About this project
Neon Shakespeare is a collection of 154 original sonnets written in response to each of Shakespeare's sonnets. Inspired by the likes of Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet, Neon Shakespeare puts a contemporary spin on the timeless themes found in Shakespeare's Sonnets.
My sonnets are more than a mere metric miming of Shakespeare. In the tradition of the answer-poem, each of my sonnets is a thematic variation on its Shakespearean counterpart. The call-response dynamic between Shakespeare's motifs and mine animates the collection.
For a little extra fun, I've sprinkled a few "easter eggs" throughout the sonnets--like a sonnet that rhymes with the digits of pi, or reads the same backward and forward, or rearranges Shakespeare's words into a new sonnet. Although these experimental gems are rare in the collection, they add to its uniqueness.
My background in philosophy, linguistics, liberal arts, and slam poetry flavors this collection throughout. My sonnets are language reflecting on language, and are rife with philosophical and literary allusions. They have been called strange, subconscious, and hypnotic.
I'm turning to you, my Kickstarter friends, because I'd like to see the sonnets published. I've intentionally kept the goal amount low to help ensure that the project succeeds. The bulk of the pledge goal amount will be applied toward copyright, ISBN, and publication costs. Remaining pledges may help cover the costs of copy editing, cover art, design, layout, review copies, marketing, promotion, and distribution.
Everyone who contributes, regardless of amount, will have the option to have their names included on a special Acknowledgements page in the Limited Edition Kickstarter printing of Neon Shakespeare.
