What is a **peak flow meter**? Just as diabetics check their blood sugar levels with a monitoring device, asthmatics can keep an eye on their lung function with a peak flow meter. The device measures how much air an asthmatic can force out of his/her airways, which is an objective indicator of the state of a person's asthma.
The Smart Peak Flow device is genius (at least we like to think so!) because of its size, simplicity and technology. It has no batteries, and only one moving part: a little propeller that rotates as you blow.
The small device clicks into the audio jack of any smartphone and works seamlessly with a free app - available for iOS and Android.
Available for both iPhones and Android phones, the app will Remind, Measure, Chart and Share your peak flow data.
The biggest challenge with asthma control is how to stick with it day in, day out. To help you stick with the program and keep on top of your condition the Smart Peak Flow app will introduce a bit of fun and give you challenges and rewards.
Can staying on top of your asthma be fun?
We think so! Our app is not all business, it has a fun side too.
After each blow, it will give you little rewards, set challenges, keep track of your personal best and winning streaks and award you virtual badges.
It's not a game you could play for hours, just a little fun to make the task of controlling your asthma less of a bore. And only if you choose to do so. If you're not into this kind of thing, it can all be switched off.
Our 90-day challenge
Asthma is a lifelong condition, so to stay on top you need to form new behaviours.
Research has shown that on average it takes 66 days or more to form a new habit. For this reason, we have a 90-day challenge for you.
If you use Smart Peak Flow every day for 90 days, you will receive a gift from us: your exclusive copy of our next big thing - the inhaler monitor. The inhaler monitor is a little cap you place over your reliever inhaler that records when the inhaler is used and transmits that information to your phone. The Smart Peak Flow app will then display this information along with your peak flow values.
Many asthma sufferers tend to overuse their reliever inhalers, so it is another important thing to keep track of. But you've got better things in your life than counting inhaler use, so we are developing our inhaler monitor to solve this.
Your peak flow readings and reliever use information taken together will help avoid exacerbations and asthma attacks.
Risks and challenges
Our initial lab testing results have been excellent and we are working on CE marking and FDA approval of the Smart Peak Flow device. But for the time being the Smart Peak Flow is not a medical device. The Smart Peak Flow is a consumer health electronic gadget that is not used for curing, treating, or preventing asthma or any other illness or condition.
All devices shown on this page and in the videos are pre-production prototypes. The actual device will look slightly different (and better, we hope).
We already have working apps in the Apple App Store and Google Play, but are currently improving, updating and redesigning them.
We are working with manufacturing partners in Europe that have decades of experience in electromechanical devices. However things can always crop up that can delay a new product.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
