About this project
- Opening to On the Edge of Some Place Else
In the summer of 1974, the rural town of Ashmoore, OK has its bucolic world rattled from within by an act of unprecedented violence. In the aftermath of the attack on 17 year old Jenny Wade, the town rallies together but with no immediate arrest, the small-town gossip mills quickly begin to grind the story into pulp, churning with speculation, distrust and doubt, ultimately aimed at Jenny Wade herself.
At the same time, Brian Thompson, the 14 year old brother of Jenny’s best friend, enters into a relationship with Mr. Barnes, his former sixth-grade teacher; a relationship that soon crosses all moral and legal lines and alienates Brian from his friends and family, bringing down on him every childhood fear of being tormented by his peers and branded an outcast.
In the shadows of the gossip and rumor, an unlikely friendship develops between Jenny and Brian—a friendship marked for destruction by a town set on reclaiming its, once safe but now fragile, existence.
I have turned to the Kickstarter community in hopes of funding the production of my first novel, On the Edge of Some Place Else. After pursuing production through traditional routes via a literary agent without success (the book received great feedback and interest but the subject matter proved too dark and too risky) I've decided to take destiny by the proverbial balls and independently publish the novel.
But if I’m going to this, I want to do it right. I want to create the best product that I can; not just publish to publish. I want to produce a book that is worthy of being placed, not only on the shelves of Barnes & Noble but on the most important shelf: the reader’s.
Now, I know I'm a good writer but I also know I’m a horrible editor (most writers are when it comes to our own work, we’re just too close to it). So I know that I need to engage the services of a top-rate, professional developmental editor (I’m not so vain that I think every word I write is perfection). I need someone unbiased who will be merciless in pointing out the parts of the book that need work. Allen Ginsburg said that writers need to “kill their darlings” (those fabulous, terribly literary sentences and paragraphs and pages of writing that may be lovely and terrific but don’t actually move the story along) and I need someone who will put my darlings on the chopping block and order me to kill them.
Additionally, I would need to engage the service of a professional book designer (which I never knew existed until I started researching independent publishing). A book designer doesn't just work up a fantastic cover, by which you can judge the book, but they will also design the print layout inside, formatting for e-book and print so the book "looks" like a professional book.
So, in order to produce a top-rate novel (inside and out), I need a bit of help from you. Not a lot, just a donation and a share (definitely a share, if nothing else).
I thank you for taking the time to check out my project and if you have any questions please feel free to reach out.

Risks and challenges
I think I've given myself the proper amount of time to get my novel into the hands of an editor (I've already got him lined up and raring to go). While the editing is in process I will get the book designer geared up and working on the cover. All that will be left would be to produce the e-book and the physical book. The only possible roadblock I could foresee may be the production of the physical book, though I think the cushion I have built into the process will stave off this possibility. Of course, should there be a delay, I will ensure to reach out to each donor with updates and new projected delivery times.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
