About

Aegis Division is a six degrees of freedom first person space shooter with class based four player cooperative modes.  Think Elite or Descent in terms of 6 degrees of freedom flight control. Player classes are based on the following roles:

Repair: Repairing and reviving your allies to keep them in battle is the skill set of this class.

Assault: Being at the frontline protecting your team and objectives.

Technician: Using strategic placement of turrets and machinery to defend your allies and objectives.

Scout: Stealth, speed and agility are the focus for this class, big damage in a speedy but fragile package.

Each of the above roles has unique skills that aide others in certain scenarios and all are capable of defending themselves. This enables you and your team to choose any class setup, for example; all choose the technician class and defend yourselves with remote turrets, or perhaps scout and have a good old fashioned dogfight.  While it is not required to have one of each class in a coop game it would be recommended that each choose a different class to cover the variety of situations you will encounter.

With this in mind; objective defence and survival are the main focus of the game.  Solo play, deathmatch modes and other player versus player objective modes such as capture the <item> or king of the hill are likely to be included but cooperative survival play is the main aim.

It is worth mentioning that Aegis Division can be played with a mouse and keyboard, or an xbox controller.

I am currently using the Unreal Development Kit for the gaming engine, Blender for 3d modelling, Gimp for texturing and artwork.  Hopefully if Kickstarter funding is successful I will be using Adobe Flash for scaleform in game menus and displays, and Propellerheads Reason for audio.  Ideally better 3D modelling tools such as Maya or 3ds max would be used but these are beyond my budget.

After four months of development it is currently in an early alpha state, flight controls and a large chunk of core code is working and testable.  To summarise; you can fly around and shoot things with other players, but game modes, assets and core mechanics are still under construction.

As mentioned previously, Aegis Division is in an early alpha state and content is very likely to change.  Below is a few examples of in game assets which demonstrate the art direction I want to follow:

More viewable content will be added during development at Facebook and Twitter.

I intend on releasing this game on the PC platform with solo and multiplayer options including several environments to play in,  further maps and game modes can be added at a later date free of charge.  I have never liked the idea of paying for further content after buying a game, so with that in mind future content updates of the game will be free.  Steam Greenlight and digital download will be the method of distribution.

I was hoping to be able to introduce the possibility of a Mac version as the developer kit supports it but not owning a Mac is the hurdle at this point, stretch goal funding will be introduced later and its success will help contribute towards this.  Last on the to do list would be to integrate Oculus Rift, although to be honest I'm not sure virtual reality would add to the game.

My name is Chris Martin and I am an independent game developer and amateur musician, I have been programming for around 17 years and writing music in various genres for 20 years.  I've grown impatient waiting for the type of game I want to play and have decided to make it myself with the hope that others share the same view,  after all there's not much point in playing a cooperative game by yourself.  I have been working on Aegis Division full time since January 2013 and have got to a point where the project requires funding.

Depending on the success of Kickstarter funding, the plan is to expand the core team and in turn productivity will increase which means a better game overall.  Although the end goal will help me pay for software licensing, music, writing, sound design, hardware and hosting, it will primarily be used create the huge amount of art, code and assets that this ambitious game demands.  The target figure is the absolute minimum this project requires to proceed.

I'd love to hear from you, please ask anything you like in the comments section of this Kickstarter.

Alternatively Aegis Division can be found on Facebook and Twitter.

Additionally you can view a few prototype screenshots at photobucket and there's a few sound clips available on Soundcloud too, please keep in mind that this is prototype content and it is likely some of it will be dropped from the game entirely.

As mentioned in the previous section, Aegis Division can be found on Facebook and Twitter.  General updates will also be made throughout the duration of this kickstarter project.

Risks and challenges

With Aegis Division the goal is to provide a fun, feature full, polished and professional end product. For a team currently consisting of one person this is quite ambitious. Although I cannot foresee any issues, it is possible that the unexpected can occur and as with any project this would result in a delayed release.

The intention is to keep project backers up to date with progress via facebook and twitter. As always any feedback is greatly appreciated and is always taken into account, the player's opinion counts!
