About

The Ghastling was born out of my love of ghost stories and tales of the macabre; loosely based on the Victorian 'Penny Dreadful' and a love of vintage design and typography. Please take a look at previous magazines here: http://issuu.com/theghastling

Magazines
Magazines

I wanted to create a magazine that reflected its core right down to the last detail - so-much-so it even has its own 'Ghastling' font. The magazine oozes eeriness and dark things. Dark things in every form. I don't set limits on creativity - I love the daring. Here, a unique place for modern 'Gothic' and 'macabre' has been created away from the clichéd, tired formats that are currently out there. I have discovered that there is a large audience who feel the same way: they love the genre but feel it is lacking in high quality representation too.

Currently I have no funding at all so rely entirely on Amazon's Createspace for a print-on-demand service. The magazine is also available to view for free on issuu, which has been fine so far in raising the profile and visibility of this new magazine, but now that we have the audience and due to the exceptional design quality and caliber of writers and illustrators, I believe it is time the magazine is fully paid for. The reason for this: It is my goal as editor to be able to independently produce print copies for distribution AND to be able to pay contributors something for their fine work. Since the magazine's inception this has been my goal. I believe in the value of the arts and the importance of paying people for the work that they do.

Begun in 2014, interest in the magazine has snowballed with attention from the likes of the BBC (Radio 3 Verb programme) with Ian McMillan tweeting about it from his office in Salford! The magazine aims to be biannual, publishing in both print and digital format. I have also held a launch party for each magazine, the third one will be celebrated on Halloween - all of these events have been hugely popular and it has been great to meet our 'Ghastlings' in the flesh!

With myself, the editor, based in Cardiff, UK, and the art director, Nathaniel, based in Quebec, Canada, we pride ourselves on being an international community of creators, writers and artists. If you choose to pledge - however much you wish to give - you will be supporting a collective, not just an individual but a collective which is striving to continue to produce a unique and beautiful magazine of quality - such that cannot be found anywhere else. A collective that hopes to continue to spotlight the many talents of the seasoned, new and emerging writers, artists and creators; to build and enhance the careers of everyone involved through their shared love of the ghoulishly strange and macabre.

We have some lovely rewards for pledges. Here is an example of some:

Risks and challenges

The fact that this is my first ever go at Crowdfunding is a risk and a challenge. Over the last couple of months I have had to learn to trust myself and take the plunge - who ever got anywhere by sitting still and playing safe?!

I am concerned that I will not be able to fulfill the pledges on time due to the Christmas post! That there will be printing and manufacturing delays, it will snow, the printer will break down. etc, etc!

I am also a natural worrier which does sometimes put me at an advantage in that I am super-prepared for pitfalls and problems along the way, but a disadvantage in that I will be having many sleepless nights over this! Because of my publishing experience, I am well equipped in finding solutions to problems I may face and have a good understanding of the nature of publishing.

But I guess my main concern is what will happen to my magazine if the Kickstarter campaign doesn't work as I don't have the financial means to fund this project in the way that I want to by myself. The regularity of the magazine's production will depend entirely on whether or not I can save enough money from my day-job to pay for it (this has been the current situation), which means the frequency of the magazine will be compromised. And ultimately, so will its existence. That makes me sad because no one else is doing anything quite like this!
