A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
WHO AM I? WHAT IS THIS CAMPAIGN?
My name is Kyle Miller and I am the owner/operator of TGT studios, a small studio in a small town located on the far west coast of Vancouver Island. My background is in traditional furniture making & joinery, and stringed instrument design. This campaign is my sole Nixie Clock production of the 2017 year, with pricing 40% off of my usual MSRP.
The TGT Studios Nixie Clock Series is my signature line of handmade tube clocks built with a Steampunk aesthetic. Over 125 units have been produced and sent all over the world, clients include: Grammy-winners, tech CEO's, and the epic Joe Rogan Experience Podcast.
This campaign represents the debut of the 4th production run in the series and the introduction of the first clocks built using maple hardwood. The campaign also features a re-issuing of the most popular previous clock designs (original campaigns here, here, and here), including special editions. If there is a clock, or combination of clocks, you would like then please contact me directly and I will setup a tier for you.
Funding for the campaign is based on an approximate production of 10 units.
WHAT IS A NIXIE CLOCK?
A nixie clock is a modern application of a vintage technology. Using modern circuitry and components, and pairing them with the display capabilities of Soviet-era nixie tubes, these clocks present the time with series of glowing cathodes.
WHAT IS A NIXIE TUBE?
Nixie tubes are cold-cathode vacuum tubes, developed in 1955 and used in the Soviet Union until the 1980's. You can hear me discuss Nixie Tubes and my clock series in this interview on CBC Radio. The tubes function by passing a small electrical current through a cathode, resulting in an orange glow discharge that illuminates each digit in sequence, as seen below in the demo:
The clock can be easily programmed for time (Hours/Minutes/Seconds) as well as the date (MM/DD/YY).
Display options include both 12-hour and 24-hour time.
Night mode: clock can be dimmed during night hours hours.
Programmable alarm and snooze function.
The clock has 3 separate RGB LED's installed, which are fully configurable. Each clock has over 700 colour variants.
Tubes are socketed not soldered, so they are easily replaced.
Features an optional GPS Module input for auto-time sync.
The clock is controlled by 4 buttons, located on the rear of the unit. Knobs on the front are ornamental (but do turn).
Circuit boards are custom made in London, UK with specialized plexiglass casing, etched with TGT Studios brand insignia.
WHAT MODELS ARE AVAILABLE?
