to speed up the process & a roof over our business. We're currently living & working full time out of my parents' sheds & it's about time we moved on! We need to make our business sustainable as well.
As a company which began with custom painted skateboards, we're really lucky to have had the opportunity in the last year, to also collaborate with some incredible international artists in exhibiting our wine-barrel boards across the country. These include FLOX, Cinzah, Faunesque, Sneaky Studios, Laura Alice, Mica Still, Emmaline Bailey & more. We love seeing our wine-barrel boards become an oak-canvas for a huge range of styles. Afterall, longboarding has always been a little bit about expressing yourself.
Our pledgers will receive a range of our fair trade, hand-crafted & art-based products. If you want to see a part of wine-history cruising down the street, more recyling, product develop & good old-fashioned hand-craft, please hop on board & support our cause! We're sure you'll love them too.”
Risks and challenges
We like to stick to the word CHALLENGES as this is what we face in our business. The risk is that this Kickstarter may not work, in which case we'll be disappointed but will have learned along the way (and we'll most certainly try again.)
CHALLENGES: As with any hand-made product, without extensive heavy testing through practical use, it's impossible to know the extent of the durability of a product. Although we, and many others, have ridden our boards over the past 18 months, it is possible that there could still be a design flaw that needs ironed out. If so, we intend to strengthen the already very durable oak, with stainless steel supports around the truck mounts. If ever a design flaw, we will address any needs as best we can.
If there happens to be an overwhelming amount of demand for our products as a result of this Kickstarter campaign, it might mean delays with production and delivery. Thankfully, an overwhelming demand would enable us to acquire the equipment we need to produce a quantitive number of boards and secure a workshop. None-the-less, if we need to get additional helping hands on board in order to do this, we will do so.
Another issue that may occur is that we may not find an entirely suitable workspace fast enough to complete a huge amount of work before the shipping dates. In this case, we may potentially have to lease two smaller places. Fortunately for us, we have family who have been very generous with there space for the next few months.
In the case of any challenges, we will knuckle down and work through them, the same way we have addressed challenges in our business so far.
We endeavour to maintain clear and transparent communication with each of our pledgers on the topics of progress, timing and fulfilment. We love you guys and we absolutely realise we can't do this without you!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
