I’m determined to complete the last three paintings of my Gameboardom series of twelve large-scale paintings -- 'playable' board game parodies that are narratives on our society & culture -- and memorialize the entire series in a meticulously-crafted 64-page fine art book.
Nine of the twelve ‘Gameboardom’ series paintings are already complete. Three are in progress. All paintings are water-color, stain and ink on canvas and distressed to take on the appearance of aged carnival posters discovered decades after use. Each fictional game board has been created with a cultural or societal subject in mind -- war, aging, our planet, celebrity, hip-hop -- and feature my writing and poetry that differentiates them from regular board games (in 'Biosphereytale', for example, the writing is to the cadence of a child's fairytale, 'Hip-Hopera' writing to a grooving rap/rhyme etc).
This is a unique project as board games are the platform for my art and messaging. My love of vintage board games -- their rich colors, detailed illustrations and out-of-the-ordinary titles & graphics -- made me want to take the game board medium a step further. The finishing touch was to simply add entertaining and thought-provoking writing that drives each game board concept.
The project also makes use of my 20+ years in the creative development, design and print arenas that will be invaluable to the book design and publishing side of this project.
What Is Gameboardom?
Having recently entered my sixth decade on this planet, I’ve learned that most of us are empathetic to the core --- perpetually wishing we could help everyone and fix everything. I’m one of ‘most of us’ as well.
‘Gameboardom’ is a series of twelve, one-of-a-kind board game parody paintings that I've put my heart into and created as a by-product of that need to fix things and the contrary helplessness that can consume 'most of us' when realities of events out of our control -- war, financial crisis, global economic collapse, aging and world suffering -- are at hand.
The ‘Gameboardom’ title is based on ‘kingdom’ as we are all on the playing surface of life. At the start, we’re all given a chance. Some playing the game roll the dice and take risks at every turn. Some do not. Some have a strategy. Some do not. Move by move, some reach their goal, some ‘win’, some do not . . . but we’re all players taking part in the colorful game of life.

About The 'Gameboardom' Paintings, Prints, Cells & Giclees
THE PAINTINGS - The twelve painted narrative original board games in Gameboardom are a blend of silk screen, ink, giclee, acrylic, water color, stains and pigments. The addition of paint serves as color to a monotoned text-driven image of the board game in black and white that usually takes several weeks to conceptualize, write and design. It's the combination of the written word, board game image, final painting and distressing by hand that allows me to deliver lasting artpieces that I only hope resonate and offer a window into our culture.
You can see larger versions of the nine completed originals here: MasterPeace with 'Deciduous' poem, Burlesquestions , Hiphopera , Meal-Of-Fortune , Religio , Staristocracy , Malibeauty , Biosphereytale , Consumedussa
THE PAINTINGS 'IN PROGRESS': Three original Gameboardom paintings are in progress -- 'Nyeterland' (shown below), 'Clownership' (shown below) and 'Transparentsy' (not shown). Your involvement will enable me to finish these three paintings and prepare all for the Gameboardom fine art book. I will post progress on each of the three pieces in progress during the upcoming weeks. Larger versions can be viewed here: Nyeterland , Clownership
THE GICLEES: The giclée rewards are fine art in quality, produced with a premier fine art edition print firm here in the United States. Paper stock, depending on the painting and colors, will be either an Epson Somerset Velvet 255 gsm (100% cotton for rich details, acid-free, fine art archival quality) or Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 308 gsm (Smooth surface, light white, age resistant paper, 100% cotton rag content, extremely age resistant). Per reward, your choice of color or black & white giclées with some samples shown below:
I will personally hand-number, title and sign each giclée and am honored to do so. The embossing on giclées is my personal art mark and is as stated per reward. All giclées will be in proportion to their original -- 'Masterpeace' and 'Burlesquestions' giclées will be approximately 12" x 16" and 'Meal of Fortune' and 'Transparentsy' giclées will be approximately 12" x 14". Numbered giclées of the Gameboardom originals are only being created for and limited to backers of my Gameboardom art book Kickstarter campaign.
In addition to 'Nyeterland' and 'Clownership' shown above, black & white images of the finished nine originals are shown below:
THE MAGNIFYCENT CELLS: During my years of working with silk screen, I used film positives to 'burn' the screens used to make my art. During shows, I'd offer these see-through black and white film 'cells' to collectors and then began framing a limited series of them. I had not produced cells for the Gameboardom series, but found prototype cells I created for this Kickstarter campaign particularly entertaining when partnered with a magnifying glass to create a unique, interactive conversation piece (cells are easily readable without magnifier) . . . they are simply magnifycent. Numbered Black & White cells of the Gameboardom originals (b/w images shown above + 3 in progress) are only being created for and limited to backers of this Gameboardom art book Kickstarter campaign.
