About this project
What the press is saying about the eTeleporter
Introducing the eTeleporter – the most natural and effective way to communicate when you can’t be face to face. By removing the barriers traditionally associated with tablet-based video chat, the eTeleporter will quickly become your new, must-have communications device. This patented precision instrument ensures a simple, seamless user experience, and it works with any video chat software or application that offers full-screen viewing on the iPad. This includes, but is not limited to, Apple's FaceTime, Microsoft's Skype and Google's Hangout.
Industry experts say that this is the decade of video. And while people log more than one billion minutes per month on video chat, that figure still represents less than one percent of the total amount of voice minutes logged around the world every month.
So why isn’t video communication as ubiquitous as voice? Because current video chat options like Skype and FaceTime leave users feeling awkward, uncomfortable and ineffective. It’s like being lost in translation.
Only 7% of a message is conveyed through someone’s words, while 55% is communicated through facial expression and 38% through vocal intonation. With its patented design that ensures eye contact, high-fidelity audio and flattering lighting, the eTeleporter is the next generation of electronic communication.
Quite simply, the eTeleporter from Prompt Video will transform your video chat experience and, finally, make video chat as natural and effective as talking on the phone. Whether you’re looking for a way to connect more often and more meaningfully with family and friends or you're a small business looking to drive sales with online video, we want your support.
"Anyway, Skype doesn't really work because the camera is above the image. If I'm looking into the camera, which makes me look kind of normal, I can't see you. But if I look at you, I look like I'm not looking at you. It's just a mind-f#%k." Judd Apatow on FastCompany
What Problems is the eTeleporter solving?
Problem 1: Lack of hands-free, ergonomic experience
Solution 1: The eTeleporter provides a hands-free experience by holding your iPad (iPad2, 3 and 4) at a stable position. Also, the eTeleporter was designed so the iPad can be placed in and taken out very easily in just seconds.
Finally, the eTeleporter can be tilted back and forth so you can adjust it to your personal viewing angle
Problem 2: Microphone and Speaker not optimized for video chat
Do your video chats remind you of a distorted drive-through conversation at a fast food restaurant? That’s because your voice is captured through a small microphone at the top of your iPad, which means you would need to speak into the top of your iPad for optimal voice capture.
Additionally, the speaker is also located on the back of the iPad, propagating the sound away from you instead of towards you.
Solution 2: The eTeleporter creates a funnel that exponentially extends the iPad’s microphone range forward and out to better capture your voice and improve its clarity.
In addition, the eTeleporter speaker chamber also redirects sound waves from the back of your iPad so that you hear the other person more clearly.
Problem 3: Excessive glare from the iPad's glass screen disturbs the visual experience
Solution 3: The eTeleporter protects your tablet’s surface from distracting glare and light pollution, thus creating a beautiful and crisp image for you to see on the screen.
This built-in light filter means that you and those you video chat with look better. The eTeleporter puts you in a more flattering light, literally.
Problem 4: Lack of eye contact or gaze distraction
A traditional proverb says that the eyes are the window of the soul. It turns out that the eyes – and our ability to make eye contact with one another – are also essential to effective communication.
Solution 4: The eTeleporter’s ergonomic, hands-free design and patented optical lens system makes it easy for users to maintain stability and eye contact throughout their video chat. The result? Increased comfort, confidence and credibility, which translates into more quality time spent with family, friends and colleagues. Finally, FaceTime feels like face-to-face time.
Bonus Proprietary Prompt Video® Software
In addition to our video chat solution, we have developed an iPad Software Application that when combined with the eTeleporter, transforms your iPad into a portable professional video production studio.
Our Prompt Video application also has the power to transform your iPad into a go-anywhere, easy-to-use teleprompter. Now you can create engaging, customized videos for your family or business right on your iPad and email or upload them to your social networks in minutes.
How did we get to this final design?
The eTeleporter team invested the last two years in Research and Development in Optical Sciences, Human Factors and Product Design:
Optical Sciences Research and Development: The eTeleporter team had to work with many different variables and constraints in the optical system design icluding -but not limited to- the optical image size, the optical elements sizes, the image degradation, image phantoming and image aberration among others
May options and iterations had to be considered before the team was satisfied with the final optical system lenses prescriptions to make sure the image observed by the user is clear and beautiful
Note: We have changed the hard numbers of our analysis (Our secret sauce) for variable letters (x,y,z) to protect our intellectual property and design trade secrets
Human Factors Research & Development: The eTeleporter team invested hundred of hours observing how users conducted video chats on their iPads and making sure the product adapted seamlessly and intuitively to that interaction. Among other variables our team had to work with the iPad physical dimensions, iPad facetime webcam specs, and average population ergonomic demographics among others
Product Design Research and Development: The eTeleporter team has invested over 8 man-months of research on the mechanical, material and engineering/manufacturing aspects of the eTeleporter final design.
Risks and challenges
As a team, we have more than 50 years of combined product development experience, which gives us a great ability to mitigate and predict our risks. We've created multiple prototypes of our eTeleporter and are very confident that the one you see today is THE ONE. We already have a manufacturing partner that has evaluated the product's optical engineering and mechanical engineering specs and is ready to start manufacturing as soon as we give the word.
While there is no such a thing as a risk-free project, we feel our multiple years of preparation, our current manufacturing partner capabilities and our team's experience gives us a great set of assets to overcome any potential risks in this project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We will build an inset piece that could be attached to our capsule and compensate for any change in dimensions
In the current version -because the optical design is very sensitive to the iPad front cam FoV, Focal Distance, iPad screen polarization and other ray trace factors- we only support iPads. In the future we plan to support the iPad mini, iPhones and other Android based tablets.
We do support all current iPads with a front facing camera (iPad2, iPad3 and New iPad)
Yes, you can actually insert the Apple charger (both versions) on the capsule and charge the iPad while you use the eTeleporter
The price may be considered a bit high by some pople, are there any other products in the market that provide the same benefit?
We are not aware of any other products in the market that provide the same benefit. Since we own two patents for this technology, please let us know if you see another similar product that may be infringing on our patent. While we understand somebody could deem this product doesn't warrant its price, we would like to give you a few datapoints to capture its value:
1. According to the national association of vision care plans (www.navcp.org) the average price of optical prescription lenses in 2012 was $263.00. The fact is that high quality optical lenses are not exactly inexpensive items. We have been able to bring down our cost due to our manufactuing techniques and the volume of lenses we are hoping to procure for our product
2. According to the Airlines for America organization (www.airlines.org) the average price of a US domestic ticket in 2012 was $355.75. If our eTeleporter technology allows you to save the time and money of taking a plane, the product will pay itself amost three times in just the first trip saved
3. If you have friends and family that you don't have a chance to visit in person very often, and our eTeleporter provides you the experience that makes you feel like you are truly connecting and engaging with them while still at your home. How much does that cost? We would argue that it is actually priceless!
