Thank you for taking the time to learn about the FLOTE™.
"If the pundits are right, and the touch-screen tablet is the future of computing, then we’ll have to come to terms with the Handling Issue: unlike with a laptop or desktop computer, you have to hold a tablet with your hand as you’re using it." - David Pogue, NY TIMES
"But the iPad is much heavier than the Kindle and most people will need two hands to use it." - Walt Mossberg, WSJ
"Even at 1.5 pounds, the iPad feels heavy to hold." - Matt Brewer, MAC FANATIC
57% of iPAD / 61% of eReader owners read in bed - NIELSEN
"It's (iPAD) too heavy. It is. Just admit it." - Henry Blodget, CEO The Business Insider/ HUFF POST TECH

After too many nights experiencing tingling fingers and pains in my neck and shoulders, I decided that I wanted to create something new that would hold my tablet for me as I browsed, read, or watched a movie– particularly while I was on a couch, chair, or even better– my bed. It had to be cool looking so it didn't detract from the experience, and it had to be simple and hassle-free to adjust.
This was my inspiration for the FLOTE.
SO WHAT IS THE FLOTE™?
The FLOTE is a machined-metal floor stand designed to securely hold a wide variety of tablets like the iPAD® or e-readers like the Kindle® in virtually any position so you can use them hands-free for prolonged periods of time.
Not only does it hold it where you put it, but the patent-pending FLOTE is also simple to adjust without the hassle of tightening or loosening any knobs or screws each time you move something. You simply put the tablet where you want it, and it stays there until you move it.
The FLOTE's clean, sophisticated design compliments most interiors while truly enhancing your tablet or e-reader experience. It's built by U.S. craftspeople, and is made of machined metals that will withstand years of regular use.
(Note to Nook® owners that a case is required to use it with the FLOTE.)
HOW THE FUNDS WILL BE USED.
It took us several months of working and testing with designers, engineers and fabricators to be ready the FLOTE for release. But before we step up to manufacturing, I need to prove that there is true market demand. Your support will do just that, and funds will be used to get required tooling and refine manufacturing processes.
REWARDS. FOR KICKSTARTER CONTRIBUTORS ONLY.
The engraved, stainless steel Official FLOTE Kickstarter Commemorative Plate is for Kickstarter contributors only. The plate goes on top of the Base Cylinder during assembly after you receive your FLOTE. (Speaking of which, assembly of the FLOTE is very simple, taking only a few minutes to accomplish.)
Below is the design that will appear on either the t-shirt or hoody sweatshirt rewards:
The chart below was created to, well, chart out the various reward options.
Thank you again for considering the FLOTE and possibly making a pledge to help make it a real product. Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.
MORE THANK YOUs.
I also want to thank a number of great people who were extremely generous and kind with their time, guidance, advice and friendship. Most of these people helped me get to this point without any request for, or guarantee of, some type of compensation. They did so because they believe in me, the FLOTE, and in creating innovative products that will help our economy grow once again. To each of you, my sincere and heartfelt thank you.

© 2011 Dave Cutler/DCS CONCEPTS. Dave Cutler/DCS CONCEPTS reserves all rights to the FLOTE™ name and logo. The FLOTE™ design is U.S. Patent-Pending. Design subject to change. Sorry, for shipments outside the U.S. are either not available or only under certain circumstances. Please contact us directly for more info.
The patent-pending FLOTE uses a tested and proven ball joint assembly made out of machined metal. There are no bolts, knobs or retaining clips to tighten or loosen. These parts often fail over time. Also, they can be difficult to use, especially for those with weak hands like the very old or very young. With FLOTE however, the user simply repositions their device "on the fly" with no hassles.
Over time, a user may notice that their cradled device may slowly slide down. This is simply an indication that the metal ball needs to be wiped clean using a paper towel or other clean, soft cloth. This wipes the film of dirt and grease which can develop over time. Once clean, the FLOTE works perfectly once again.
That's the beauty of FLOTE's design. A user can easily and fluidly reposition the cradled device exactly where they want without the hassle to tighten or loosen knobs, bolts or retaining clips. This makes using FLOTE perfect for those with weaker hands like the elderly or the very young (who also have a hard time holding their devices for a long time anyway).
When I type on my tablet, does FLOTE stay in its position or swing away? Is there a lot of bouncing?
The FLOTE was really designed for viewing web/TV/movies and reading, which require just occasional tapping, typing or "pecking" of the iPad. While FLOTE is designed to keep the tablet in its current position when you type on the screen, there will be a slight bounce reaction as seen in the video.
This is barely noticeable when you are occasionally typing in a URL or turning a page. For more concentrated or prolonged typing, the FLOTE will stay in position, but there will a more noticeable bounce due to the repetitive tapping.
However, a solution I have found is to gently hold a lower corner of the iPad with one hand while you type with the other hand. This makes the iPad very stable and the bounce becomes virtually unnoticeable.
So, if you intend to do a lot of two-handed typing on the iPad while it is in the FLOTE, the bounce may bother you. If you can use one hand to enter text (as I do) I believe you'll be fine. Either way though, the iPad will stay in the position that you put it in.
First, the $245 includes $45 for shipping via UPS. (FLOTE weighs 25 lbs and requires a larger packaging.) So the actual cost is $200. That said, we could have designed the FLOTE to be less expensive by using cheaper parts or a less sophisticated design, but I knew that the quality and its durability and functionality would have suffered. I believe that here are enough cheaper products on the market, and wanted to offer something I was truly proud of.
Aside from some small Teflon® parts, FLOTE is made of machined metals. It's rock-solid, beautiful to look at and beautiful to use. I intentionally made form and function a priority, believing that there is a market out there of people (like me) who desire a an elegant product that would make use of their iPad, tablet or e-reader more enjoyable–and healthier.
Yes. I have already worked on a desktop base, a wall mount- even a tripod adapter. A user simply removes the Cradle (the part that holds the device) using a quick-release design, and quickly connects it to either of these mounts. These accessories will be available as quickly as possible once we go into production, and we will offer our original KS contributors special discounts.
However for our launch at Kickstarter, I wanted to offer something truly unique, and the FLOTE is absolutely that. As most iPad/ tablet users know, there is already a plethora of desktop stands out there (but ever try reading a book or watching a movie on a desktop? It's like reading at an old library- not very comfortable or ergonomic).
Due to the weight of the FLOTE (25 lbs) and size of required packaging, shipping internationally via UPS or FEDEX is expensive- $300 and up. However shipping via USPS is about $100 but will take 4-6 weeks. If you'd like the FLOTE shipped internationally and can wait that long, please add $50 to your pledge and indicate that you are an international order. If you are in a hurry and need your FLOTE sooner, please contact me directly for UPS/FEDEX shipping quote.
