The first Sidewinder was written and filmed and edited in 1 week. Anyone can tell you that that was insane. We filmed on a Canon 7D, sound with a Zoom H4N and had hurried special effects and not original music.
Sidewinder, the captain of a small spaceship, arrives at the end of a 4 year pursuit of a man on which he seeks vengeance. However, he finds himself separated from his dearest companion. Taken in by two outlaws, he convinces them to aid him in his search. Leading a two-way search into a recently prosperous town, he finds the true nature of it's prosperity. On the fence of a dual morality, he must make a choice.
-------------------------SIDEWINDER: ECSTASY OF GOLD--------------------------
Sidewinder finds himself stranded on another planet. Desperate for funds, he stumbles on a treasure map, not knowing a local gunslinger, Carson, is looking for same, looking for a way to free his sister from the slave trade. When Sidewinder and Carson cross paths, Nicholai is captured and Jill and Bear taken hostage. Sidewinder has to trust himself and his crew to save Nicholai, end the slave trade, rescue themselves, and ultimately, find the treasure before Carson does.
WHAT WE HAVE DONE:
We have cast and crew and props and costumes and set and equipment. We have fight choreographers, makeup specialists and drivers. We have over 50 people in various roles from Director to Screaming Girl Extra. We have even been filming and editing. The first portion of the film is in the process of editing this summer. We have a composer and computers to edit with and programs for special effects.
WHAT WE LACK:
We still have about a third of the movie left to film. We need to edit the whole film, score it, and add the special effects, such as gun smoke and blood. Post production will be intense, given we have only a couple of people who can help and one computer to do it all on.
WHY ARE WE FUNDRAISING NOW?
When we started this project, it was all out of pocket costs. What is a couple hundred bucks, right? Well to college students, that's a month's rent, groceries or some new tires. Moreover, the movie was demanding props, costumes, set and travel expenses and we were suddenly not a couple hundred dollars out of pocket, but couple thousand.
NOTE: Since we'll be entering the film into contests, we cannot send the digital copies or DVDs until after we submit our film to the festival. Everything else will be as written.
There are a couple of things we will be spending the money we raise on:
- Entry Fees for Film Contests
- Hiring Musicians for our Composer
- Rewards for all You Lovely People
- Funds for Travel, Prop and Makeup Costs
- Compensation for our Actors
- Feeding our Extras
UPDATE: STRETCH GOALS
If we raise $5,000, then we're going to print T-shirts. Backers past $25 will get them (mainly the shipping costs and what). We will also make them available to our campus and Sherman/Dallas area to buy.
If we raise more than $5000, then we will buy new sound equipment. We have been borrowing from our school Austin College, but the equipment is old and the quality control means we have a lot of extra takes that use up our time and resources.
OUR PLAN OF ATTACK:
If we raise the money, we plan to finish filming in August and then spend the next semester in post production. With the first portion of the film already done, it should be something we can finish by Christmas.
First off, we are media and theatre majors at Austin College. When we get this done and submitted to contests, we can put our work here on resumes that could get a jobs later on. Our actors will have footage to show agents. Our camera crew can show directors. Our fight choreographer can show his work to clients. This is the beginning of our careers and it starts here, with finishing this film.
Secondly, it's a bit of homage to Firefly. We all loved that show, and even if it's not around anymore, we can tip our hats to its wonderfulness with our quirky crew and a Russian cyborg.
