We are starting up a local magazine The Ramsgate Recorder in November 2018.

We launched another local magazine called The Margate Mercury in 2016. The magazine has gone from strength to strength, increasing in size from 16 to 64 pages and becoming a much-loved publication for the town (testimonials can be read on the website here)

You should back our project if:

1) You love Ramsgate and want to read interesting, well-written stories about the town's people, businesses and places.

2) You love magazines and print.

3) You want to inspire and support the Ramsgate community.

4) You want to be associated with a hyperlocal publication in one of Kent's most-loved areas.

The Ramsgate Recorder will be printed on 54gsm newsprint. The magazine will be published quarterly (four times a year) and will be free so the whole community can read it. We will print 7,000 copies which will be distributed in Thanet, Kent, and also London. The first winter issue will be published on 1 November. Further issues will be published in Spring (1 February), Summer (1 May) and Autumn (1 August).

Like our sister magazine The Margate Mercury, The Ramsgate Recorder will include an events calendar for the season (The Hotlist), a round-up of openings and news, as well as interesting articles and features about the local area and its people.  There will be a strong focus on design and lots of great photography.

Why us?

The Margate Mercury has had a hugely positive impact on the Margate community since launching over two years ago.

Here are a few things we are proud to have achieved:

- We have promoted and supported the work of local writers, photographers, illustrators, poets and artists via the magazine's content (all commissions have been paid since issue one).

- Many local charities and social enterprises have gained new volunteers or help via the 'Give Something Back to Margate' section and articles in each issue.

- We have featured many community heroes, artists and personalities and helped them gain the recognition they deserve. For instance, we featured the RNLI on the cover of our spring 2018 issue, as well as an interview with Aram Rawf, an asylum seeker turned celebrated volunteer.

- We have included fascinating stories about Margate's history, including the town's waves of immigration, formidable women who have lived in Thanet, the evolution of the Thanet Press building, the 'Blessing of the Seas' ceremony, the history of the Walpole bay tidal pool and more.

- We raised £450 for local animal rescue TAG Pet Rescue at our autumn 2018 issue launch party.

- Founder Clare has been interviewed about the Margate Mercury for the radio stations Monocle 24 and Academy FM and for a film about Demon Dayz festival by Red Bull.

We know we have the skills and experience to launch a brilliant sister magazine for Ramsgate which will have a positive impact on the town.

What our readers say

Here are a few unsolicited testimonials we have received about the Margate Mercury via our email and social media:

Iris Johnston (Margate Central Ward Councillor): "May I congratulate you on an excellent and positive view of the Town and to bringing together all that try so hard to make it a wonderful place to be."

Jenni Borg: “Margate Mercury is a really great local paper.”

Adam Tinnion: “Clare and the rest of the Margate Mercury team have put together a fantastic community paper and we urge you to all go find a copy.”

Carol Titmus: “I look forward to reading each edition they make Margate come alive and show what a wonderful vibrant and creative place it is to live.”

Lauren Alonso: “We love the Margate Mercury!”

Kate Coleman: “I’m always itching for the next issue…it’s always worth the wait. Can’t wait to pick up a copy!”

What is the money for?

We want the Ramsgate Recorder to be well-designed and feature great stories and content. In order to do this we need a minimum of £2,500 to pay for an Editor, Designer, Sub Editor and to cover the printing, contributor and distribution costs.

If we raise more than this amount then we will re-invest the money in to future issues of the magazine, thus helping it to grow. We will then rely purely on advertising revenue to keep producing the magazine.

Why Kickstarter?

We want the Ramsgate Recorder to be an independent, community-led publication like the Margate Mercury. We have chosen Kickstarter to raise money for it as we want the community to back it and for it to be an independent publication.

What will it look like?

The magazine will have the same look and feel as The Margate Mercury. All issues of The Margate Mercury can be read online here. It will be the same size and will be printed on 54gsm paper. The first issue will be 16 pages. We hope to increase the number of pages with each issue like we did for The Margate Mercury.

The pages will be well-designed with great content and images. We will commission only local writers, illustrators and photographers for the content.

The schedule

If we reach our crowdfunding target then we aim to launch the first issue on 1 November 2018. We are currently finding great content and stories for our first issue. We will commission local writers and photographers for these stories and start designing the first issue in mid-October. The magazine will then be printed and in November we will distribute 7,000 copies in Thanet, Kent and also London.

All issues of the Margate Mercury can be read online here https://issuu.com/margatemercury. The Ramsgate Recorder will also be available for people to read online.

For any questions or story ideas for our launch issue please email us on ramsgaterecorder@gmail.com. You can also visit our website or follow us via Instagram.

Risks and challenges

There is no risk as we believe that there is a strong demand for a publication like this and we have the team, skills and experience to produce it. If we don’t reach our target then we will try and secure more advertising to cover the costs of the first issue, or get a loan, but we would much rather do it with your support!
