In Fall of 2012 we will launch an inaugural public art exhibition to be conducted in conjunction with the popular Feast of San Gennaro.

VIA DEL POPOLO ǀ San Gennaro NYC ǀ 2012

Help launch an innovative new art exhibition in NYC’s Little Italy!

VIA DEL POPOLO ǀ San Gennaro NYC ǀ 2012 reimagines one block of Mulberry Street as a public piazza and art exhibition in the heart of the historic Basilica of St. Patrick's Old Cathedral campus.

For ten days in September (September 13-23, 2012), during the traditional Feast of San Gennaro, life-size photographic portraits of a cross section of St. Patrick's parishioners: families, couples, and individuals, all vividly captured through the lens of photographer Alex Arbuckle, will enliven the ancient brick walls of the churchyard. Custom designed and fabricated lighting sculptures based on the Basilica's gothic arches will illuminate the artwork and the piazza.

Translated "the street of the people" and/or the "way of the people", it is the intent of VIA DEL POPOLO ǀ San Gennaro NYC ǀ 2012 to bring the concept of the local street festival back to its roots, and gift the annual celebration a shared, free, public art space to inform festival attendees about local traditions, past and present.

In concept, VIA DEL POPOLO will feature three distinctive aspects:

Project Aspect #1:  The Wall - Portraits

A public photo exhibit will be mounted on the exterior walls of the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral, illustrating the unique diversity of neighborhood residents and church parishioners.  The photographs will be life size, formal and engaging portraits of the Church’s parishioners as families, couples, and individuals, shot by photographer Alex Arbuckle.

The images will be mounted on waterproof fabric and hung over the wall to avoid damage.

Project Aspect #2:  The Wall - Illuminations

As a needed method of highlighting the artwork during evening hours and a general enhancement of the streetscape, eighteen spectacular 15’ high outdoor LED streetlamps will be installed.

With a creative team led by lighting designer Maha Mamish, these arches are designed to surround and highlight the Basilica’s iconic wall while illuminating the photo exhibition.

By combining historic references with progressive LED energy efficient lighting technology, the illuminations are a further symbol of the ‘past meets future’ concept of the project.

Project Aspect #3: A Modern Piazza For The People

During the festival dates, the adjacent streets will be transformed into a contemporary piazza and outdoor lounge, with umbrellas and outdoor furnishings. This public space will serve as a modern agora, where the community will mingle in leisure and strengthen its ties.
