About this project
Not your granny's panties
Say hello to everyday, breathable 100% cotton underwear that's also... Sexy.
Despite recent surges forward in maternal health and other women’s issues, the well-being of women isn’t at the top of the list when it comes to designing “sexy” underwear or feminine products. We founded Oddo to help support a new standard for women’s health. Our aim is to take a secretive and sometimes awkward conversation about our bodies and sex and re-frame it to reflect a proud, natural and connected acceptance of sexuality and health.
And it all starts with a pair of underwear. Oddo panties are made from a healthy fabric—cotton—and designed by an accomplished production team in a silhouette that accentuates the female form.

Doctors and sexual health experts agree that 100% cotton underwear is the best choice for all women. Why? Because the vagina is a self-cleaning, anatomical powerhouse that has to function properly in order to stay healthy. To do that, it needs to breathe. Thank you, cotton!
The super sheer, finely spun cotton that's used in every pair of Oddo underwear is imported from Japan (! yes, Japan!). Delicate, elastic trim holds everything in place with zero pinching. Every piece we make is manufactured at a fair-wage factory located in Manhattan's historic Garment District.
(Oh, and the fit model we used to design Oddo panties? She's a real, flawed woman, with an imperfect but beautiful body!)
Here's Oddo's friend, Kate, wearing the Basic Brief in black. Sexy, right?
Our first style, the Basic Brief, is available in 4 colors. Black, white, beige and sable. We worked with artist Erin Lynn Welsh to develop the two different nude color pigments.
At Oddo, we're not just selling underwear. We're starting a conversation about women's health and sexuality.
Women’s bodies and sexuality have been politicized and fetishized since the dawn of time. All this attention on our sexuality, heath and reproductivity can make important topics a bit, um, awkward to discuss. Often this leads to... No discussion, no education, and a lot of misinformation. When we told our friends about Oddo, many of them said, "Finally! I've been looking for a line of cool, 100% cotton underwear." But many women had no idea that wearing 100% cotton is critical for vaginal health.
Indeed, that's the case: According to the American Society for Clinical Nutrition, an estimated 300 million women around the world suffer from vaginal and bladder infections each year. Often this is because they don't know how to care for their reproductive organs.
At Oddo, we want to educate and inform women about how to take care of and enjoy their bodies. We believe sex is a normal—and beautiful!—part of the human experience. And the language we use to talk about it doesn't have to be kinky, over-sexualized or ethereal. It can be elevated, smart, and inspiring.
The Oddo Body Manuals
Each Oddo purchase will arrive with an illustrated manual filled with interesting tips, information and inspiration about sex and sexual health. Every few months we'll tackle a different topic. The first topic? Female pleasure. (Oh, and this is important: These manuals aren't just for the user—we wrote them with a partner in mind, if you get what we're saying...)
There's a bonus on the flipside of our Body Manual. We teamed up with a collection of visual artists to showcase their interpretation of female anatomy. Esteemed artists like Jillian Mayer (click here to check out other work she's created) and others created exclusive depictions of two of our favorite anatomical superstars: The Vulva and The Clitoris. To get one, just back this project—and you can even select which piece you want to get as part of your Kickstarter Reward.
Here's the collection:
AN ODDO F.A.Q.
Q: This is awesome. How can I get my vulva (or the vulva of someone I love) into these panties?
A: Click "Back This Project" or select a Reward level with your choice of panty to the right. All you have to do is give $35. We'll be fully funded when we hit $50K.
Q: $35 for a pair of underwear? That's a lot of dough. How will Oddo spend the money?
A: We worked for months to design and source underwear with a dynamite silhouette that is also ethically crafted. Here's where the money will go: a little over 84% will go towards fabric, production materials, printing of the Body Manual, packaging, and shipping. The rest is dedicated to administrative costs, including a 5% Kickstarter commission, 4% processing fees, and overhead expenses.
Q: What if you surpass $50,000?
A: At $90K, we can introduce our second style, the Bikini Brief.
If we reach $120K, the Basic Thong
Q: OK, I really might get involved—but how can I be sure that you'll actually be able to deliver on this Kickstarter promise if you reach the goal?
A: Well, long story short, this isn't our first time at the rodeo. As a founder, Shira Wheeler has helped build and grow multiple design and fashion businesses. She has extensive experience delivering intricate, successful, high-quality and high-stakes projects on time and on budget. We're profesh. You can read more about Oddo's, timing, garment production line and our key team members below.
Once the Kickstarter campaign wraps up, it'll take about 4 months to produce and deliver the goods. Here's a schedule we'll be working towards.
Q. Who's the target Oddo woman?
A. She could be any combination of the following: An underwear obsessive—who owns drawers full of lingerie but ends up slipping into the comfortable cotton panties and best fitting bra every day—because a leopard print thong from the mall just doesn't do the trick anymore. A 100%-cotton convert who's starting to pay attention to how she takes care of herself and her body. A woman who likes to know where the products that she wears / eats / purchases come from, and how they were made.
