New Game Art: Giving Shape to Strange Visions

Greetings Fellow Dreamers of our Glorious Fall!

As you know, true art can only come from suffering (lot's of hard work is a plus though). We've decided to make this update all about the new art assets of Stygian that we developed after the success of our campaign. For better or worse, you're responsible for them! Take credit dear cultist.

As you can see we're altering our characters to fit better with our vision of a more classically stylized game world.

And here you can see our new approach to character animations. We've changed our animation software, we're now working full time with more animation artists and we're extremely excited about what's to come!

On the downside, we often find ourselves doing crazy looking body movements and gestures to express our characters to animators. We warn you, don't make your best deep one moves in a glass office partition. People look...

No texturing, test coloring.

Speaking of the deep ones, let's check the evolution of our interpretation of the iconic creature. As you can see, the gills took most of the time!

Basic Lighting Tests in Riverside

Without darkness, there can be no light. On second thought,  forget about the light. It's boring and almost non-existent in Stygian.

We're working on a light engine for dark areas such as catacombs and crypts. Get ready to enter some combat scenarios holding your pistol on one hand and your good old lantern on the other!

Honest Bill's Pawn Shop
Honest Bill's Pawn Shop

There can not be an art update without a glimpse of our backgrounds, right? Just don't ask about the fate of Honest Bill, we prefer not to talk about it...

And we'd like to conclude our update with a character portrait. Since we're working on his dialogues these days, let us introduce you the owner of Schmidt's Antiques, Isidore Schmidt. He has a thing for keys...

Thanks for your support and interest!

Wonderful work so far, but I think Mob Fist looks a bit strange. His right shoulder (closer to us) is too low, so when he walks it seems like either he has a hunch or a broken back. Other models seem fine.
May the stars be in your favor.

Everything is looking so good! I eagerly await the demo/beta for backers. I cant wait to start playing Stygian.

The new lighting system is just so cool! I can't wait to see the different ways it's going to be implemented to add a creepy atmosphere.

Team Cultic, you guys are awesome! I look forward to the next update, keep up the stunning work!

Until we meet beyond the wall of sleep, take care and keep strong.

Love the art, love the animation! Can't wait to see more.

Looking great! Loving how easy on the eyes the lighting is, nothing overblown for no reason, looks very comfortable to play but also foreboding in tone.

      @ Sterling
Thanks Sterling! For the player characters we haven't worked on adjustable skin colors and different complexions yet. We're much more focused on the gameplay experience and narration right now. But I can easily say that we have African Americans, Abenaki Indians and other characters from varied racial and cultural backgrounds in Stygian. Thank you for your considerate approach by the way.

Love the work you've done so far. I am curious.. are any characters planned to be of the .. colored persuasion? I'd like to have options to choose, or to also see people of color as I explore and interact in the game. So far it's been pretty mono-chromatic.. heh Or since this is built on Lovecraft's vision, is it also following his racialist views as well (for accuracy)?

With the animation work you're doing you are tackling one of the few problems I had with the presentation during the Kickstarter. I see that things are coming along nicely.
Let's hope the things will creep from the sea soon, conquering the planet, eating the innocent and MATING WITH THE WICKED TO CREATE THE ONLY WORTHY FUTURE FOR THE WEAK, THE DREADFULLY WEAK HUMAN RACE!
