About this project
Yup, pickles. Chances are pretty good that you like them, and so do we.
If we met anytime in the past few years, it’s likely that the conversation quickly turned to putting things into jars. FOX POINT PICKLING COMPANY dreams of creating quality and flavorful brined vegetables for you and your friends and neighbors using fresh produce and responsibly sourced spices. Dreams are how all great things get started and now, it’s finally becoming a reality.
States across New England have their own state pickle producers but none yet call Rhody home. With over 1,200 farms, a top-rated culinary school and an enviable restaurant scene, Rhode Island has been getting plenty of attention as a foodie destination. This awesome state needs a pickle, and one Rhode Islanders can be proud of! But anytime you go to the store with a craving, you have a choice between a jar of soggy, yellow, mass-produced pickle and a better quality product from Boston or New York. There needs to be a local Rhode Island option and that’s where FOX POINT PICKLING COMPANY comes in.
Tell me more...
Starting in September 2014, we’ll roll out with two flavors of cucumber pickles: Garlic Dills and Spicy Dills. After several years of perfecting the recipes, we've come up with an awesome mix of spices and apple cider vinegar that’s sure to please any pickle fan. The Garlic Dill pickles are crisp right out of the jar, a clean and zesty flavor with a bit of a kick at the end. The Spicy Dills bring the heat but still mimic that crisp consistency. The pickles will be sold in 24 oz. jars at local farmers markets, farm stands, gift shops, small grocery stores, online and anywhere else in the Rhode Island area that decides to give a pickle a chance. In the next year we plan to add some new products and flavors, like our Dill Carrots, as well as some very special collaborations and other treats we can’t quite share yet.
My recipes are solid and my process has even been approved by the Cornell Department of Food Science. I've obtained a business license and become a certified food safety manager. Even more, I've been accepted to Hope & Main, Rhode Island’s first food business incubator, a group that helps local food entrepreneurs by providing low-cost, low-risk access to shared-use commercial kitchens, technical resources, and mentoring. I've been working with a very talented graphic designer to create a logo, label, and other branding. And, with over a decade in the consumer public relations field helping companies to create buzz and build brands, I can’t tell you how excited I am to have the opportunity to use my background and know-how to build Rhode Island’s FOX POINT PICKLING COMPANY.
So why do you need our help?
I’ve already gotten so much accomplished, but start-up costs are high. I need to purchase several more licenses and insurance. I’ll need a huge amount of jars, top-notch produce, vinegar and spices. Then there are labels that need to be printed along with market and kitchen rental fees. Fox Point Pickles are all handmade and hand-packed. I love the work that goes into making these pickles, I just need some help with the other resources.

Wow! The response to our little pickle baby has been amazing! We are almost fully funded in less than a week! So that means I am posting our first stretch goal a little sooner than planned, but here it is:
If we reach $16,000, we can bring DILL CARROTS to market!
Winner of the "Best Brine" award at the 2012 Hope Artiste Village Wintertime Farmers Market, our carrots are tangy and a bit sweet and are perfect for a Bloody Mary, a charcuterie plate, or just regular old snacking.
The additional funds will be used for extra equipment, recipe approval, produce and jars, extra kitchen fees, labels and more.
Plus, we can hire someone to create an even more amazing FOX POINT PICKLING COMPANY website and online store (you know, instead of me using Squarespace)!
AND, everyone that has donated $75 or above will have a 16 oz. jar of Dill Carrots added to their rewards package!
Risks and challenges
Every new business has its challenges & risks. The first will be to scale up production in the certified kitchen space at Hope & Main, and I hope the second big challenge is to keep up with the demand. For any challenges that do arise though, I have surrounded myself with a great group of individuals, entrepreneurs and mentors who can share their knowledge and experience to assist me.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