We corralled a team of ridiculously talented people to help with the Oddo launch. Here are the MVP's:
Shira Wheeler, Founder
Oddo's founder is veteran of the design and brand strategy world with stints at her own firm (Figure), RoAndCo, and Radical.Media. Over the last ten years, Shira has helped launch and develop marketing and strategy for iconic and independently minded clients, from Nike, Refinery29 and Altuzarra to Paintbox and M. Patmos. She first became obsessed with chic cotton underwear while living in Paris after college. You know how those Parisians are. So chic that they sell sexy, affordable panties in the grocery store (Oh, Monoprix! Oddo t'adore!). When she landed back in the States, Shira was bummed to realize that "sexy" American underwear = not sexy at all. Mass-produced leopard print lace thongs? Mysteriously fabricated fabric "boy shorts" that often give the wearer yeast infections. There had to be a better way...
And so, a plan was hatched. Along the way, Shira realized that she wanted to talk about more than just underwear. Because when you talk about underwear with women, the conversation inevitably turns to sex. What kind of underwear makes women feel (and look) sexy and confident? How can we go beyond lame thongs and anti-sexual boy shorts but still take care of our bodies?
And so. Here we are.
Undisclosed name, Technical Designer
Oddo's amazing technical designer is working anonymously on this project, but have no fear—she's run her own production house, worked for a major lingerie brand, and has a double black-belt in Karate.
Shula Melamed, M.A., MPH. Oddo's Relationship Coach
Shula is a beloved counselor obsessed with human behavior, couples, and anthropology with over 10 years of experience helping people improve or develop intimacy with themselves and their partners. Shula holds a M.A. in Psychology from the New School University and an M.P.H. in Sexuality and Health from Columbia University.
Oddo's advisory board is comprised of women's health experts (a well-woman nurse and a gynecologist), a lawyer, stylist/art director, graphic designer, entrepreneurs, an editor, and a whipsmart small-business consultant, among others. We got this.
1. We believe that it's important to—in the words of Salt-N-Pepa—"talk about all the good things, and the bad things, that may be. Let's talk about sex."
2. We believe that education and conversation is an important part of enjoying our bodies and life itself.
3. We believe that sex is a normal and beautiful part of the human experience, and that the language we use to talk about it doesn't have to be kinky or awkward—it can be elevated, smart, and inspiring.
4. We're grateful to the generations of courageous women (and men!) who have worked towards lasting equality of genders.
5. We believe that sexuality and physical relationships are an important part of the human existence.
6. We believe that human-focused businesses can improve both individual lives and society as a whole.
7. We think taking care of the planet through ethical sourcing and manufacturing is important.
8. We believe that it's possible to see the great, the unfathomable, and the infinite in everything—nature, science, art, dreams, and, yes, sex.
Annnnd.... We're incorporated as a Public Benefit Corporation
What does that mean? We're glad you asked. Public Benefit Corporations are a recently developed class of businesses that allow for-profit companies to consider the impact of their decisions on society, not just shareholders. Other amazing PBC's include Patagonia, Etsy, and Kickstarter.
THE NITTY GRITTY
Okay, so you want to know even more about the Panties
The Fabric: 100% Japanese cotton (as if you didn't know already). The weight is 85g/m2 (aka super-sheer).
The Specs: See size chart below
Care: Hand wash, cold and lay flat to dry. (Of course, you can machine wash the Oddo panties. But they'll last longer if you treat them with care.)
At Oddo, the bottom line is important, but so is our mission. We chose a Kickstarter launch because we love how the platform allows real people to support projects they believe in. We might seek investors in the future, as the product assortment and production methods evolve. But regardless of how we grow, we'll only choose partners who understand and support Oddo's social mission, standards of excellence in our products, and fair practices for staff, vendors, and customers.
What is etsy.org?
Though Oddo is the brainchild of founder Shira Wheeler, it was birthed into this world with help from the small-business wizards at Etsy.org—a fellowship for socially minded entrepreneurs. (We could write a thousand pages about this incredible program, but we gotta focus here on the underwear! If you want to learn more about Etsy.org and the folks who run it, click here.)
To Vincent Perini, who directed and edited our KS video; Jessica Zamora-Turner for art directing Oddo's first photoshoot and so much more; photographer Georgia Hilmer; editor + fake big sister Meghan Sutherland; women's health guru Jo Zasloff for checking our facts and showing us Our Bodies, Ourselves; Lotta Nieminen; Tze Chun; Rebecca Jacobs, Jillian Mayer, Lara Apponyi, Nayara Branco and Sam Wheeler.

Risks and challenges
The main "risk" is timing. Creating and shipping garments is an intricate process involving many partners and steps. We feel confident about our schedule, but of course if a delay occurs, we'll notify all backers immediately.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
