About

Hey folks. How do I pitch this? I guess I can start with a little bit about myself. I've been doing webcomics since the end of 2003. Back then I started a little webcomic I called Yosh! (because I was a total weeb).  Now here we are, 15 years later… and I’m still doing 3 Yosh! comics every week.  There are over 2000 comics on Yosh! Problem is, Yosh!, while fun, isn't the only idea running around in my head waiting for when I feel skilled enough to take on a bigger challenge. There's a bunch of projects I want to do. Almost 3 years ago, I started working on one of those other ideas. That comic series is called Artificial Incident.

Artificial Incident is a project I fell in love with as soon as I figured out that it already had a known Genre. Yosh! fell into the "Slice of life" category even though very little of it fell into everyday life, but because there really wasn't a better fit for it, it was categorized as that. AI, on the other hand, was RPG Literature, or for the weebs, an Isekai (Yep, 15 years later, still a weeb).

Allow me to explain my passion, or skip this paragraph. I love stories that take a person and throws them into a familiar yet alien world.  Stories like The Wizard of Oz, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, and yes, even Captain N the Game Masters (Actually I was more a fan of the Dungeons and Dragons animated series but anyways). I enjoyed these stories because I saw so much potential and a simple connection. Most people can put themselves in the shoes of the person thrust into this strange situation. They can think about what they would do and how they would react. This creates an instant connection to the protagonist of the story. Then there's the shear number of familiar yet different things you can do leading to near limitless potential, while not being so alien that people have trouble understanding it. It's a perfect storm of unique and familiar attributes.

So, what Is Artificial Incident? It's the story of a character that not only gets pulled into a video game, but has the memories of that character as if they actually lived their life within the game. This caused many of the character's original memories to be overwritten, but not all of them. They're not alone in this game though. The story focuses on the main characters and the mysteries that unfold from the world. This includes everything from the NPCs, to a massive change in the economy and civilizations of the world, to even other Player Characters... from entirely different games.

What makes AI different from other similar stories? This comic has many unique traits, but the thing that frustrates me the most about many current similar stories is their lack of actually showing why things are the way they are. So many mysteries and concepts are never explored. AI is written to explore these changes and work to discover the reasons behind them rather than just accepting things "just because".

Finally, why should you help fund this project? Well simply if any of this interests you at all, you should take the chance to back this project. If you still aren't sure if it's your kind of story, the website has the entire comic available for everyone to read right now. Check it out here from the beginning (note: a few of the pages are being edited and replaced for the printed version) and if you like it, please consider supporting me either by backing this, or joining my Patreon. Both is cool too though. If you cannot afford to but wish to help in some way, please signal boost this in a respectable way.

FAQ (If you have any questions feel free to email me at sage25@gmail.com or message me via Kickstarter)

