About this project
Update: Thanks to everyone who pledged and supported CLICKEYbits! We will be posting updates here and on clickeybits.com as we figure out our next steps.
Why This Fidget Device?
Yeah, they are all the rage these days. Ask someone who has a six-sided fidget toy what their favorite side is. They will probably tell you they like buttons the most, and people generally use only one or two sides.
CLICKEYbits focuses on what fidgeters want the most and does that one thing right. It has great feeling buttons because it is the same quality switches you get on high-end mechanical keyboards.
Play Your Way
So many ways to click, fidget, and crush
Rolling gives you a stream of clicks
So many patterns - hardcore fidgeters find new ways to entertain the brain
And a musical fidgeter's favorite - clicking to the beat of a song stuck in your head. Its far more satisfying than tapping on a desk
Three Models to Choose From
The Classic features three pairs of the most popular keys - two blue keys that click, two red smooth keys, and two keys where you can feel a "bump" in the middle.
Mechanical keyboards just feel great, especially when compared to the keyboards that come with most desktops and laptops. The Internet can tell you all about a mechanical keyboards' features, but you really need to feel it. Unfortunately, you can't go to your local electronics store and try out a bunch of mechanical keyboards; they typically aren't on display or aren't carried in the retail space at all. And you want to get it right - a good mechanical keyboard isn't cheap!
CLICKEYbits Tester gives you the key switch tester you need to make an informed decision. Each Tester has six different switches representing the types of switches found in most mechanical keyboards. You will have a good idea what the keys in the keyboard will feel like when it arrives. And once you've learned what kind of keyboard switches are right for you, CLICKEYbits makes a great fidget desk toy.
It's the clickiest click that ever clicked.
The Kickstarter edition is made with all green switches and buttons in a black shell. It has a most satisfying feel and click every time you touch it. It is a favorite among true fidgeters.
The Kickstarter edition will only be available during the Kickstarter campaign.
My son and I are mechanical keyboard enthusiasts. We envisioned a mechanical keyboard switch tester as a cube or sphere, with six different switches for the six sides. With the arrival of our 3D printer, we were able to turn our design into reality.
But when we handed the prototype to people most said "Oh, it's a fidget thing". They aren't wrong - it's a fun and fidgety desktop toy! Listening to user input, we've refocused CLICKEYbits as both a fidget toy and a great keyboard switch tester.
Like the classic SNL skit from 1976 - "It's a floor wax and a dessert topping!"
Everyone participating in kickstarting our project is an early bird and a hero to us. After the campaign, CLICKEYbits will retail for $29.
We will send you a survey after the campaign to choose which CLICKEYbits you want.
CLICKEYbits is designed and manufactured in Pennsylvania.
Thank you for pledging!
Risks and challenges
We take risk very seriously and actively work to identify and mitigate risks.
The critical path driver is the tooling for the plastic mold injection and the ultrasonic welding. (This is also by far the largest startup expense, and the reason we are on Kickstarter). If the vendor has issues with the setup, it could impact the timeline. If we determine there are quality issues with the custom parts it could require re-working the tooling. Monitoring the tooling process and custom part production is a top priority.
Besides the custom elements, there are parts and and materials required for manufacture and packaging from various vendors. Relying on vendors represents some level of risk, primarily to the timeline. Our project plan calls for ordering all materials as soon as the campaign’s funds are released. Since the critical path is the custom manufactured parts, we will have time to work with vendors or change specific vendors if needed.
We have ample experience in production and shipping. We expect there will be many day-to-day challenges along the way, but this is well within our wheelhouse.