THE ART LITHOPRINTS: The art lithoprints are printed at traditional line screens on 100lb glossy stock and are produced in full-color. Made at an 11" x 17" size for great readability, these art lithos are at times used as accessible art pieces in order for show visitors to take home a signed series artifact from the artist at a great price. I believe art is for everyone and, as such, believe no one should leave empty-handed if they take the time to visit an artist's show --- which is usually the culmination of months, sometimes years of work and thought. These art lithoprints serve a great purpose for both of us and I'm more than happy to sign and title each one for you. Art lithoprints of the Gameboardom originals are only being created for and limited to backers of this Gameboardom art book Kickstarter campaign.
About The 'Gameboardom' Fine Art Book
For me, this book is more than a book, more than memorializing the twelve Gameboardom paintings. I want the Gameboardom fine art book to be an ongoing creative 'handshake' between us. Our very own low-tech, social conduit. I promise you I will deliver a beautiful 64-page fine art book of the Gameboardom series printed on 100lb gloss stock and finished with a gorgeous dust jacket or slipcase, as you prefer per your reward. I am printing the books off-shore to lower costs and am starting with order quantities at suggested minimums but, with your involvement, hope to get to more cost-effective order quanitities. If we can accomplish this goal, I'll add some great print rewards of other concepts that didn't make the final twelve in the Gameboardom series. I'm grateful for any social assist you can offer to spread the word about the Gameboardom fine art book Kickstarter campaign.
The photos below are of an initial prototype book created. The actual Gameboardom fine art book for this Kickstarter will differ, as there will be two spreads per painting. One spread with the painting's description/story and a full-page of the original work. The second spread will consist of two magnified photographs of the painting similar to the one shown here. Some prose and poetry will follow several of the painting spreads for which the writing was central to the game board's concept. I will post designs of the book as I progress.
Standard & slip-case editions are limited to this Kickstarter only and are not available anywhere else.
About The Artist
My father painted to relax. My mother wrote and taught English for a living. As an obedient offspring, I'm the sum of the two, as is my work -- a combination of painting and writing that culminates in vibrant, text-driven narratives.
Having spent impressionable years of my youth in the late 1960s San Francisco Bay Area, defined by flower children, political movements and mind-blowing graphics, I’ve found that a graphical literary solution is the most satisfying way for me to interpret subjects that confound and interest me. Theatre posters, gameboards, comics, carnival posters and product packaging serve as both resource and vehicle for my narratives and allow me to combine soft, vintage romanticism with contemporary realism.
As an eternal optimist, I believe that colorful, playful images that evoke reflection and emotion are captured in one’s mind’s eye throughout life and can be paramount in maintaining a child-like, positive lens on the world -- however beautiful, yet bruised our world may be at any given moment. Like many people on the planet, I believe that many ‘optimistic lenses’ are able to spread hope and affect positive change in our world. Board games, for me, are simply a colorful brick in the foundation for this push to positive change.

To The Art Market:
I believe art is for everyone. I'm a bigger believer that everyone who spends time from their valuable life at an artist's gallery show should leave with something they value. During my career, I've only created one-of-a-kind originals and have never created 'giclées' or 'multiples' of my work which I'm doing here for the first time simply to memorialize the Gameboardom series in an elegant way and make my work more accessible to Kickstarter friends who may enjoy it -- I'm grateful to be a part of Kickstarter's 'kataklysmic' frontier.
Beyond, a writer/artist's life can be one of much solitude, with a constant basis on the peaks and valleys of acceptance. In this, my 50th year in this game of life, simply having the opportunity to connect with you here has helped me put one foot across the finish line . . . thank you for rolling the dice.
About The Rewards
A sampling of the Rewards offered for the Gameboardom fine art book are:
Risks and challenges
The three paintings 'in-progress' that need to be completed are completely under my control. I will be engaged during this Kickstarter to complete them and will provide a 'window' on progress for you by posting regularly to keep you updated.
The next step is completing fine art cruise scans of each painting for the art book, which will also be executed locally here in Los Angeles and 100% under my control.
After producing the pages of the Gameboardom art book 'in-studio' from the high-resolution scans, the last piece of the Gameboardom art book puzzle is the printing and ultimate delivery. After submitting all hi-res files, timeline estimations from my printer for proofing (1 wk), printing (1 wk), binding (1 wk), packing (1 wk), transit (3 wks) and customs (1 wk) are at 8-10 weeks. I am allowing 12-14 weeks after campaign closure with my July 2013 Kickstarter estimate for delivery so as not to disappoint anyone. My estimate for a July 2013 delivery date to you should be met without much problem and, should I have the Gameboardom fine art books in my hands earlier than anticipated, you can rest assured that I will do everything in my power to get them + other rewards to you shortly thereafter.
I am also planning to send any rewards that do not include the Gameboardom fine art book (post-cards, art lithoprints) a bit earlier --- I've listed July 2013 on all rewards as part of every reward is a 'Thank You' in the book itself.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