  •  What Size is the book? The book is designed to be a standard Trade Paperback which is 6.625x10.25 inches in the US (around 17cm x 26cm). There is no manga sized version planned.
  •  Is the book a soft cover or hard cover? The book is a soft cover much like most traditional Trade Paperback comics.  Hard covers significantly increase shipping prices outside of the US and are much more expensive to produce. I would love to do an "upgrade" to hard covers but the goal is not taking hard covers costs in mind. Please read the "What Kind of Stretch Goals are Planned?" for more on hard covers.
  •  What Kind of Stretch Goals are Planned? Currently there are no plans to do stretch goals. My goal is to have the books printed and most of my work is focused on getting all the pages ready and sorted as well as re-edited to look for any errors. I am even redrawing a few things. That said, if the project is going well I would be interested in something small like bookmarks for a small goal. It's something I could easily add without messing with Shipping prices (note, the current estimated weight puts the book and packing material close to the max allowed for First Class international. Increasing this weight by a few ounces could result in the shipping going up by 10 dollars or more so I am trying to avoid it if possible). If the project does very well though, I would love to be able to do a hard cover of the book. This would be a problem for shipping outside of the US as stated before but the stretch goal for something like this would have to be closer to 22,000USD to account for everything from shipping to the books. The only way I can see reducing that number would be to cut the original book and do a full replacement with Hardcovers. Still that is significantly more costly.
  •  Why are you charging 10 dollars for your signature? It's not really about the signature, it's just another incentive to try and get people to donate more than the value of the book to get things going. That said, I don't think my signature is worth anything but the time it takes for me to write it. To sign 220 books takes a significant amount of time and the repetitive nature of it can be harmful to my hand. Since my only job is being an artist and writer, I very much wish to keep my hand of course. If I take my time I can sign any number of books without issue. A few a day, 20 or so a week, over the course of a few months, that would not be an issue. However these do have a due date and to stick by it I needed to limit it to a reasonable number. Same with the sketches. The sketches I can slowly start to work on after the campaign is complete but I have to wait for the books to be printed to start signing, and it can take months for them to arrive.
  •  You ran out of the sketch reward tier! I was hoping to get that! I'm glad the sketch reward tier is as popular as it has been. I am considering adding another but pushing the Estimated Delivery Date back by a month or two. Keep an eye out. If it remains popular and people are OK with waiting I might keep adding a month or two later versions of it as it really does help push the Kickstarter. I'm not a fan of having people wait longer and longer but I'll have to make that clear that it's the issue with having personalized work done for each pledge.
  •  I would like to order more than one book, how do I do this? I current don't have a great way to do this but for now, after you pledge for one of the books send me a message requesting more books. For US orders this is relatively simple as the shipping cost doesn't change all that much. However for people outside of the US the price change is greater. Here is the breakdown on shipping cost changes for buying one extra book.
  • If you are in the US, +31USD to your pledge that already includes a book as a reward will cover the extra book and the shipping.
  • For Canada add +38USD to your current pledge that already includes a book as a reward for one extra book and shipping.
  • For anywhere else in the world add +43USD to your pledge that already includes a book as a reward to cover the shipping and extra book.

Once that's done I will add a note on your pledge that you are to receive multiple books. Make sure you message me confirming this after your pledge change as proof of the request so that I have something to reference when setting up my shipping.

  • I ordered a book but it's going to take a while to be shipped, can I also get the Digital version with my order? Yes, anyone who orders a book will also be able to get the digital version of the comic as well. I feel this is fair especially for those who are going to have to wait even longer for their book to include time to draw the personalized sketches. I will provide links or another method of downloading the PDF for everyone who chose the Digital Comic or higher tier reward.

PrintNinja will be the printing service used for the book. I've had a lot of friends recommend their service in the past for their own books and I'm looking forward to working with them.

*Note on Shipping Costs*

Shipping within the US can mostly be covered by Media mail. However there is no such inexpensive option for Canada and other countries outside of the US. If the estimated weight remains as expected 25USD for most countries is correct. For most overseas it is 23.50-24USD Plus the costs of shipping materials.  Canada used to be around 15, however in January the USPS went up on their rates as well (and even made costs in the US go up with Media mail being exempt). So this is my full disclosure on shipping, hope it cleared up any questions you had. If not feel free to message me or email me at sage25@gmail.com.

Risks and challenges

I believe this is a low risk challenge. The work is mostly already done, it's just a matter of funding and time. I am hoping to have the books ordered and in stock before July 1st, but it can take a while to print and ship. Expedient shipping is possible, but extremely expensive. So long as the goal is met, shipping things out is the biggest challenge once the order comes in since I would mostly be handling them all personally and alone. Perhaps I can sucker- I mean get aid from my local friends or family.

    Signed Book. . . With a Sketch?!

A signed copy of the book, and a 8.5x5 piece of card stock... With a sketch on it! The pages should be glossy so sketching actually in the book would be kinda weird. Also if I mess up I can't just rip a page out of the book! Or... Can I? No, no I cannot.
