A post-911 picture of the American mind, Mark Saile finds deadly secrets as a giant fortune teller stalks him in this dystopian comedy
(Please see the bottom of the page for the novel summary and contents)
I have two primary goals for getting Cthul'hu Comes Knocking into the market and read by wider audiences.
1. Hire an editor: an expert fiction editor with a solid background in American and Asian Politics/Studies.
2. Develop an eBook version of the novel (iPad, Kindle, B&N e-Reader) and distribute it on the appropriate publishing venues.
Once the book is available to readers online, I will solicit up to 20 independent book reviews from readers and professionals on GoodReads, IndieReview, and TweepSearch’s 10 most read reviewers. Reaching this stage of the project will help expand its market platform and possibly land a publishing deal for hardcopy prints through publishers like Random House, Penguin, or Graywolf Press.
Finally, the really exciting possibilities of having an expertly edited eBook is that it increases the chances of successfully soliciting film agencies to turn Cthul'hu Comes Knocking into a movie or animated film (hopefully directed by Tim Burton or made by Lucas Studios or Legendary and DC Comics).
The total project goal of $5,000 is based on the estimated costs for hiring one editor, getting the novel made into an eBook and distributed on multiple platforms, and soliciting reviews (approximately $4,000).
As part of the Rewards (see below), some backers will receive a T-shirt with the book cover on front and a quotation on the back as well as a signed, limited-edition eBook with photography from travels in Asia (approximately $1,000). Note: Backer Level 3 also includes the opportunity to work with the author for a one month period of time on a project: your own writing or photo-video project, or a collaborative venture with the author on a writing or photo-video project (subject to travel restrictions and a maximum of four (4) 10 hour weeks in exchange).
Additional costs include branding and registration, shipping, and percentages levied by Kickstarter (3-5%), Amazon Payments (3%), and state and federal taxes.
Reward Delivery Dates
eBooks, T-shirts, limited edition eBook with photography portfolio will be delivered in December, 2013, and backer-author projects will also begin in December.

Cthul'hu Comes Knocking combines magic realism and dystopian comedy in a work of fiction based on eight unbroken years of living in Asia. The hero, Mark, elucidates an American psyche at odds with itself and a post-911 world where the struggle to gain self-determination is under attack by privatized groups propping up elite and destructive institutions formerly revered by the people.
This 250 page, nine chapter novel has international scope and an unconventional mash-up of pop, Western, Chinese, Spanish and Indian culture book-ended by a controversial autobiography. Framed by 70 years of blow-back from first Military, and now Corporate Imperialism in Asia, the story traces America’s increasing indebtedness to China and its impact on dominant socio-cultural behaviors nationally and overseas.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The biggest potential difficulty in delivering rewards for Cthul'hu Comes Knocking will be finding and hiring a qualified editor. Although telecommuting is possible and expected to some extent, I'd prefer to have some time to work face-to-face with the editor and so hope to find people locally from the Bay Area in San Francisco. Developing the eBook will be fairly straight-forward and uncomplicated, and the T-shirt companies I have contacted have very short turn-around times on orders. Tier 3 Reward Levels are great for groups, for instance musicians that pool their money to have 1:30 "splash" videos done (limit 30 musicians, artists, comedians, etc per pledge).
